Week 5 of the NFL season gets underway with Thursday Night Football as the Dallas Cowboys welcome the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to AT&T Stadium. This looked an intriguing matchup when the schedule was released, but the Buccaneers have endured a disastrous start to the season and arrive in Dallas winless through four games. The Cowboys, meanwhile, have recovered to 2-2 after a thrilling victory over Houston and will be looking to move above .500 for the first time this season.

NFL Week 5 Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Dallas Cowboys Betting Tips
11:15am AEDT, Friday October 9
Dallas Cowboys
Dallas has been one of the NFL's most entertaining teams through the opening month, with its explosive offence helping overcome some significant defensive deficiencies. The Cowboys improved to 2-2 with a dramatic 34-30 comeback victory over Houston last weekend, scoring 28 second-half points to overturn a double-digit deficit. Dak Prescott has thrown for 1,065 yards and eight touchdowns through four games, while Dallas has scored at least 31 points in each of its past three outings.
CeeDee Lamb has been the standout performer, leading the NFL with 498 receiving yards and averaging an incredible 124.5 yards per game. Lamb is coming off a monster performance against Houston, catching 17 passes for 189 yards and the game-winning touchdown, his third consecutive 100-yard game. The Cowboys also have George Pickens, Jake Ferguson and Javonte Williams providing plenty of support, although their defence remains a concern after allowing 30 points to Houston and struggling to generate consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Few teams have endured a more disappointing opening month than Tampa Bay, which enters Week 5 at 0-4 and facing the prospect of falling out of playoff contention before the season has properly taken shape. The Buccaneers were already struggling before losing Baker Mayfield to a dislocated right thumb, leaving undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels to take over at quarterback. Daniels became the first undrafted rookie since the AFL-NFL merger to start a game in Week 4 or earlier, but his debut against Green Bay was a difficult one as Tampa Bay managed just 14 points in a 17-14 defeat.
Daniels completed 19 of 27 passes for 148 yards and a touchdown against the Packers, but also threw two interceptions as the Buccaneers struggled to generate anything meaningful through the air. Tampa Bay has at least remained competitive defensively, allowing fewer than 245 passing yards in each of its first four games, but injuries are beginning to take their toll. Star safety Antoine Winfield Jr. and cornerback Benjamin Morrison have both been ruled out, leaving the Buccaneers severely undermanned against one of the most productive passing attacks in football.
Prediction
The Cowboys are far from a complete football team, particularly defensively, but this looks an ideal opportunity to build some momentum. Dallas has averaged 34 points across its past three games, while Tampa Bay has struggled to move the football and now faces another game without Mayfield. Daniels showed some mobility against Green Bay, but asking an undrafted rookie to keep pace with Prescott and this Dallas offence in his first road start is a significant challenge.
Tampa Bay's defence has been respectable despite its winless start, but containing Lamb and the Cowboys' array of offensive weapons will be difficult without Winfield and Morrison. The Buccaneers have failed to cover the spread in all four games this season, and while Dallas has its own defensive problems, the difference in offensive production is difficult to ignore. The Cowboys should be able to establish an early advantage and pull away as the game progresses, making Dallas the preferred play to cover the eight-point handicap.

CeeDee Lamb Over 80.5 Receiving Yards
Lamb has been the hottest receiver in the NFL through the opening month, leading the league with 498 receiving yards and averaging a remarkable 124.5 yards per game. He is also averaging 9.3 receptions per contest, comfortably ahead of his previous career-best average of eight, and enters Thursday night having surpassed 100 receiving yards in three consecutive games. His latest performance was arguably his best yet, hauling in 17 receptions for 189 yards and a touchdown against Houston. Tampa Bay has defended the pass reasonably well this season, but the absences of Winfield and Morrison create a significant opportunity for Prescott to continue feeding his favourite target. With Lamb commanding enormous volume in one of the league's most productive passing attacks, another performance beyond 80.5 receiving yards looks well within reach.
