Friday Night at WIN Stadium continues NRL Round 22 with the Dragons hosting a Dolphins side returning from the bye at a crucial stage of the season. The market has this game priced almost exactly where I do across both the spread and total, leaving no obvious traditional handicap edge. Instead, I will take a small position on the Dolphins to win by 13 or more points.
This is comfortably my smallest play of the week. The Dolphins have been difficult to trust through the second half of recent seasons, while their performances without Isaiya Katoa have lacked the control and consistency we saw earlier in the year. However, the Dragons may have reached the high point of their brief revival when they beat the Tigers earlier this month. They were subsequently beaten in Auckland before being dismantled 38-18 by the Titans at Jubilee Stadium last weekend.
The Dolphins should be fresh after the bye and have named a powerful side featuring Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, Jamayne Isaako, Jack Bostock, Herbie Farnworth and Selwyn Cobbo across the backline. Katoa has been included among the reserves as he pushes to return from a fractured wrist, while Thomas Flegler, Jeremy Marshall-King, Max Plath, Tom Gilbert and Felise Kaufusi give the visitors plenty of strength through the middle.

Dragons Humbled After Brief Revival
The Dragons’ improved month came to a brutal end in last week’s 38-18 loss to the Titans. St George Illawarra entered the match as a narrow favourite after becoming more competitive under Dean Young, but Gold Coast repeatedly exposed them from long range and scored six tries in a convincing performance.
Jayden Campbell controlled the contest with a try and three try assists, while the Titans regularly found space once they moved beyond the Dragons’ initial defensive contact. St George Illawarra had shown better organisation in previous weeks, but their inability to defend speed and second phase football resurfaced against a Gold Coast team willing to attack from anywhere.
The loss was particularly disappointing because the Dragons were playing at Jubilee Stadium and had an opportunity to build on their recent progress. Instead, they again looked like a side that needs almost everything to go right to remain competitive. Their attack produced 18 points, but they never looked comfortable once the Titans established momentum.
Dean Young has retained the same basic spine, with Clint Gutherson at fullback, Daniel Atkinson and Kyle Flanagan in the halves and Damien Cook at hooker. Gutherson continues to provide leadership and effort, while Cook remains capable of lifting the speed around the ruck. The issue is that the Dragons still lack repeatable attacking threats once opponents contain their first movement.
Moses Suli has been listed among the reserves after dropping out of last week’s final side. His possible inclusion would add yardage and physicality, but the Dragons still appear outgunned by the Dolphins’ outside backs. Mat Feagai, Valentine Holmes, Setu Tu and Tyrell Sloan will face one of the competition’s most powerful backlines.
The young Dragons forwards have competed admirably, but this is a difficult assignment. Loko Pasifiki Tonga, Toby Couchman, Ryan Couchman and Dylan Egan must handle Flegler, Francis Molo, Kulikefu Finefeuiaki and a loaded Dolphins bench. If the Dragons lose that battle, the scoreboard could move quickly.
Dolphins Return Fresh for Finals Push
The bye arrived at an ideal time for the Dolphins after an emotionally turbulent fortnight. They were humiliated 66-0 by Cronulla before responding with a desperately needed win over North Queensland. That victory prevented their season from spiralling completely and allowed them to enter the break with their finals position intact.
The Dolphins now need to prove that the Cowboys result represented a genuine correction rather than a temporary emotional response. Their recent history tells us they have struggled to maintain momentum through the final third of seasons, and another collapse would raise serious questions about whether this group can handle finals pressure.
The team named this week is strong enough to win comfortably. Tabuai-Fidow returns to his preferred fullback role behind a backline packed with power and speed. Isaako provides reliable finishing and goal kicking, while Bostock, Farnworth and Cobbo can all dominate yardage sets. The Dragons will have enormous difficulty containing those players if the Dolphins begin sets with quick play the balls.
Katoa’s status remains the biggest selection story. He has been named in the reserves and could return if he proves his fitness. His inclusion would substantially improve the visitor’s organisation and make the 13+ bet more attractive. Bradley Schneider and Kodi Nikorima remain capable replacements, but neither has consistently provided Katoa’s balance between control and creativity.
The Dolphins should also benefit from their forward depth. Flegler and Molo start in the front row, with Plath, Gilbert and Kaufusi coming from the bench. That is a significant amount of representative quality power to introduce against a young Dragons pack.
Freshness matters at this point of the season. While the Dragons were chasing Campbell and the Titans around Jubilee Stadium last weekend, the Dolphins had an opportunity to reset physically and mentally. They should arrive in Wollongong with considerably more energy.
Dragons vs Dolphins Recent History
These clubs have met only five times since the Dolphins entered the competition, with the Dolphins holding a narrow 3-2 advantage. Their only meeting last season was one of the most one-sided results in the young rivalry, as the Dolphins destroyed the Dragons 56-6 at Suncorp Stadium.

These matches have historically been blowouts, and that’s what we will be hoping for again this week.
Dolphins Capable of Creating Separation
There is no major spread value here. The market is basically aligned with my ratings, and that is why this remains a small play rather than a position I want to build the week around.
The appeal of Dolphins 13+ comes from the likely game shape. If the Dolphins win, I think there is a reasonable chance they win comfortably. Their strengths directly target the areas Gold Coast exposed last week: speed through the middle, physical outside backs, and the ability to score from beyond the traditional attacking zone.
The Dragons can keep this close by completing at a high rate, controlling territory, and forcing the Dolphins to patiently work out of their own end. Gutherson, Flanagan and Cook are experienced enough to slow the game down, while the young forward pack has shown it can compete when possession is balanced.
The problem arrives if St George Illawarra fall behind. Their attack has not shown enough variety to confidently chase a two-score deficit. That allows opponents to become more aggressive defensively and creates further opportunities from errors and poor kicks.
The Dolphins have a stronger team almost everywhere. Hammer is the most dangerous player on the field, Farnworth and Cobbo offer enormous physical advantages and their forward rotation is deeper. Katoa returning would further widen the gap, but even if he remains out, Schneider and Nikorima should have enough time and field position to steer the side home.
The bye also removes one excuse. The visitors should not be physically flat or mentally underprepared. Their finals campaign is approaching the point where every poor performance carries consequences, and this is a match they need to control.
The Dolphins’ ceiling is considerably higher. They should win, and if the Dragons reproduce anything close to last week’s performance, it could become another ugly afternoon.
