Spring if officially here and we're hoping to kick it off with a few winners around the country today! We're heading to Newcastle and Benalla for three selections, which you can find in Tim Geers' preview below!
Horse Racing Tips: Tuesday, September 1st
Newcastle Race 1 (Market)
This is probably the race I’m most keen to bet in today. (6) Head On Up ran 2nd on debut at Hawkesbury, beaten less than a length, and finds a very winnable maiden today. The stable’s top provincial jockey goes on board and the Freedmans had a 24% strike rate here at Newcastle last season. With natural improvement I think she goes very close and I prefer her over the current favourite. (7) Lessing is the other horse I’ll be backing in the race at $6.00. She’s had three trials but the first two were back in February/March. Her recent one at Gosford was good, Avdulla goes straight on for her debut and Allan Denham is another trainer with a good record at Newcastle, with a 26% strike rate. Expecting a big run on debut and the $6.00 looks a good price. Backing those two to roll the current favourite.
Newcastle Race 2 (Market)
We have two horses at the top of the market here but there is one at longer odds we shouldn’t dismiss. I’m with (2) Front Money on top, who ran well behind subsequent city winner Escaped first up, and then was only a length off the winner at Warwick Farm last start. I think getting back onto good ground will be a big positive today. She won here at Newcastle on debut in his only start on firm ground. There looks no speed in the race so she should find the front from her wide gate and be very hard to run down. The value and the underestimated runner is (5) Hard Faith at $8.50. I tipped her first up at her first start for trainer Nathan Doyle. She won that race at Muswellbrook and although this is a much harder race, this stable can get them to keep improving. It’s their only runner of the day and I’ll be on at the odds.

Benalla Race 3 (Market)
One at big odds I’m interested in at Benalla today is (12) Sneaky Swan here for Russell Osbourne and Michael Poy. There’s a few of the big stables represented here so we’re getting a big price. I couldn’t find a jumpout for this filly but the signs are there for her to run well. This trainer has a 35% strike rate here at Benalla and out of all his runners today, this is the only one Michael Poy rides. Poy has two winners from four rides for the stable, and he comes to Benalla for just the one ride today. Drawn wide but at $26/$5.50 I have to have a little nibble.
