Sunday afternoon at Sharks Stadium gives us one of the best underdog spots of the round, with Cronulla hosting a Tigers side that the market still seems reluctant to fully respect. The Sharks are 5.5-point favourites, but I have this extremely close to a pick’em. That makes Tigers at massive plus money a bet I’m very happy to take.
Cronulla are dangerous, but they have been wildly inconsistent. Their attack can score quickly, yet their defence has been far too loose for a team being priced as a strong favourite. The Tigers, meanwhile, keep showing signs that their improvement is real, even if injuries and suspensions have complicated the picture. Round 9 team news has Sunia Turuva shifting to fullback for Wests, with Api Koroisau suspended and Jahream Bula sidelined, while Cronulla get Cameron McInnes starting and Briton Nikora named on the edge.
That injury news is why this is not a bigger bet, but the price is still too good. The Sharks are not playing like a team that should be this short against a Tigers side with genuine attacking punch.

Sharks vs Tigers Prediction & Tips: 2026 NRL Round 9
Sharks Still Too Volatile
Cronulla’s 46-34 loss to North Queensland was a brutal watch for anyone who wants to trust them as a defensive side. The Sharks conceded nine tries in Townsville and were forced into another shootout that highlighted both their attacking talent and their structural issues. Reports out of the game described it as a reality check, with Craig Fitzgibbon raising concerns about attitude and defensive commitment after the Sharks were dragged into an open, unstructured contest.
There were positives. Cronulla did not completely fold, they produced a second half surge, and players like Nicho Hynes and Addin Fonua-Blake continue to give them enough quality to trouble any side. Cameron McInnes’ return was also a positive, giving them another hard edge through the middle.
But the defensive profile is hard to ignore. Conceding 46 to the Cowboys one week and then being asked to lay 6.5 the next is not a spot I’m keen to support. Cronulla’s edge spacing has been inconsistent, and when teams get them moving laterally, they can look vulnerable very quickly.
That matters against the Tigers. They have more attacking shape than the market gives them credit for, and even without Koroisau and Bula, they still have enough power and speed to make Cronulla defend. If this becomes another open contest, the Sharks should not be this short.
Tigers Keep Proving They Belong
The Tigers’ recent form line is far more respectable than their reputation. The Tigers are coming off a 33-14 win over the Raiders, who looked like they had rediscovered their 2025 form of late. This win, to go with recent results also including a narrow 21-20 loss to Brisbane, a 42-22 win over Newcastle, and a 22-20 golden-point win over Parramatta, show the Tigers start to the season has been no fluke. That is a side competing every week and regularly putting itself in winning positions.
The Raiders result was particularly impressive. Wests were efficient, direct, and far more composed than the market often expects them to be. Their attack has multiple avenues: Terrell May and Fonua Pole provide middle punch, Samuela Fainu gives them edge physicality, and Turuva at fullback adds speed and support play even with Bula missing.
The Koroisau suspension hurts, no doubt. He is the side’s organiser and tempo setter out of dummy-half and losing him changes their ruck craft. But Tristan Hope gets the No.9 jersey, and there is still enough around him to keep the Tigers competitive. What I like most is that this side no longer feels like it needs chaos to win. They can build pressure, finish sets, and create points through structure.
That is why I’m not scared off by the losses to the Tigers’ spine. They matter, but they are already in the price. What I don’t think is priced correctly is how vulnerable Cronulla are right now.
Sharks vs Tigers Recent History
The most recent meeting last season was a Tigers win, with the home side sneaking home 20-18 at Leichhardt Oval in round 8 as a 6.5-point home underdog. An 89th minute Adam Doueihi penalty goal in Golden Point got the Tigers over the line, in their second straight win over the Sharks at Leichhardt Oval.
Recent results:
2025 Round 18: Tigers def Sharks 20-18
2024 Round 19: Sharks def Tigers 58-6
2024 Round 3: Tigers def Sharks 32-6
2023 Round 19: Sharks def Tigers 36-12
2022 Round 22: Sharks def Tigers 36-12
So as can be seen, last season’s Golden Point game was the exception to this rivalry of late, not the rule, however I expect another tight battle here.
Tigers Massive Price Is Too Good
This is a numbers play first and a form play second. The market has Cronulla -6.5. I have this very close to pick’em. That is a huge gap, and when the moneyline is offering massive plus money on the Tigers, I want to be involved.
The Sharks can absolutely win. They have the better spine, more proven attacking polish, and home ground advantage. But they are not defending well enough to be trusted as a strong favourite. If they get dragged into another open game, the Tigers are live.
Wests’ injury issues are real. No Koroisau and no Bula is not minor. But Turuva at fullback gives them speed, May and Pole give them enough middle presence, and their current form suggests they are playing with real belief. This is not a dead underdog hoping for luck; this is a side capable of taking the fight to Cronulla.
The total is harder to touch because both teams can contribute to a messy scoreboard, but the side is clear. I would not be surprised if the Tigers win outright, and at the current price, that is exactly where I want to be.
Cronulla’s reputation is still doing too much work in this market. The Tigers are closer than the number says, and plus money is the wrong price.

Sharks vs Tigers Player Prop Bet
Siosifa Talakai got a start in the centres last week, and promptly scored two tries in the opening 12 minutes. The Tigers’ left edge has struggled all season with constant changes, and I expect Talakai to get plenty of ball in the opposition redzone.
Siosifa Talakai (1+ try)

Sharks vs Tigers Same Game Multi
Leg 1: Tigers (+6.5) – See best bet, getting the converted try makes this an easy decision.
Leg 2: S Talakai (1+ try) – See best prop bet.
Leg 3: A Doueihi (1+ try) – Basically a backrower when he gets his hands on the ball close to the line, there’s not a more dangerous halfback in the league close to the line with ball in hand.
