Roosters vs Rabbitohs Preview & Betting Tips: NRL Round 1 2026

March 12th 2026, 10:36pm, By: Ben Bridge

Roosters vs Rabbitohs Betting Tips

Friday Night NRL in Round 2 delivers one of the biggest rivalries in rugby league, as the Sydney Roosters host the South Sydney Rabbitohs in a clash that always carries enormous intensity regardless of ladder position. From a betting perspective, early-season matchups like this can present real opportunities for punters, as markets often react heavily to Round 1 results before teams have properly settled into the new season.

That appears to be the case here. The Roosters were heavily beaten 42–18 by the Warriors last week, while the Rabbitohs opened their season with an entertaining 40–30 win over the Dolphins. Those results have naturally influenced early market movement, but rivalry games often play out very differently to what the form guide suggests. Below, we break down the clash and bring you our best bets!

Roosters vs Rabbitohs Prediction & Tips: 2026 NRL Round 2

Roosters Look to Bounce Back After Horror Round 1 Loss

The Sydney Roosters enter Round 2 looking to immediately steady their season after a disappointing 42–18 defeat to the Warriors in Round 1. It was a performance that exposed several defensive issues, particularly through the middle of the field where the Warriors consistently generated momentum and quick ruck speed. An 11-4 penalty count against the Roosters didn’t help, and discipline has to be high on the agenda this week for coach Trent Robinson.

While the Roosters showed glimpses of attacking quality, particularly through James Tedesco’s involvement around the ruck and Sam Walker’s kicking game, they struggled to control field position for long stretches of the match. The Warriors repeatedly forced the Roosters onto the back foot through strong yardage sets, allowing them to dictate the tempo and create attacking opportunities late in each half.

Handling errors and ill-discipline also proved costly. Several incomplete sets handed possession straight back to the Warriors, who capitalised by building pressure and eventually stretching the scoreboard beyond reach. Once the Roosters began chasing the game, their defensive line speed dropped, and the Warriors were able to exploit gaps around the edges.

Despite the ugly scoreline, Round 1 results can sometimes exaggerate underlying issues. The Roosters still possess one of the most experienced rosters in the competition and will know they cannot afford another poor performance against their fiercest rival. Expect a far more urgent and physical response this week as they look to bounce back immediately.

Bunnies Back Under Bennett?

South Sydney opened their 2026 campaign with a thrilling 40–30 victory over the Dolphins, a result that highlighted the attacking potential within Wayne Bennett’s new-look Rabbitohs side. The match was played in difficult wet conditions at Suncorp Stadium, yet South Sydney managed to maintain strong attacking shape and capitalise on key opportunities throughout the contest.

The Rabbitohs’ spine was particularly influential. Cody Walker’s creativity and game management continually troubled the Dolphins’ defensive line, while Latrell Mitchell injected himself into attacking plays from his new centre role, to create multiple scoring chances. When South Sydney found momentum, their attacking edges looked dangerous, particularly through quick shifts out of the ruck.

Through the middle, Keon Koloamatangi, Cam Murray and Tevita Tatola again laid a solid platform, helping the Rabbitohs win key yardage exchanges and maintain territorial control when the match tightened late.

Defensively, however, there are still questions to answer after conceding 30 points. While the attacking output will please Bennett, the Rabbitohs will know their defensive structure must improve against stronger opposition.

That said, the early signs are encouraging. If South Sydney can tighten defensively while maintaining their attacking rhythm, there is genuine potential for the Rabbitohs to push back into top-eight contention this season.

Roosters vs Rabbitohs Recent History

Few rivalries in the NRL carry the same level of history and hostility as the Roosters and Rabbitohs. Regardless of ladder position, clashes between these two clubs are rarely straightforward, with both teams traditionally lifting their intensity for one of rugby league’s fiercest matchups.

The last five meetings between the sides have been dominated in general by the Roosters:

2025 Round 27: Roosters def Rabbitohs 36-6
2025 Round 5: Rabbitohs def Roosters 20–14
2024 Round 27: Roosters def Rabbitohs 36–28
2024 Round 3: Roosters def Rabbitohs 48-6
2023 Round 27: Roosters def Rabbitohs 26-12

Roosters to Bounce Back Against Old Foe

From a betting perspective, this shapes as a classic early-season market overreaction.

The Roosters’ heavy Round 1 loss to the Warriors has pushed their price out significantly, while South Sydney’s attacking display against the Dolphins has created early confidence around the Rabbitohs. However, when assessing this matchup purely on roster strength and typical ratings, the Roosters would normally sit well over a converted try favourite in this spot.

One key boost for Sydney is the return of centre Robert Toia, whose presence strengthens their right-edge defence and sets up a fascinating matchup against Latrell Mitchell on South Sydney’s left side. Toia’s physicality and defensive awareness should help stabilise an edge that struggled in Round 1, while also adding another powerful yardage carrier to the Roosters’ backline.

South Sydney’s attack looked sharp last week but conceding 30 points to the Dolphins still highlights defensive concerns. Against a Roosters side desperate to respond and playing in front of their home crowd, those defensive lapses could prove costly.

Expect the Roosters’ forward pack to bring far greater intensity after last week’s disappointment, allowing players like Tedesco and Walker to control field position more effectively.

When factoring in the rivalry, the Roosters’ bounce-back motivation and the return of Toia, this feels like a game where the market has slightly overcorrected based on Round 1 results. With the line sitting at Roosters -1.5, backing the home side to respond strongly and cover the small spread stands out as the best betting angle.

Roosters -1.5

Roosters vs Rabbitohs Player Prop Bet

Whilst I expect Toia to keep Latrell quieter than we generally see, over the course of 80 minutes Latrell will prove too big and strong at some point and get over the line.

Latrell Mitchell (1+ try)

$2.45 (1 Unit)

Roosters vs Rabbitohs Same Game Multi

Leg 1: Roosters ML – Little bit more security with the ML over the spread.

Leg 2: L Mitchell (1+ try) – See above best prop bet.

Leg 3: M Nawaqanitawase (1+ try) – Four tries in three games against the Rabbitohs, expect Marky Mark to open his try scoring for the 2026 season.
