Melbourne United Need to Finish the Job
Melbourne let another opportunity slip in Friday’s 103-102 loss to Perth. They led by six inside the final two minutes, but Cole Anthony fouled out before Brandon Knight hit the winner. Coming after their two-point loss to Illawarra, it leaves United at 3-5 with some frustrating results to reflect on.
Luke Travers scored 26 points and Josh Oduro added 22 against the Wildcats, giving Melbourne useful support around Anthony. It was an encouraging offensive performance, although Oduro faces a tougher assignment against Sydney’s frontcourt. With Chris Goulding still sidelined, United need contributions across the rotation.
The quick turnaround from Perth adds to the challenge. Melbourne have shown they can compete, but their defence and execution haven’t been consistent enough. They cannot afford to give Sydney easy baskets and then rely on their offence to make up the difference.
Sydney Kings Finding Their Rhythm
Sydney improved to 5-2 with Thursday’s 108-82 win over Illawarra, backing up their comfortable victory against Perth. Kendric Davis finished with 23 points and 14 assists without a turnover, while Andrew Carr contributed 16 points and 20 rebounds off the bench.
The trip to Wollongong was Sydney’s first away game after opening the season with six designated home fixtures, including their game in Canberra. They handled that first road assignment comfortably, but Melbourne should provide a tougher test. Their win over Perth also came against a Wildcats side missing key players, which puts those recent results into perspective.
Brian Goorjian has been making greater use of his reserves while Matthew Dellavedova remains out. Torrey Craig and Makuach Maluach have provided valuable scoring support, making it harder for opponents to focus solely on Davis.
United vs Kings Betting Tips
I’m backing Melbourne in what looks a fairly even contest. Their recent losses have exposed problems with finishing games, but they have remained competitive and have enough scoring options to test Sydney.
The key is containing Davis without giving his teammates too much space. Shea Ili’s defensive pressure should help, while United need to compete on the boards and avoid the turnovers that allow Sydney to run.
The turnaround from Perth is a concern, and Sydney are deservedly attracting support. Even so, I think United have a reasonable chance at home and the price is enough for a small bet.
