Thursday's NBA schedule is packed with 14 games, including some intriguing clashes between the competition's early-season contenders. Philadelphia travel to Detroit for a showdown between two of the Eastern Conference's hottest teams, while Houston look to continue their impressive start when they host Minnesota.
The 76ers and Pistons have combined for 13 wins from their opening 15 games, making their rematch one of the standout fixtures. Detroit's outstanding defence will be tested against Philadelphia's star-studded lineup, while the Rockets will be aiming to extend their unbeaten home record against a Timberwolves side dealing with the absence of Anthony Edwards.
Elsewhere, Portland head to Phoenix looking to maintain their excellent road form against a Suns outfit struggling defensively and on the boards. We've identified three betting opportunities across Thursday's slate, with our NBA predictions, analysis and best bets below.

Philadelphia 76ers at Detroit Pistons

Detroit’s 6-1 start has been built on the league’s best defensive rating, allowing 102.4 points per 100 possessions. Their attack has been more productive than Philadelphia’s too, with the Pistons scoring 114.2 per 100 possessions compared with the Sixers’ 111.2. Seven games is a small sample, but Detroit have done more than scrape through close finishes. Four of their six wins have come with the opposition scoring fewer than 95 points, and they have maintained that defensive standard despite Jalen Duren’s absence.
Philadelphia’s 7-1 record is impressive, particularly with two wins over New York and another against Cleveland. Their defence has been the stronger part of their game, though. The Sixers are still working through their half-court offence, and their collection of stars hasn’t yet translated into consistently efficient scoring. Joel Embiid and VJ Edgecombe are expected to play after missing the first Detroit meeting, but Embiid is managing plantar fasciitis and played under a minutes restriction against Chicago. His presence improves Philadelphia’s options without removing the uncertainty around his workload.
Detroit -2.5 is the selection. Their 106-93 win in the first meeting needs to be viewed in light of Philadelphia’s absences, but the Pistons were already without Duren themselves. The case for backing them rests more on their broader defensive form and the Sixers’ unfinished offence than that single result. Philadelphia have enough talent to make this close, which keeps the stake at 1 unit, but Detroit have shown more convincing form at both ends and only need a 3-point home win to cover.

Minnesota Timberwolves at Houston Rockets
Thursday 5 November 2026 | 12:30pm AEDT
Houston’s attacking improvement has substance behind it. Over their opening five games, the Rockets were taking more shots at the rim and from three than last season, with fewer midrange attempts and a strong rate of getting to the foul line. Through eight games, they have scored 122.6 points per 100 possessions. Their 39.1 per cent three-point shooting has helped and shouldn’t be taken for granted, but the change in shot selection gives their start more substance than a few players getting hot. They’re also 4-0 at home.
Minnesota have split their four games without Anthony Edwards, although the opposition matters. The wins came against the Clippers and Bucks, both struggling near the bottom of their conferences, while Golden State and San Antonio beat them. Chris Finch has stressed the need to run more after defensive rebounds to help replace Edwards’ scoring. That remains a work in progress. The Wolves do have a potential advantage inside, with Steven Adams out and Clint Capela questionable, making Houston’s minutes without Alperen Sengun a concern.
The 8.5-point line asks Houston to win comfortably, but their offensive form and Minnesota’s results against stronger opposition support the bet. The Rockets have already beaten San Antonio away and have won all four home games by double figures. Minnesota could keep this close if they control the boards, but Houston have been producing enough offence to build winning margins against a range of opponents. Their hot shooting and uncertain centre depth keep this to 1 unit, with the Rockets the pick to cover.

Portland Trail Blazers at Phoenix Suns
Thursday 5 November 2026 | 1:00pm AEDT
Portland’s 5-1 start includes four road wins, with victories in Utah and Denver since Ja Morant went down. Those two results carry different weight. Utah were missing Jaren Jackson Jr. and Jusuf Nurkic, while winning in Denver was a tougher assignment. The Blazers also collected 21 offensive rebounds against the Nuggets, giving them enough extra opportunities to win despite trailing earlier in the game. With Damian Lillard, Deni Avdija and Jrue Holiday available, Morant’s absence hasn’t left them relying on one player to create their offence.
Phoenix’s problems have been harder to solve. They rank last defensively, conceding 124.5 points per 100 possessions, and are tied last for rebounding margin. The rebounding issue was evident before their latest loss, with the Suns also conceding the most second-chance points through their opening four games. Against Golden State, even their best opponent field-goal percentage of the season wasn’t enough. They lost the rebound count 44-37 and conceded 31 made free throws. Mark Williams remains unavailable.
That is the strongest reason to back Portland -3.5. Phoenix need to improve several parts of their defence at once, while the Blazers have the available size to keep testing their work on the boards. The opening 41-point win over the Suns is unlikely to be repeated, especially without Morant, but this bet only requires a 4-point margin. Portland’s road results and Phoenix’s recurring difficulty finishing defensive possessions make the Blazers the strongest selection of the three, for 1.5 units.
