Panthers vs Broncos Prediction & Tips: 2026 NRL Round 1
Panthers Looking to Reclaim the Premiership
Penrith enter 2026 in a slightly different position to what we’ve become used to — they’re no longer the team defending the trophy, they’re the team chasing it. Their 2025 season again showed why their system has been the benchmark for years: ruthless defensive habits, elite control through the middle, and a spine that rarely beats itself. But the key takeaway heading into this year is simple: Brisbane proved last season they can match Penrith’s physicality and pressure for long enough to flip the game.
The Panthers still look like the Panthers on paper. Nathan Cleary is there to steer the ship, Dylan Edwards remains the engine that wins the yardage battle early in sets, and Isaah Yeo is still the connective tissue that makes their attack and defence function at a high level. Where this opener gets interesting is the way Penrith respond to being out-muscled and out-finished in the biggest moment of their season. If they’re at their best, Penrith can drag you into a low-error arm wrestle where every repeat set matters. If they’re a touch off, Brisbane have the athletes to punish them quickly.
Broncos Begin Premiership Defence at Home
Brisbane are the reigning premiers for a reason - last season they combined their usual attacking ceiling with a level of resilience and game management that’s traditionally required to win in September. The big shift in 2025 wasn’t just that the Broncos could score points (we knew that); it was that they could win the tight ones, and they could do it against the teams built to strangle you.
Their Round 1 team list screams continuity and intent: Reynolds and Mam in the halves, Walsh at the back, Haas and Carrigan in the middle — and critically, Ben Hunt added as a weapon off the bench while Cory Paix starts at hooker. That combination gives Brisbane flexibility: play fast through the ruck if it’s there or settle into a territory game if Penrith turn it into a grind.
And doing it at Suncorp matters. Brisbane don’t need to “ease into” the season here - this is a home statement spot, on a big stage, against their biggest measuring-stick opponent.
Panthers vs Broncos Recent History
The last five meetings between these teams tell a clean story arc — from Penrith’s dynasty peak to Brisbane finally breaking through.
It starts with the 2023 Grand Final, where Penrith completed an all-time comeback to beat Brisbane 26–24. From there, the Panthers won the next three clashes between the sides:
- Round 3, 2024: Panthers 34–12 Broncos
- Round 18, 2024: Panthers 14–6 Broncos
- Round 9, 2025 (Magic Round): Panthers 32–8 Broncos
But Brisbane got the one that mattered most last season, beating Penrith 16–14 in the 2025 Preliminary Final at Suncorp Stadium — the win that launched their premiership run.
Broncos to Cover at Home in Round 1
This is the kind of Round 1 matchup where the market can get caught between “Penrith are Penrith” and what we saw when these teams last played for everything. Brisbane showed in the 2025 Preliminary Final they can win the middle third and handle Penrith’s pressure without melting into errors, and they get the benefit of doing it again at Suncorp under Friday night lights.
Penrith absolutely have the class and structure to win this, but from a betting perspective, the key is that Brisbane don’t need everything to go right to stay in it. Their forward pack can keep the game in the trenches, Reynolds can steer them through the tough periods, and Walsh/Mam give them the strike to turn one momentum swing into points.

Broncos v Panthers Player Prop Bet
Paul Alamoti spent a decent amount of time in reserve grade last season, but I can’t see it happening again in 2026. This kid is an absolute freak, scoring 8 tries in his final 8 games last season, including a double against the Broncos in the Prelim Final.

Broncos v Panthers Same Game Multi
Leg 1: Broncos (1-12) – Don’t think the Panthers will be blown off the park, and the Broncos should win.
Leg 2: P Alamoti (1+ try) – See above best prop bet.
Leg 3: G Shibasaki (1+ try) – The Panthers right edge was a problem last season defensively, and the Broncos’ left edge is lethal.
