Panthers vs Raiders Preview & Betting Tips: NRL Round 22 2026

July 31st 2026, 1:24am, By: Ben Bridge

Panthers vs Raiders Betting Tips

Saturday evening brings NRL football back to Glen Willow Oval in Mudgee, where the Panthers face one of the competition’s hottest teams in the Canberra Raiders. Penrith remain on top of the ladder and possess the strongest season long statistical profile, but their recent football has been considerably less convincing than their position suggests.

The Raiders arrive after three consecutive victories in which they have scored a combined 98 points, culminating in a devastating 56-10 win over the Tigers. The Raiders have rediscovered their attacking confidence, their young spine is playing with freedom and their forward pack is again creating the platform required to trouble elite opposition.

The market has Penrith around -8.5, and I am happy to take the points. The Panthers still deserve favouritism, but their recent form does not justify asking them to win by more than two scores against an opponent carrying genuine momentum. I will also have a small sprinkle on Canberra’s money line, and the upset could feature in my same game multi.

Penrith remain without Dylan Edwards due to a shoulder injury, leaving Jaxen Edgar at fullback. Jack Cogger replaces Blaize Talagi at five-eighth after Talagi’s defensive struggles against Parramatta. Canberra regains Owen Pattie from suspension, while Joseph Tapine, Corey Horsburgh, Josh Papalii and Morgan Smithies headline a pack capable of meeting Penrith physically.

Panthers vs Raiders Prediction & Tips: 2026 NRL Round 22

Panthers Escape but Continue to Look Vulnerable

Penrith recorded their 14th victory of the season with a 24-18 win over Parramatta, but the performance raised more questions than it answered. The Eels raced to a 12-0 lead and looked capable of producing an upset before the Panthers gradually regained control and escaped with a six-point victory.

Winning while below your best is generally a positive sign, particularly for a team with Penrith’s experience. However, the Panthers have now produced several performances where their attack has looked disjointed, and their defence has been placed under more pressure than usual. The margin between their best football and their recent output is substantial.

Dylan Edwards’ absence remains important. Jaxen Edgar has handled the fullback role with enthusiasm, but Edwards is central to Penrith’s yardage, defensive organisation and attacking shape. Without him, Nathan Cleary and Isaah Yeo have been required to carry more of the organisational burden.

Ivan Cleary has responded by moving Jack Cogger into five-eighth and dropping Blaize Talagi to the reserves. Talagi missed seven tackles against Parramatta and was repeatedly targeted around Penrith’s left edge. Cogger provides a steadier defensive presence and a more conventional kicking option alongside Cleary, although the change may reduce some attacking explosiveness.

The Panthers still possess an outstanding pack. Moses Leota, Lindsay Smith, Isaiah Papali’i, Liam Martin, Yeo, Scott Sorensen and Liam Henry give them elite work rate and defensive resilience. Brian To’o also continues to produce enormous yardage from the wing.

That quality is why Penrith remain favourites. The concern for spread backers is whether they are playing well enough to create meaningful separation. They trailed the Eels by 12, lost to the Titans recently and have looked more vulnerable around their edges than their reputation suggests.

A neutral regional venue also removes some of their traditional home ground advantage. Penrith will have strong support in Mudgee, but this is not the same as asking Canberra to win at a packed CommBank Stadium.

Raiders Run Riot Against Tigers

Canberra’s 56-10 demolition of the Tigers was their most complete attacking performance of the season. The Raiders ran in 10 tries and punished virtually every Tiger error, turning a competitive opening into a procession as their confidence grew.

The result extended Canberra’s winning run to three matches, during which they have scored 98 points. More importantly, the improvement has come through repeatable areas rather than isolated moments. Their forwards are winning contact, the spine is playing on the front foot and their outside backs are converting opportunities.

Kaeo Weekes has provided speed and support from fullback, while Ethan Strange and Ethan Sanders are developing into a balanced halves partnership. Strange is particularly dangerous when the Raiders generate ruck speed, as his direct running forces defenders to make early decisions. Sanders provides the kicking and organisation that allows Strange to attack more freely.

