Flemington Racing Tips: Monday January 1st

December 31st 2023, 11:23pm, By: Brendan Bunworth

Flemington Racing Tips

Happy New Year 2024, and let’s get off to a good start on the punt! Here, we concentrate on Flemington which has its traditional New Year's Day meeting with the first of eight getting underway at 1:10pm (AEDT). The track is currently rated a Soft 5 a few days out from the meeting, but there is a chance of an upgrade with no rain predicted on Sunday and Monday. The Bagot Handicap is the feature event which will be run over 2800m.

Find our best bets for Flemington below and makes sure to head over to our Racing Tips page for more free tips from around the country on New Year’s Day!

Flemington Racing Tips: Monday, January 1st 2023

Race 1: Victorian Jockeys Association Sprint - 1:10pm (AEDT)

(1) Midtown Boss is an ultra consistent gelding from the Laurie stable who has had 2 jumpouts for his new stable. Before those he was beaten a neck at Flemington over 1100m after he made significant ground down the straight late. He will likely get back again here but with a little pace on here will be right in the mix at the end for Stackhouse who got a winner on Saturday at The Valley and is riding in fine form. He does have to carry 60.5kg which is a concern but I think he is better than these.

(4) Mornington Glory was a good thing beaten here last start I reckon after he sustained a hip n shoulder as the barriers unfolded. He kept finding to the line to eventually go down by a nose.

(7) Mr Tickles has been freshened since running on nicely for 3rd at Bendigo. Shinn is on and he will likely settle just in front of the fav (Midtown Boss).

Race 5: 2024 Stud and Stable Awards - 3:40pm (AEDT)

*Scratched* (11) Divine Purpose was well beaten when 6th at Ballarat last start but that was on an unsuitable Heavy surface. She should get a Soft or Good track here with the latter the better. Hefel will steer from barrier 7 and if she can settle in the “one one” that would be ideal I think. On Good tracks she has won 3 times from 7 attempts and she was beaten a nose at Caulfield two starts back on the Good so that could have easily been 4 from 7.

(12) My Brothers Keeper has been racing poorly really but gets another chance to position up nicely from a good barrier in 3. Last prep he was really impressive and this is probably his last chance to show something here. A top 3 placing at odds isn’t out of the question.  First try here.

(14) Star Vega ran on nicely at The Valley last start behind Zamborghini who was fav again on Saturday. The bigger straight could be the key here as they opted out of The Valley on the weekend in preference for this.

Race 6: The Bagot Handicap - 4:20pm (AEDT)

(8) Glentaneous comes into this a week after winning at The Valley over 2500m. Damien Lane stays on and despite this race being harder, he drops 6kg in weight for this which is the key stat. Frombarrier 7 he will position up midfield and try to go t sleep for 1000m before creeping into the race at the 600m. He has had 4 runs since November 9 in races 1800m in distance or more so he is super fit and this one might see him out for the campaign until the Autumn. He has a good association with Lane who has won twice on top from 4 starts and as a jock he will be equally as keen to start the New Year with a healthy win ratio. It's the first time over the distance for Glentaneous but by all indications he should run it out.

(4) Herman Hesse is a big chance if the track is Good and he is one that can definitely run the distance. He has had 2 starts over the course and hasn’t run top 3 which is a slight concern but third up here he should be fitter and run well. The concern is that he doesn’t win often, in fact, 15 months. A Place bet looks value though.

(2) Regal Power won well last start at Caulfield over 2400m with Gaudray on top but does rise another kilo for the effort. He likes Dry tracks and will settle around 4th from barrier 5. He has a good winning strike rate having won on 25 percent of race starts and distance is a slight query but let’s see.

(8) Glentaneous

$2.80 (3 Units)
