EPL 2025-26: Matchday 5 Preview & Betting Tips
Liverpool vs Everton
Anfield, Saturday 20th September, 9:30pm AEST
The first Merseyside Derby of the 2025/26 season arrives with both Liverpool and Everton in promising form, setting the stage for a massive clash at Anfield. Liverpool have started the campaign in perfect fashion, winning all four of their games to sit top of the table with twelve points. Their balance of attacking depth and defensive quality has been evident, with Mohamed Salah and Hugo Ekitike leading the way in the final third, while Arne Slot has managed to integrate new faces without disrupting momentum.
The visitors come into the derby with two wins, a draw and a single defeat from their opening fixtures, leaving them in sixth place, well ahead of where most expected they’d be. The addition of Jack Grealish has breathed life into the Toffees attacking game, with four assists from four games to start the season. Everton will know the scale of the challenge at Anfield, where Liverpool have been incredibly tough to beat, but they also arrive with much greater optimism than they have in previous seasons.
Recent history heavily favours Liverpool, who have dominated this fixture over the last decade. Since 2016, Liverpool have a 10-7-2 in Premier League fixtures against Everton, and Anfield has been a terrible place for the Toffees to go, having only won one Premier League game at the venue this century. The Reds are absolutely humming at the moment, sitting as the highest scoring team in the league, and they will have no troubles against their crosstown rivals.

Manchester United vs Chelsea
Old Trafford, Sunday 21st September, 2:30am AEST
Manchester United will be desperate to get their season going when they host Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday morning. The Red Devils are in 14th place after their 3-0 loss in the Manchester Derby last week, with just four points from four games as the pressure continues to build on Ruben Amorim. Chelsea have had an up and down start to the season with two wins and two draws, but will be pleased to be sitting in 5th position given the struggles some of the better sides in the league have had so far.
Manchester United have conceded seven goals (4th most in the league) and have scored only 4 goals (ranked 15th the league). Their deficiencies at both ends of the pitch are a huge concern coming up against a Chelsea side that have scored an equal league best 9 goals, and have conceded only 3 goals (ranked 5th in the league). They’ve looked all at sea across the first month of the season and it’s clear Amorim cannot get his system in place, and the talent they have isn’t good enough either.
Joao Pedro ranks second in the league for assists (3) and fourth in the league for goals (2), in what has been a brilliant start to the season for the Brazilian. Chelsea’s spread of attacking contributors has been a big strength to start the season, with six different goal scorers and three players with multiple goals through the opening four games of the season. This game could get ugly with how Manchester United have played so far this season, and Chelsea’s attack will run riot at Old Trafford to lead them to a convincing victory.

Arsenal vs Manchester City
Emirates Stadium, Monday 22nd September, 1:30am AEST
Arsenal host Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium on Monday in a clash that will prove crucial in the make up of the top four come the end of the season. Arsenal have impressed so far this season, with three wins from four games to be sitting second on the table. Although it’s been a good start, their three wins have come against 14th, 15th and 16th on the table, and failed in their one game against a top four opponent. Manchester City ended a two game losing slide with a 3-0 victory over rivals Manchester United.
Pep Guardiola’s side got back to their best with a brilliant all round performance, while Erling Haaland continued his hot start to the season with a brace. Haaland has 5 goals from four games to lead the Golden Boot race, and looks back to the form that saw him win consecutive Golden Boots in his first two seasons at City. The Norwegian will need to be at his best on Monday, against an Arsenal side that has only conceded one goal through four games - the fewest in the league.
Manchester City have certainly had the better of this matchup over the last eight years, with 12 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses in Premier League matches against the Gunners since 2017. In the Mikel Arteta era the Gunners have not taken it up to the top teams in the league in games like this, they’ve tried to be conservative and be happy to take any points they can get. Their Matchday 3 loss against Liverpool was a prime example of this. With confidence high after last week, City can certainly keep this game close, and are more than capable of winning.
