Week 1 of the AFL Finals continues on Friday night as the Cats host the Lions in a monster qualifying final from the MCG. The winner locks in a home prelim and will likely be premiership favourites, so it’s all on the line.

Geelong vs Brisbane: 2025 AFL Qualifying Final

Soft Run, Strong Statement: Cats Storm into Finals Series

The Cats won their last six games of the season to lock up 2nd spot on the ladder and the ‘home’ final that comes with it. They did have a slightly soft end to the season, with all six of those wins coming against teams that finished outside the top eight, but their dominance was on full display, maintaining a 57.6 point winning margin across that stretch.

They played five games at the MCG throughout the course of the regular season, going 4-1 with impressive wins over Hawthorn and Collingwood included. After a successful season last year built predominantly on defence, the Cats flipped their style this year to an offensive brand, ranking No.1 over the season on offence on the back of strong years from Coleman Medalist Jeremy Cameron and a star studded cast of small forwards.

Lions Roar Back: Late Surge Secures Top-Four Finish

The Lions had stretches throughout the season where it seemed like their stranglehold over the league was waving, but they managed to bounce back from each form slump, and finished off the season winning seven of their last nine games. They were particularly good in their last two, beating finals teams in Fremantle and Hawthorn to lock up the top four position.

The Lions impressive season was highlighted by a league high five players making the 44 man All-Australian squad with Harris Andrews, Hugh McCluggage and Zac Bailey all getting the eventual nod in the team. The Lions have arguably the most dynamic range of mid/forwards in the comp, with McCluggage, Bailey and Cam Rayner all proving they are capable of winning games off their own boot, a commodity worth its weight in gold in big finals games.

Geelong Fresh, Brisbane Boosted Ahead of Qualifying Final Clash

The Cats relatively easy run to finish the season meant they were able to put in some valuable player management work, particularly for some of their aging stars to ensure premium health leading into the finals. They have only one player on the injury list in Toby Conway, but rumours of a niggle to ruckman Rhys Stanley have been surfacing over the last few days. Either way, the Cats are in prime shape at the moment.

The Lions will welcome back Lachie Neale (quad) and Jarrod Berry (shoulder) for Friday night’s qualifying final against Geelong, giving them a significant boost. The main selection question now is who makes way for the two regulars, with the only other consideration being whether two-game forward Ty Gallop retains his place while Eric Hipwood remains sidelined. Gallop featured in the final round against Hawthorn and looks to have done enough to hold his spot alongside Sam Day and Logan Morris.

Cats or Lions? Here’s our Geelong vs Brisbane Tip

I didn’t have a lot of second thoughts in tipping the Crows to get the job done on Thursday night but I’m having much more trouble with this one. I think these two teams are incredibly evenly matched and the bookies seem to agree, with the Cats opening as 6.5 point favourites here.

As I mentioned above, however, I do think the Lions possess a touch more class in the midfield and some more genuine matchwinners. The Lions have won their last three on the trot against Geelong, two this season in Round 1 & 16 and also that thrilling preliminary final last year at the MCG. I think they get the job done again on Friday night, but happy to take the 6.5 point headstart.

Geelong vs Brisbane Player Prop Bet

Our Best Player Prop: Charlie Cameron 2+ Goals

The star small forward has had an up and down season but has hit his straps in the last few weeks, booting three against the Eagles and two against the Swans in the last two wins. Kicked two in the preliminary final win over the Cats last year.

Geleong vs Brisbane Same Game Multi

Throughout the 2025 AFL season we’ll be putting together a fun same game multi for every match using Dabble.

Patrick Dangerfield Anytime Goalscorer - Has kicked three goals in his last three games against the Lions and six goals in his last five games. Big game performer, no doubts on this one.

Max Holmes 25+ Disposals - Has had a monster year, racking up 27.0 disposals per game and has cleared the 25 touch mark in five of his last six. 29 and 23 against the Lions this year.

Dayne Zorko 20+ Disposals - Saints skipper Jack Steele has been spending more time in the forward line over the last few weeks and I think the swap has come with Max Hall, who has been seeing more time in the midfield. Good value to get 15+ here.
