NRL Round 1 throws up a classic betting spot at 4 Pines Park, as Manly host Canberra in a genuine “line-in-the-sand” opener for two clubs heading in very different directions. Early-season markets can be slow to adjust to roster turnover, role changes, and how quickly teams find their identity, and that’s exactly why this game appeals from a wagering perspective. Canberra’s path to points is simple: win the middle, own the ruck, and force Manly to defend long sets without Daly Cherry-Evans to get them over the line when it inevitably gets tight. We take you through our Sea Eagles vs Raiders betting tips below!

Sea Eagles vs Raiders Prediction & Tips: 2026 NRL Round 1
Raiders Aiming to Build on Impressive 2025
The Raiders enter 2026 with genuine credibility after a 2025 season that re-established them as a Premiership contender. The Raiders claimed the 2025 minor premiership (19 wins, 4 losses at the point it was clinched) and did it with the type of profile that tends to travel well, physicality, efficiency, and a consistent ability to win the contact battle.
But the sting for Raiders fans is how it ended. Despite finishing first, the Raiders were bundled out in straight sets, capped by a 32–12 loss to Cronulla in the Semi Finals. That matters here, because Round 1 becomes an immediate litmus test, you don’t get points for last year’s ladder position, and the Raiders’ focus should be on tightening the areas that become magnified against top sides: red-zone execution, handling under fatigue, and discipline when games tighten late.
Personnel-wise, Canberra also begins life without Jamal Fogarty, and that’s a huge talking point because his replacement (Ethan Sanders) gets thrown straight into a high-pressure matchup against Fogarty’s new club. The good news for Canberra is the environment around Sanders is strong: Kaeo Weekes at the back, strike on the edges, and, most importantly for this matchup, a forward rotation built to suffocate teams through the middle (Papalii, Tapine, Horsburgh, Young, and Morgan Smithies).
Sea Eagles Begin Post-DCE Era at Home
Manly were about as close as you could get to an average football team last season, going 12-12 and finishing with a +0.875 points differential per game. Entering the 2026 season, the big story line is a fresh look spine, with the departure of Daly Cherry-Evans to the Roosters. Manly recruitment has done well, managing to bring in Jamal Fogarty to replace DCE, but the big game experience loss is huge for a team that will once again be battling every inch of the way for a finals berth.
Looking for positives, and Manly get important size back in the middle/edge mix with Taniela Paseka and Haumole Olakau’atu named to start Round 1 after both missed large chunks of last season through injury.
The question for Manly in this particular matchup isn’t talent, it’s whether they can match Canberra’s power for 80 minutes. Against a Raiders pack that loves turning games into trench warfare, Manly’s path to winning often requires their outside backs to win the yardage battle and force the Raiders to compress. If Canberra hold the middle, Manly’s attack can become edge-to-edge without the platform to land punches.
Sea Eagles vs Raiders Recent History (Last 5 Meetings)
These sides have traded some big momentum swings across the last couple of seasons, and the scoring profile is telling, when Manly get rolling at home, it can get ugly quickly, but Canberra have also shown they can land a punch at Brookvale if they can hang in the arm wrestle.

Raiders to Start the Year with a Statement
This is a matchup where I’m happy to keep it simple: Canberra’s forward pack is stronger, deeper, and more suited to Round 1 footy. Early in the season, when timing is still forming and edges aren’t as sharp, games regularly tilt toward the team that wins the middle third and controls the ruck speed, and that profile screams Raiders.
I also love the “Fogarty angle” here, but not in the sentimental way. Yes, Manly’s new halfback improves them structurally, but Canberra knows exactly what he wants to do, from how he builds sets, the kicks he prefers, and where he likes his pack to land. On the other side, Fogarty’s replacement (Sanders) doesn’t need to be a superstar in Round 1, he just needs to play straight, kick long, and let Canberra’s pack and edge runners do the heavy lifting.
If the Raiders win the collision early, Manly’s attack can get squeezed into low-percentage shifts, and that’s where Canberra’s line speed and competitiveness can turn this into a game played on their terms.

Sea Eagles vs Raiders Player Prop Bet
Lehi Hopoate showed again last year that he is the long-term successor to Trbojevic at the back, but he is also a particularly good winger who knows his way to the line. With the Raiders’ right edge missing Matt Timoko, the Sea Eagles should go left often.
