Welcome to our 'Lay of the Day’ where we’ll highlight a horse (sometimes multiple) that our racing experts expect won’t win the race, and as such, are keen to take on by placing a lay bet at Betfair.
These horse racing lay picks typically aren't long shots with no chance of success. Instead, they are runners with relatively low odds that are our racing experts consider to be overvalued in the betting market.
Placing a lay bet is only possible for Australians by betting with world's largest online betting exchange, Betfair. If you don’t already have a Betfair account, click here to join Betfair.

Lay of the Day - Wednesday, April 17th 2024
Geelong Race 5: Aviso Integral Handicap - 3:20pm (AEST)
(1) Verifier races in an an easier race here but does have to carry more weight (60.5kg) which is of slight concern for the favourite. I think the gelding will run on quite nicely from the back but taking $2.70 on a horse which has only won once from 17 starts, well I’m not sure about that. He has been punted on over the last 24 hours and has shortened but his only win was 10 months ago. (6) Running On Time from the leading Maher stable looks solid and is higher odds as is (7) Amphactor from the Kavanough yard. The latter races on speed and will be hard to run past, while Running On Time has drawn inside and was only beaten a nose at Yarra Valley last start.

What is Lay Betting?
Lay betting is when you’re betting against an event to occur. You’re betting that a horse won’t win a race, a team won’t win a match or your player will lose to their opponent.
It’s a perfectly viable and reasonable way to bet, and it’s unique to the Betfair Exchange.
On the Betfair Exchange, when you place a lay bet, you are effectively acting as the bookie and offering a price that other people can place a Back bet with you.
To place a lay bet, click in the pink Lay column on the Betfair Exchange and enter the profit you would like to make and the site will display your risk (liability). By clicking on the odds already displayed, you are accepting the odds set by the punter who wants to place the corresponding Back bet at that price. If you want the odds more in your favour, just enter the odds you would like and wait until a punter matches your price on the exchange.
Just make sure you have enough funds in your Betfair account to cover your liability or you won’t be able to place the lay bet. Find out more in our educational article What Is Lay Betting?
