Saturday evening in Townsville gives us an interesting betting scenario where the home favourite has already achieved its primary objective.
North Queensland’s 24-10 victory over Wests Tigers secured eighth position and locked the Cowboys into the finals. Canberra, meanwhile, were eliminated during Round 25 and had the bye last weekend. Neither side therefore enters with conventional must win motivation. That makes the team lists particularly important.
The Cowboys are without Jeremiah Nanai, Griffin Neame and Zac Laybutt. Nanai has a medial ligament issue, Neame is being rested after battling turf toe for much of the season and Laybutt is in concussion protocols. Robert Derby comes onto the wing, while Coen Hess and John Bateman move into the starting pack.
Canberra is not at full strength either. Ethan Sanders is being rested after playing all 23 games this season, with highly rated youngster Coby Black making his NRL debut at halfback. Zac Hosking and Corey Horsburgh are also out, but Morgan Smithies returns, and the Raiders retain Kaeo Weekes, Ethan Strange, Matt Timoko, Xavier Savage, Josh Papalii and Joseph Tapine.
At Raiders +6.5, I think the market has gone too far. My ratings have this much closer to a pick em’. Let's break it all down.

Cowboys vs Raiders Prediction & Tips: 2026 NRL Round 27
Cowboys Do Enough to Lock Away Finals
North Queensland’s 24-10 victory over the Tigers was far from spectacular, but it delivered exactly what Todd Payten needed: a guaranteed finals berth.
The Tigers threatened to produce another upset after their remarkable win over the Roosters, but North Queensland stayed patient and eventually pulled away late. Tom Chester scored the sealing try in the 77th minute as the Cowboys booked their third finals appearance in six seasons.
Tom Dearden’s return was a major positive. The Cowboys captain had missed four matches with an ankle injury and immediately restored some stability to a spine that had been shuffled repeatedly in his absence.
North Queensland were still not particularly convincing, which matters when assessing a spread above a converted try.
This team currently sits eighth with a poor points differential, and there is little realistic opportunity to dramatically change its finals seeding. The priority is arriving at next weekend healthy rather than trying to put 40 on Canberra. That attitude is already visible in selection.
Neame has been carrying turf toe since Round 2 and will finally receive a rest, while Nanai will be protected after tweaking his medial ligament. Laybutt’s concussion forces a further backline change.
There is still enormous experience in the side. Scott Drinkwater, Dearden and Jake Clifford control the spine, while Jason Taumalolo, Reuben Cotter, Reed Mahoney and Heilum Luki headline the pack. That should be enough to win.
It does not necessarily mean they win comfortably.
Raiders Fresh After Bye
Canberra have had a fortnight to think about their extraordinary 34-30 loss to Brisbane, which ended their already faint finals hopes.
The Raiders led 30-16 with 20 minutes remaining in Josh Papalii’s final home match before conceding three late tries and somehow losing. It was one of the most painful defeats of their season and a fitting example of why a side that competed well for long stretches ultimately missed September.
Papalii now plays the final game of his NRL career in Townsville. That should provide Canberra with some motivation despite their season being over.
The loss of Sanders creates uncertainty. He has played every match this season and developed a strong partnership with Ethan Strange, so asking Coby Black to debut at Queensland Country Bank Stadium is hardly ideal. Still, Canberra is not rolling out team full of reserve graders.
Weekes remains at fullback, Strange stays at five eighth and Timoko and Savage provide strike out wide. The starting front row of Papalii and Tapine is also significantly stronger than what you normally see from an eliminated side in Round 27.
Morgan Smithies returns from concussion, while Noah Martin is back from a quad injury. That is enough quality to remain competitive.
Canberra also had last weekend off while North Queensland were forced into a tense, physical game against the Tigers. In a dead rubber style matchup, freshness can matter more than usual.
Cowboys vs Raiders Recent History
These sides already met in Round 13, when Canberra produced one of its better defensive performances of the season to beat North Queensland 26-12 at GIO Stadium. The Raiders repeatedly pinned the Cowboys deep and controlled possession, with Ethan Sanders setting up Xavier Savage during a patient second half display.
North Queensland won the lone 2025 clash 30-20 in Townsville and absolutely dominated both meetings in 2024, winning 34-16 in Canberra and 42-4 at home.

Take the Points in a Strange Final-Round Spot
The Cowboys are deserved favourites. They are at home, they have the better halfback, and Canberra are handing Coby Black an NRL debut. But -6.5 is too much for me.
My ratings have this close to a pick’em once the personnel changes and motivational factors are incorporated. North Queensland’s incentive is primarily to get through the match healthy. Their eighth-place position is effectively set due to the large differential gap above them, which means there is very little reward for chasing a margin once they establish control. That creates exactly the sort of game script where a +6.5 underdog can stay alive.
Canberra should also be fresher after the bye, and Papalii’s final NRL appearance gives the dressing room something tangible to rally around.
The Sanders absence is the major concern. If Black struggles with the pace of first grade football, Dearden and Clifford can dominate territory and make this much harder than the ratings suggest.
But the Raiders still have enough experience around him to simplify the assignment. Strange can take more first receiver responsibility, Weekes can become heavily involved and Papalii, Tapine and Smithies can provide the platform.
There is also a potentially interesting Friday night wrinkle. If South Sydney beat the heavily rotated Roosters, it further confirms just how conservative finals bound teams are prepared to be this week. Sydney have rested a huge chunk of their first-choice lineup, and North Queensland have already made several protective selection decisions of their own. Also, if the Rabbitohs win as 22.5-point favourites, the Cowboys are locked into 8th place.
This is not a large bet. Final round dead rubbers involving debutant halves rarely should be. But six and a half is too many.

Purdue is back in the centres, where his mix of strength and speed works better than in the halves. Three tries in his past three games, he comes into the finals in terrific form, and attacks the weaker Raiders’ right edge defence.
