Philadelphia 76ers at Cleveland Cavaliers
Saturday, November 7 | 11:30am AEDT
Cleveland return home looking to arrest a disappointing run of form after suffering consecutive defeats to Oklahoma City, including a 124-116 loss on Wednesday. The Cavaliers have slipped to 4-4 through their opening eight games, with Donovan Mitchell averaging 22.5 points per contest and James Harden struggling to find his shooting rhythm. Cleveland's injury concerns are also mounting, with starting centre Jarrett Allen suffering a knee injury against the Thunder, while Peyton Watson and Jaylon Tyson have been managing respective hamstring and ankle problems. Those absences could leave the Cavaliers particularly vulnerable against one of the Eastern Conference's strongest offensive teams.
Philadelphia have been the standout team in the Eastern Conference through the opening fortnight, winning eight of their first nine games and arriving in Cleveland on a five-game winning streak. The 76ers continued their impressive form with a 112-106 victory over Detroit on Wednesday, with Jaylen Brown scoring 30 points and Joel Embiid contributing 26 points and 15 rebounds. Tyrese Maxey has been outstanding throughout the early stages of the campaign, averaging 28 points per game, while LeBron James has settled seamlessly into his new surroundings. James is averaging 15.7 points, 7.4 rebounds and 7.4 assists, and his return to Cleveland adds another intriguing storyline to this NBA Cup contest.
The Cavaliers will be desperate to turn their form around on their home floor, but Philadelphia look the more complete team heading into this matchup. Cleveland's injury problems are particularly concerning against a 76ers outfit that can attack through several different players, with Embiid capable of exploiting any weakness around the basket. Maxey's scoring and James' playmaking should also create plenty of problems for a Cavaliers defence that has conceded more than 117 points per game. With Philadelphia riding a five-game winning streak and Cleveland struggling for consistency, we're backing the 76ers to continue their impressive start to the season.

San Antonio Spurs at Sacramento Kings
Saturday, November 7 | 2:00pm AEDT
Sacramento have endured a difficult start to the new season, winning just one of their opening eight games and struggling badly at the defensive end of the floor. The Kings suffered a 116-103 defeat to the Lakers on Wednesday, extending their winless start at home to three games. Domantas Sabonis continues to provide a reliable presence around the basket, contributing 16 points and 17 rebounds against Los Angeles, while rookie Darius Acuff Jr. has been an encouraging addition to the backcourt. However, the Kings have struggled to contain opposing scorers, and injuries to Keegan Murray and Maxime Raynaud have further weakened their rotation.
San Antonio enter this contest in outstanding form, having won six consecutive games after dropping their opening two matches of the season. Victor Wembanyama produced one of the most remarkable individual performances in recent NBA history on Wednesday, finishing with 52 points, 24 rebounds and eight blocks in a thrilling 112-111 victory over Dallas. The French superstar is averaging 29 points and 12.4 rebounds through eight games, while De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper provide the Spurs with an exciting supporting cast. San Antonio also recorded a dominant 130-103 victory over Sacramento earlier this season, with Wembanyama scoring 29 points in that contest.
It's difficult to see Sacramento containing Wembanyama given its defensive struggles throughout the opening fortnight. The Kings have been particularly vulnerable around the basket, and the absence of several rotation players only adds to the challenge of matching San Antonio's size and athleticism. The Spurs have already demonstrated their superiority in this matchup with a 27-point victory, and their confidence should be sky-high following six consecutive wins. Sacramento may benefit from playing at home, but its defensive problems and San Antonio's outstanding form suggest another comfortable result could be on the cards. We're backing the Spurs to cover the 9.5-point handicap.

Portland Trail Blazers at Los Angeles Lakers
Saturday, November 7 | 2:00pm AEDT
The Lakers have made an impressive start to the new campaign, winning seven of their opening nine games and establishing themselves among the Western Conference's early contenders. Luka Doncic has been in outstanding form, producing a 40-point performance in Wednesday's 116-103 victory over Sacramento. Los Angeles have also recorded impressive victories over Toronto and Miami during the past week, demonstrating their ability to generate offence through several different players. Austin Reaves continues to provide valuable scoring alongside Doncic, while Walker Kessler has strengthened the Lakers' interior presence. With the majority of their key players available, Los Angeles will be confident of continuing its strong start on home court.
Portland have arguably been the surprise package of the NBA season, winning six of their opening seven games and sitting at the top of the Western Conference standings. The Trail Blazers have claimed impressive road victories over Denver and Phoenix during the past week, including a commanding 132-119 win against the Suns on Wednesday. Damian Lillard and Scoot Henderson provide Portland with a dangerous backcourt combination, while Deni Avdija and Donovan Clingan have been important contributors at both ends of the floor. The Blazers are dealing with several injury concerns, including the absence of Ja Morant and Shaedon Sharpe, but their impressive early-season results suggest they have the depth to remain competitive.
This shapes as one of the most entertaining games of the weekend, with both teams entering in excellent form and possessing plenty of offensive firepower. The Lakers deserve favouritism on their home floor, particularly with Doncic playing some of the best basketball of his career, but Portland have already demonstrated their ability to trouble Los Angeles this season. The Trail Blazers recorded a 136-129 victory over the Lakers in their previous meeting and have continued to impress on the road against quality opposition. Their defensive intensity and ability to generate scoring opportunities in transition should keep them competitive throughout. We expect a close contest between two of the West's early pace-setters, making Portland with the 3.5-point start our preferred selection.
