Sunday evening at Allianz Stadium closes the round with one of the toughest games to handicap. The Sharks have been playing some really good footy over the past month, and they may be close to a major boost with both Nicho Hynes and Blayke Brailey named on the extended bench. Cronulla also get KL Iro and Jesse Ramien in the centres, with Ronaldo Mulitalo back on the wing and Addin Fonua-Blake leading the pack.
The Roosters, meanwhile, have lost three of their past four, so the obvious play at first glance is Sharks with the start. But betting is not always about the obvious side. The Roosters are back at Allianz, still have James Tedesco, Daly Cherry-Evans, Sam Walker, Reece Robson, Lindsay Collins, Angus Crichton and Victor Radley named, and the desperation should be enormous.
This is not a confident bet, because Cronulla are dangerous and the Hynes/Brailey late mail could shift everything. But with the Roosters at home and needing to respond, I’ll take them to cover -4.5.

Roosters vs Sharks Prediction & Tips: 2026 NRL Round 16
Roosters Need to Stop the Slide
The Roosters are in a slightly awkward spot. They still look strong on paper, and their best football is good enough to beat most teams in the competition, but losing three of their past four has changed the feel around them. This is no longer a side simply building toward finals; they need to start banking wins and restoring confidence.
The team list still has plenty to like. Tedesco at fullback gives them yardage and support play, Cherry-Evans and Walker provide a high-level halves combination, and Robson gives them control at hooker. Through the middle, Whyte, Collins, Radley, Leniu, Butcher and Crichton are more than capable of matching Cronulla physically.
The issue has been consistency. The Roosters have had games where their attack looks sharp and direct, but also periods where they lose patience and invite pressure. Against a Sharks side that can score quickly, they cannot afford soft errors, poor kick finishes or edge defensive lapses.
Origin backing up is another factor. Tedesco, Collins, Radley and others have been involved in the representative period, and this is another reason to keep staking sensible. But the Roosters are not in a position where they can treat this casually. They need their best players on the park, and they need a statement.
At home, with a strong spine and the line under a converted try, I think the bounce back spot is real.
Sharks Form Hard to Ignore
Cronulla have been one of the better stories of the last month because they have managed to keep winning and competing despite missing key spine pieces. Niwhai Puru has done a solid job alongside Braydon Trindall, Jayden Berrell has filled in at hooker, and the forward pack has continued to give them enough momentum to stay dangerous.
Their current team list looks stronger than it has in recent weeks. William Kennedy, Sione Katoa, Jesse Ramien, KL Iro and Ronaldo Mulitalo make up an excellent back five, while Trindall and Puru continue in the halves. Fonua-Blake, Berrell, Colquhoun, Nikora, Wilton and McInnes give them a strong starting pack, with Kaufusi, Talakai and Hazelton on the bench.
The big question is Hynes and Brailey. Both have been named on the extended bench, and if either is a late inclusion, the Sharks become a vastly different attacking proposition. Hynes gives them polish, kicking and game management, while Brailey changes their ruck control. Hynes has been dealing with a calf issue and Brailey has been returning from an arm injury, which makes final team lists crucial.
The Sharks are good enough to win this game. There is no doubt about that. They have strike out wide, a powerful middle and confidence. But the uncertainty around who actually plays, plus the Roosters’ desperation at home, keeps me from jumping on Cronulla with the start.
Roosters vs Sharks Recent History
These teams have already met once this season, with the Roosters beating the Sharks 34-22 in Perth back in Round 6. That result matters because it showed the home side can handle Cronulla’s power and still create enough points through their own spine and edges.
Recent results:
• 2026 Round 6: Roosters def Sharks 34-22
• 2025 Elimination Final: Sharks def Roosters 20-10
• 2025 Round 20: Sharks def Roosters 31-18
• 2025 Round 12: Roosters def Sharks 42-16
• 2024 Round 11: Sharks def Roosters 38-30
Cronulla got the better of Sydney twice late last season, including in the finals, so the Roosters should not lack motivation here.
Roosters Desperation Wins Out
This is the hardest of the four games for me. The Sharks are playing well, and if Hynes and Brailey both come in late, the bet becomes much less attractive. But as things stand, I’m siding with desperation and home ground.
The Roosters cannot keep drifting. Losing three of four with this roster is not good enough, and Allianz Stadium is exactly where they need to reset. Their spine is too experienced, their forward pack too strong, and their outside backs too dangerous to keep producing uneven performances.
The key is control. If Cherry-Evans and Walker kick well, the Roosters can force Cronulla’s reshuffled spine to work out of poor field position. If Robson gets the ruck moving and Tedesco is involved through the middle, the home team can stress the Sharks defensively before Hynes or Brailey are even factors.
Cronulla’s best route is obvious: win the middle through Fonua-Blake, get Trindall playing downhill, and attack the Roosters’ edges. They are capable of doing that. But with the line at -4.5, I only need the Roosters to win by a converted try, and I think the desperation spot gets them there.
This is not a heavy bet. There is too much late mail uncertainty. But the Roosters at home, needing a response, are the side I want.

Roosters vs Sharks Player Prop Bet
Angus Crichton has started looking much stronger as the season has progressed, and despite only crossing twice this season, I like the rangy back rower to score here against the Sharks.

Roosters vs Sharks Same Game Multi
Leg 1: Roosters ML – See best bet.
Leg 2 A Crichton (1+ try) – See above best prop bet.
Leg 3: B Nikora (1+ try) – This one looks even better if Hynes is back, but I still like it regardless. Nikora, like Crichton, hasn’t had much impact earlier in the season. But after playing in Origin, he looks back to his best.
