NRL Round 22 concludes at CommBank Stadium on Sunday, where the Wests Tigers host Parramatta in a matchup between two teams whose finals hopes have ended. Ordinarily, this would be an uncomfortable game to bet heavily. My underlying numbers suggest the line has moved far enough that the Tigers should potentially offer value. I cannot get there.
The Tigers are playing atrocious football, have lost six consecutive games, and were dismantled 56-10 by Canberra last weekend. More concerning than the scoreboard is the apparent breakdown in standards around the club. Adam Doueihi missed the Raiders match amid internal tension before returning to training and being recalled at halfback this week.
There is still enough talent in the Tigers’ side to make the mathematical case for taking the points. Jarome Luai, Api Koroisau, Jahream Bula, Sunia Turuva, Terrell May and Fonua Pole are all capable first grade players. However, the team is currently producing far less than the sum of those parts.
Parramatta competed strongly in a 24-18 loss to Penrith and welcome Junior Paulo back through the interchange. With Mitchell Moses controlling the game and a dangerous backline outside him, the Eels are capable of turning Wests’ current defensive collapse into another ugly scoreboard.
This hurts to say, particularly when my numbers point the other way, but Eels -7.5 is the bet.

Tigers’ Season Descends Into Chaos
The Tigers’ 56-10 defeat to Canberra was the low point of a season that has rapidly unravelled. The Tigers entered the match on a losing run but were still expected to provide some resistance against a Raiders side sitting outside the top eight. Instead, they conceded 10 tries and looked completely incapable of slowing Canberra once momentum turned.
The Raiders scored 98 points across three consecutive victories, with more than half of that total coming against the Tigers. Wests were beaten through the middle, exposed on the edges, and offered almost nothing with the ball once the score began to grow.
The absence of Adam Doueihi became a major story before kick off. Doueihi had been left out of the halves and did not play amid reports of a breakdown between the player and coaching staff. He has since returned to training and been named at halfback alongside Jarome Luai.
On paper, that combination should improve the Tigers. Doueihi gives them a stronger kicking game and direct running threat, allowing Luai to focus more heavily on creating. Heamasi Makasini also returns in the centres, while Sunia Turuva shifts to the wing.
The issue is whether a team in this emotional state can simply be repaired through selection changes. Wests have not looked connected defensively, and their reaction to adversity has been alarming. Once Canberra scored twice, the Tigers’ line speed disappeared and their effort around the ruck declined.
Benji Marshall still has quality through the middle. Terrell May and Fonua Pole can generate yardage, Koroisau remains dangerous from dummy half and Alex Twal provides defensive work rate at lock. Samuela and Sione Fainu give Wests mobility on the edges.
Those players should prevent the Tigers from being as bad as they were in Canberra. The problem is that they should have prevented several of the previous losses as well. Until the side demonstrates a genuine response, it is difficult to trust them with betting money.
Eels Competitive but Unable to Finish Against Panthers
Parramatta’s 24-18 loss to Penrith was frustrating but encouraging. The Eels raced to a 12-0 lead against the competition leaders and gave themselves a genuine chance of producing a major upset before the Panthers gradually regained control.
Unlike the Tigers, Parramatta remained competitive after momentum shifted. They continued defending, created opportunities late and forced Penrith to work for the result. That does not change their disappointing season, but it does provide a far healthier platform entering this matchup.
Mitchell Moses is the key difference between the teams. His long kicking game should allow Parramatta to repeatedly test the Tigers’ confidence coming out of their own end. If the Eels complete at a reasonable rate, Moses can keep the Tigers pinned deep and force a struggling defensive unit to repeatedly begin sets under pressure.
Isaiah Iongi provides speed and support from fullback, while Josh Addo-Carr remains one of the competition’s most dangerous finishers. Will Penisini gives them power in the centres, and Ronald Volkman can play a complementary role beside Moses.
Junior Paulo’s return from a knee injury is another significant inclusion. He has been named on the bench for his first appearance since Round 11. Paulo may not be asked to play enormous minutes immediately, but his ball playing, and experience should help Parramatta when the starting middles leave the field.
The Eels still have flaws. Their season has included defensive collapses, poor execution, and several narrow losses that stronger teams would have converted into wins. They are not suddenly a trustworthy double-digit favourite.
However, this is less about Parramatta becoming elite and more about the opponent’s current state. The Eels showed far greater resolve against Penrith than Wests have displayed during their six-game losing run.
Tigers vs Eels Recent History
These teams met earlier this season in the traditional Easter Monday clash, with Wests producing one of their best performances of the year to win 22-20 in golden point. Jock Madden kicked two decisive penalty goals after Parramatta had fought back late to lead by 2 with just over a minute remaining.

Ignore the Numbers and Back Parramatta
This is an unusual betting position because my ratings do not fully agree with the selection. At Eels -7.5, the market is asking Parramatta to win comfortably despite sitting 15th and producing an inconsistent season of their own.
Purely on numbers, the Tigers should probably be the side. They regain Doueihi, possess several established attacking players and defeated Parramatta earlier this year. CommBank Stadium is also not a conventional away venue for either club.
The problem is that ratings assume a functional football team. The Tigers currently do not look functional.
Six consecutive losses, a 46-point defeat and a week of internal drama create a situation where standard power ratings become less dependable. The Tigers may produce a response and make this selection look foolish, but they may just as easily concede early and collapse again.
Parramatta are well equipped to test that fragility. Moses can turn the Tigers around, Addo-Carr can punish edge mistakes and Paulo’s return strengthens the middle rotation. If the Eels establish an early lead, there is a realistic path to 40 or even 50 points.
The Tigers’ attack should improve with Doueihi back, and that is the primary danger. Luai, Doueihi, Bula and Koroisau are too talented to remain completely ineffective forever. Wests may score enough points to keep this inside the number even while losing.
But betting is not only about the raw model. Context matters, and everything surrounding the Tigers points toward a club whose standards have collapsed. Their defensive effort against Canberra was unacceptable, and one week is a very short period in which to repair those issues.
The Eels at least competed against the best team in the competition. They led Penrith 12-0, stayed within a converted try, and gave themselves chances late. Reproducing that level should be enough to handle Wests comfortably.
It hurts because my numbers say Tigers. My eyes, the recent form, and the state of the two clubs all say Parramatta.
I will trust the latter and take the Eels to cover. If the Tigers concede the opening two tries, this could become another extremely long Sunday afternoon for Benji Marshall and his players.
