NFL 2026-27 Week 6: Commanders at 49ers Preview & Betting Tips

October 18th 2026, 4:35pm, By: Ben Bridge

NFL Betting Tips

Monday Night Football closes out NFL Week 6 with a considerable step down from last week’s Bills v Rams shootout, as the San Francisco 49ers host the Washington Commanders at Levi’s Stadium.

San Francisco enters the matchup 5–0 and have a legitimate claim to being the best team in football. Washington, meanwhile, arrive at 1-3-1 after one of the more embarrassing finishes you will see, somehow allowing a potential overtime win against the Giants to disappear because of disastrous clock management.

The teams have not met since Week 17 of the 2023 season, when San Francisco won 27-10 in Washington. With both rosters having changed significantly over the past three years, that result has very little relevance here.

San Francisco is laying around 7.5 points, which is almost exactly where I have the game priced. I lean slightly towards Washington plus the points, but not strongly enough to get involved. The Commanders should be desperate to respond after last week, but this spread really depends on which version of San Francisco turns up. If the 49ers play within themselves, Washington can stay inside the number. If they hit top gear, this could become ugly quickly.

The total offers a clearer opportunity. This game sat 49.5 on the look-ahead, reopened around 50.5 and has now been pushed all the way to 52.5. I make the total 48, giving me some nice value on the under here.

NFL 2026-27 Week 6: Commanders at 49ers Betting Tips

Last Week Recap

San Francisco 49ers

San Francisco remained unbeaten with a dramatic 32-29 road victory over Seattle, but the final score tells a very different story from the actual offensive performance.

The 49ers scored 32 points. They also managed only 269 total yards, 14 first downs and 4.8 yards per play. Seattle held San Francisco to its lowest yardage and first down totals of the season by a significant margin.

So how did the 49ers get to 32? Turnovers. Seattle gave the ball away four times, with San Francisco scoring 21 first half points directly off Seahawks turnovers. One of those touchdowns came defensively, while two more scoring drives began in the red zone. On the nine San Francisco possessions that did not begin following a Seattle turnover, the 49ers scored only 11 points.

That distinction matters enormously this week. The scoreboard says the San Francisco offense just dropped 32 points on an elite Seattle defence. The underlying numbers say Seattle defended them extremely well.

Brock Purdy was also sacked three times after not being taken down once across the opening four games, and the 49ers lost Deebo Samuel to a hamstring injury during the second half. Samuel is expected to miss multiple weeks, leaving an already depleted receiving corps even thinner.

San Francisco still found a way to win. That is what elite teams do. But I am not using the 32 points as evidence this offence suddenly deserves an inflated Week 6 total.

Washington Commanders

Washington's 27-27 overtime tie against the New York Giants felt far more like a defeat.

The Commanders led by 14 points in the fourth quarter before allowing Jameis Winston and the Giants back into the game, then had a golden opportunity to win it late in overtime. With Washington inside field goal range and no timeouts remaining, Jayden Daniels took another snap rather than just spiking the ball.

He was stopped for no gain. Washington failed to get lined up in time. The clock expired. Game over. Tie.

Head coach Dan Quinn accepted responsibility afterwards, while Daniels also admitted the situational breakdown was unacceptable. It spoiled what had otherwise been an encouraging return from Daniels.

After missing two games with a dislocated elbow, he completed 17 of 25 passes for 199 yards, while adding 103 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Washington also got 82 rushing yards and a touchdown from Jacory Croskey-Merritt, but the offense became increasingly inconsistent as the game progressed.

Defensively, the Commanders were solid early before collapsing late. They allowed the Giants to erase a 14-point deficit over the final 11 minutes of regulation, with Winston eventually throwing three touchdown passes.

Washington now sit 1-3-1, and while the NFC East remains forgiving, this is hardly the ideal spot to recover. The undefeated 49ers await.

Matchup Breakdown

This number is basically where it should be. I make San Francisco around -7.5, so there is no meaningful model edge in either direction.

If forced to choose, I would take Washington. That has less to do with believing the Commanders are suddenly trustworthy and more to do with the possibility San Francisco simply does not need to empty the tank here.

The 49ers are coming off a massive divisional win in Seattle, remain undefeated and now return home against a 1-3-1 opponent.

This is a classic spot where an elite team can control the game without necessarily blowing the opponent away.

San Francisco's receiving injuries also reduce the appeal of laying more than a touchdown.

Deebo is out, Ricky Pearsall is already lost for the season, and several other receivers are still unavailable. Mike Evans is also managing Achilles soreness entering the matchup.

Washington's run defence provides another reason this may remain competitive. The Commanders have allowed only 477 rushing yards at 3.9 yards per carry through five games, putting them among the better run defences in football.

If Washington can prevent Christian McCaffrey and the ground game from completely controlling the matchup, San Francisco may need Purdy to do more through a depleted receiving corps.

That creates some opportunity for the underdog. But let's not pretend Washington are reliable. They just blew a 14-point fourth quarter lead against the Giants and then forgot how clocks work in overtime.

San Francisco could absolutely punish them.

Verdict: Commanders +7.5 is a lean only.

