Sunday afternoon at 4 Pines Park presents a critical game for the finals hopes of both teams, but the two sides could hardly enter it on more different trajectories. Cronulla have surged into the top four after winning seven of their past eight, while Manly have dropped outside the eight following consecutive defeats and another injury to Tom Trbojevic.
The Sharks are now playing their most consistent football of the season. Their spine is settled, the forward pack is dominating, and the attack has found multiple avenues to points. Manly, meanwhile, appear to have hit the wall after losses to North Queensland and Gold Coast.
Team news only strengthens the Cronulla argument. Tom Trbojevic is out after suffering another hamstring injury, with Lehi Hopoate expected to take over at fullback. Ben Trbojevic returns, but Manly lose their most influential attacking player. Cronulla regain Jesse Ramien, Siosifa Talakai, Jesse Colquhoun and Niwhai Puru, while Jayden Berrell drops out.
The market has the Sharks around -3.5, and I am happy to lay the number. Brookvale remains a difficult venue, but current form, availability, and defensive reliability all favour Cronulla.

Sea Eagles Collapse Again on Gold Coast
Manly’s 38-32 loss to the Titans was another damaging blow to their finals campaign. The Sea Eagles scored enough points to win most matches but once again failed to control momentum or defend a lead, allowing Gold Coast to produce six tries and secure an upset.
Jason Saab scored twice, and Tolu Koula continued to provide attacking threat, but Manly’s defensive structure repeatedly broke down. Jojo Fifita and Oliver Pascoe both crossed for doubles, while Keano Kini and Jayden Campbell regularly created uncertainty through the middle and around the edges.
The more significant development was another hamstring injury for Tom Trbojevic. Turbo remains Manly’s most important player and the centre of their attacking structure. His absence removes their best support runner, strongest backfield organiser and the player most likely to turn half opportunities into tries.
Lehi Hopoate is a capable replacement and has shown he can manage fullback but moving him from the wing creates another reshuffle. The Sea Eagles retain speed through Saab and Koula, while Reuben Garrick and Jamal Fogarty provide experience, but the overall ceiling drops without Trbojevic.
Manly’s form over the past month is the greater concern. They were poor against Parramatta, surrendered a late lead against North Queensland and then conceded 38 to the Titans. Those are not isolated failures against elite opposition. They suggest a team whose defensive confidence and ability to close games have deteriorated.
Returning to 4 Pines should produce an improved effort. The venue remains a genuine advantage and the crowd will understand the importance of the match. However, emotion alone will not solve the defensive problems exposed over the past three weeks.
Sharks Win Again Without Reaching Top Gear
Cronulla continued their surge with another victory over Newcastle last weekend, reinforcing their position among the competition’s leading teams. The Sharks did not need to reproduce the historic 66-point demolition of the Dolphins, instead relying on field position, defensive resilience, and a settled attacking structure.
That is arguably more encouraging than another blowout. Cronulla have now shown they can win in multiple ways. Hynes and Trindall can open games up when the ruck speed is available, but they can also manage territory and trust their defence when opponents remain competitive.
The return of Jesse Ramien gives the Sharks another powerful yardage carrier and attacking option in the centres. Talakai provides additional versatility and physicality, while Colquhoun strengthens the forward rotation. Puru’s inclusion adds halves depth, although Hynes and Trindall remain the clear first choice pairing.
Cronulla’s middle should provide the decisive advantage. Addin Fonua-Blake, Thomas Hazelton, Cameron McInnes, Briton Nikora and Teig Wilton have consistently created enough momentum for Brailey to influence the ruck. Manly’s defence has struggled once opponents establish quick play the balls, and the Sharks are well equipped to target that weakness.
Their back five also match up well against Brookvale conditions. Kennedy, Katoa, Ramien, Iro and Mulitalo can generate strong yardage and prevent the Sea Eagles from consistently winning the territorial battle.
The Sharks have occasionally produced flat performances after strong runs, so complete trust is still dangerous. However, their form is based on more than confidence. The spine is settled, the pack is healthy, and their defensive systems are functioning at a significantly higher level than Manly’s.
Sea Eagles vs Sharks Recent History
These teams met twice last season, with Cronulla winning both matchups. They also met more recently in round 13 this season, with the home team Cronulla winning 28-22, despite a second half fightback from the Sea Eagles. It was the Sharks’ seventh win in the past eight games against the Sea Eagles, in a rivalry they have dominated of late.

Sharks to Keep Manly Sliding
Brookvale is the principal reason this is not a larger bet. Manly are almost always more dangerous at 4 Pines, and their season is approaching the point where desperation can produce a significant lift. If Fogarty controls territory and the Sea Eagles’ outside backs generate strong yardage, they can keep this close.
Every other major factor favours Cronulla.
The Sharks are healthier, in better form and considerably more reliable defensively. Manly have conceded 38 to the Titans, lost control late against the Cowboys and been beaten by Parramatta during their past three outings. Cronulla enter after another strong win and field close to their preferred side.
Turbo’s absence is the defining team list issue. Hopoate can provide energy from fullback, but he cannot replicate Trbojevic’s influence. Without Turbo, more pressure falls on Fogarty to create attacking shape and on Koula and Garrick to manufacture points from the edges.
Cronulla should be able to limit those opportunities by controlling the middle. Fonua-Blake and the Sharks pack can force Manly onto the back foot, allowing Hynes and Trindall to repeatedly kick into corners and challenge the Sea Eagles’ reshuffled back three.
The line of Sharks -3.5 remains manageable. We do not need Cronulla to dominate from the opening whistle or win by multiple scores. We need them to be the more professional side across 80 minutes, and all recent evidence supports that conclusion.
Manly may begin strongly. The crowd should generate energy, and the Sea Eagles possess enough strike to score early. The question is whether they can maintain their defensive intensity once Cronulla begin building pressure. Over the past month, the answer has repeatedly been no.
The Sharks have won four of the past five meetings and have dominated in several of those wins. They now arrive at Brookvale as the team moving toward September while the Sea Eagles appear to be falling away.
Cronulla’s form should continue, Manly’s slide should deepen, and the Sharks should cover the short spread.
