NBL27 Round 7 continues on Thursday night with a Queensland derby that carries plenty of significance for both clubs, as the Brisbane Bullets host the Cairns Taipans at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre.
It's been a refreshing start to the season for two teams that have endured their share of struggles in recent years. Rather than fighting to stay off the bottom of the ladder, Brisbane and Cairns are both firmly in the finals conversation, with genuine optimism building around their respective campaigns. While neither side has established itself among the competition's heavyweights just yet, both have shown enough to suggest they could be difficult opponents as the season progresses. The challenge now is turning those promising signs into sustained success and proving they belong in the playoff picture.
Bookmakers have struggled to separate the two teams, setting up what promises to be a fascinating contest. We take a closer look at the Bullets vs Taipans matchup, betting odds and best bets, along with our three-leg Dabble Pick'Em selection.

Brisbane Bullets Finding Ways Through Injury Troubles
Brisbane head home at 4-4 after beating Illawarra 98-81 on Saturday. They allowed a 20-point half-time lead to shrink to three, but steadied to pull away in the final quarter. It was a useful response to their heavy loss in Tasmania, although Will Weaver will want fewer lapses against a Cairns side with plenty of scoring options.
Raul Neto gives Brisbane an experienced replacement for the injured Arnas Velicka. He contributed 11 points and four assists in his first start against the Hawks, and having more time with his teammates should help. Nate Hinton has been a consistent contributor through the changes, scoring in double figures in all eight games.
Tyrell Harrison returned against Illawarra after missing just the Tasmania game with an ankle injury, finishing with 14 points and eight rebounds. With Jacob Holt still out, keeping Harrison out of foul trouble will be important. Brisbane have won three of their four home games, giving them some encouragement heading into Thursday.
Cairns Taipans Welcome Another Scoring Option
Cairns improved to 5-4 with Sunday’s 86-84 win over New Zealand. Jaylin Galloway made his club debut after recovering from shoulder surgery, finishing with 18 points and six assists. It was an encouraging start, and his return gives Adam Forde another player who can create opportunities alongside Jack McVeigh.
There was still plenty for Forde to pick apart. Cairns spent much of the game behind and needed a strong final quarter to turn it around, while New Zealand’s 11 missed free throws helped their cause. Getting the win mattered, but it wasn’t a performance that answered every question about their consistency.
The Taipans have won two of six away games, beating Melbourne and Illawarra but suffering some heavy defeats elsewhere. They also won the first meeting with Brisbane 97-91, with Jaylon Brown scoring 25 points and McVeigh making important plays late. That result should give them confidence, even with this game on Brisbane’s floor.
Bullets vs Taipans Betting Tips
This is a tricky game to call, but I prefer Brisbane at home. Harrison gives them a chance to put pressure on Cairns around the basket after recording 23 points and 18 rebounds in the first meeting. Brisbane still lost that game, though, so they need more than another strong performance inside.
The Bullets must defend Brown better and make McVeigh work for his opportunities. Galloway adds another threat, and Cairns have already shown they can win on the road against capable opposition.
Neither side has been consistent enough to warrant a strong bet. With home advantage and Neto getting more time to settle in, I’m narrowly siding with Brisbane for one unit.