Total Points Market

This is comfortably my favourite bet of the matchup. The market has pushed this total too far. It sat at 49.5 on the look-ahead, reopened around 50.5 and has now climbed to 52.5. I make it approximately 48.

A large part of that movement appears to be tied to San Francisco scoring 32 points in Seattle. But as outlined earlier, that number is misleading.

The 49ers generated only 269 yards and 4.8 yards per play. Seattle's turnovers handed them 21 first half points, including a defensive score and multiple short fields. That is not sustainable offensive production.

San Francisco's defence also deserves more respect than the current total suggests. The 49ers rank sixth in total defence, allowing only 297.2 yards per game, and have surrendered just eight offensive touchdowns through five weeks. That matters against a Washington offense that has lacked consistency.

Daniels remains dangerous, particularly with his legs, but the Commanders have scored more than 27 points only once this season.

San Francisco also has the personnel to make his life uncomfortable. Washington's offensive line struggled with pressure last week, and left tackle has become a problem following Laremy Tunsil's absence. Brandon Coleman has allowed significant pressure in replacement duty, while Nick Bosa has a chance to return for San Francisco this week.

There is also a game script angle. If San Francisco establish control, I do not expect Kyle Shanahan to chase style points. They are undefeated. They are banged up at receiver. They have a bigger matchup next week to worry about than trying to score 40 here.

A steady McCaffrey-based approach, long drives and a strong defensive performance could keep this comfortably below the current number.

Something like 27-20 or 28-17, or even 34-14 feels much more realistic than the market implying another 50+ point total.

Under 52.5 (Best Bet)

$1.90 (1.5 Units)

Key Players & Prop Markets

George Kittle - Over 63.5 Receiving Yards

If San Francisco are going to throw the football, Kittle should be heavily involved. Deebo Samuel is out. The remaining receiver group is thin. And Washington have been dreadful defending tight ends.

Through five games, the Commanders have allowed approximately 372 receiving yards and seven touchdowns to the position. That is a massive problem against one of the best tight ends in football.

The Commanders' strength against the run could also push Shanahan towards more play-action and intermediate passing rather than simply feeding McCaffrey 25 carries.

Kittle should operate as Purdy's most reliable option between the numbers. This prop also fits the under. I do not need San Francisco throwing 40 times. I just need the available targets to become concentrated around their best weapons.

George Kittle over 64.5 receiving yards

$1.92 (1 Unit)

Mike Evans - Over 73.5 Receiving Yards

This follows the same logic. San Francisco is increasingly short on legitimate receiving options. That means Evans should command targets whenever Purdy drops back.

The veteran was one of the few San Francisco offensive players who consistently created against Seattle last week, and Washington's defence has been far more vulnerable through the air than on the ground.

There is one issue worth monitoring. Evans has been dealing with Achilles soreness and missed practice earlier in the week. Obviously, this play requires him to be cleared without any meaningful workload limitation.

Assuming he is good to go, the matchup and target concentration make 73.5 achievable. Washington should make San Francisco work harder on the ground than most opponents have.

That leaves Evans and Kittle as the obvious beneficiaries.

Mike Evans over 72.5 receiving yards

$1.88 (1.25 Units)

Anytime Touchdown Markets

George Kittle anytime touchdown

This is the straightforward tight end play.

Washington have allowed seven touchdowns to tight ends through five games, and Kittle remains one of Purdy's most trusted redzone options.

With Deebo unavailable, his red-zone importance only increases. San Francisco do not need to score five touchdowns for this to cash. If they get inside the 10 two or three times, Kittle should have opportunities.

George Kittle anytime touchdown

$2.20 (1 Unit)

Luke Farrell anytime touchdown - $9.50 (Small Play)

Now we get speculative.

Farrell has yet to score his first touchdown as a 49er, but this is exactly the sort of matchup where a secondary tight end can sneak into the end zone.

Washington's problems defending the position extend beyond simply allowing yardage. Seven tight-end touchdowns in five games suggests a genuine structural weakness around the goal line.

Farrell will never command enough targets for this to be anything more than a small bet. But at $9.50, we do not need volume. One play-action leak near the goal line is enough.

Luke Farrell anytime touchdown

$9.50 (0.25 Units)

Final Thoughts

This is a game where the scoreboard from last week may be creating opportunity. Anyone simply seeing 49ers 32, Seahawks 29 could reasonably assume San Francisco were involved in an offensive shootout.

They weren't. Seattle turned the football over four times. San Francisco scored 21 points directly off those mistakes. The 49ers offence produced only 269 yards. That is a very different story.

Now the total has climbed from a look-ahead of 49.5 to 52.5, despite San Francisco losing another major receiving weapon and Washington facing one of the league's better defences.

That is too high for me.

The spread is much more difficult. San Francisco could absolutely dominate if Washington repeat last week's mistakes, but laying 7.5 against a Commanders team capable of moving the football with Daniels isn't particularly attractive either.

So, I'll leave the side alone and attack the inflated total. Expect San Francisco to control the game, lean on their defence and take what Washington give them through Kittle and Evans.

It may not be the most exciting Monday Night Football game of the season. That's perfectly fine. We are betting on fewer points.

Prediction: 49ers 27, Commanders 21