Canberra’s pack is capable of preventing Penrith from dominating physically. Tapine remains one of the competition’s premier props, Horsburgh brings aggression and Smithies gives them work rate through the middle. Papalii’s experience from the bench is valuable, while Zac Hosking and Ata Mariota give the Raiders mobile edge options.

Owen Pattie returns at hooker after suspension, moving Tom Starling back to the bench. That gives Ricky Stuart two different dummy half options and allows Canberra to increase the tempo once Penrith’s starting middles leave the field.

The obvious warning is the quality of last week’s opposition. Wests were dreadful, dealing with internal turmoil and offering extraordinarily little defensive resistance. Scoring 56 against the Tigers does not mean Canberra will open Penrith up with the same ease.

However, the performance still matters. Confidence is powerful at this stage of a season, and the Raiders arrive believing they can challenge anyone. They only need to remain within eight points for the primary bet to cash.

Panthers vs Raiders Recent History

The teams have already met once this season, with Penrith winning 30-18 at GIO Stadium in Round 10. The Panthers scored five tries and controlled the decisive periods, although Canberra remained competitive for long enough to suggest the gap was not enormous. They also met at this very venue in round 25 last season, with the Raiders getting the upset won, 20-16.

Recent results:
• 2026 Round 10: Panthers def Raiders 30-18
• 2025 Round 25: Raiders def Panthers 20-16
• 2024 Round 25: Raiders def Panthers 22-18
• 2023 Round 5: Panthers def Raiders 53-12
• 2022 Round 21: Panthers def Raiders 26-6

Take the Points With the Form Team

Penrith is the better team. They have Nathan Cleary, Isaah Yeo, an elite pack, and years of experience winning close games. If this matchup were priced around Panthers -5.5 or -6.5, I would probably leave it alone.

At Raiders +8.5, the number becomes attractive.

Canberra is playing with considerably more confidence than Penrith. Their attack is moving freely, their middle has been strong, and the young spine is improving each week. Penrith, meanwhile, have needed to grind through several uneven performances and remain without their first-choice fullback.

The Cogger selection should improve Penrith defensively, but it does not automatically fix the broader attacking concerns. Cleary has been forced to manufacture a sizeable portion of their points through kicking and individual class, while the Panthers have not consistently generated the relentless field position that once made them impossible to contain.

Canberra do not need to win for the bet to cash. They can lose 24-18 or 26-20 and still cover. Their forward pack is capable of keeping the ruck competitive, and Weekes, Savage and Timoko provide enough speed to punish Penrith if their edges continue to make poor defensive decisions.

The Raiders’ money line is obviously a more speculative play. Penrith remain outstanding at closing tight matches, and Canberra have not always managed late game pressure well. Still, the upset price should reflect that this is closer than a standard 1v11 matchup.

The regional venue is another subtle positive. Penrith lose some of the comfort and familiarity of their usual home environment, while Canberra have traditionally embraced physical matches away from Sydney’s major grounds.

My primary position is the points. The Panthers may win, but their current form does not justify laying more than a converted try against one of the hottest teams in the competition.

A small money line sprinkle also makes sense. If Canberra carry their recent confidence into Mudgee and avoid giving Cleary cheap field position, they are capable of turning this into the upset of the round.

Panthers vs Raiders Player Prop Bet

Brian To’o has certainly looked better since he was dropped from Origin, and with the Raiders’ weaker left edge defensively added to the Panthers going right more through Cleary, I like Bizza for a double this week.

B To’o (2+ tries)

$4.50

Panthers vs Raiders Same Game Multi

Leg 1: Raiders ML – We’re going large here, and I can smell another Mudgee upset here for the Panthers.

Leg 2 B To’o (1+ try) – See above best prop bet, just the one try here given the price is bumped up by the Raiders ML leg.

Leg 3: E Strange (1+ try) – Strange looked extremely dangerous last week, and he will be attacking the new look Panthers’ left edge defence this week. A great chance at a try.
