Knights vs Tigers Preview & Betting Tips: NRL Round 17 2026

June 27th 2026, 4:49pm, By: Ben Bridge

Knights vs Tigers Betting Tips

Sunday afternoon at McDonald Jones Stadium gives us a revenge spot with a total I’m happy to attack. The Knights host the Tigers after being beaten 42-22 by Wests in Campbelltown earlier this season, and Newcastle should be desperate to make amends in front of their home crowd. This time, the Knights are much healthier, with Kalyn Ponga back at fullback, Dylan Lucas returning, and their key attacking pieces far closer to full strength.

The Tigers also get attacking pieces back, with Adam Doueihi and Alex Twal returning, while Jock Madden is out after concussion. Wests won the first meeting comfortably, with Sunia Turuva scoring a hat-trick and Jahream Bula producing a standout display, so Newcastle will not need much reminding of what went wrong.

The total sits around 50.5, and I make this closer to 55.5. With the Knights back at home, Ponga returning, and the Tigers bringing Doueihi back into a side that can already score, I think points should flow.

Knights vs Tigers Prediction & Tips: 2026 NRL Round 17

Knights Get Ponga Back at Perfect Time

Newcastle’s 22-20 win over the Dragons last week was far too close for comfort, but it still gave them two competition points in a game they could easily have let slip. Fletcher Sharpe was excellent in a late switch to fullback, scoring two early tries and running for close to 200 metres, but the Knights again allowed an opponent back into the contest and were fortunate the Dragons missed key conversions and fumbled a late chance.

That is the concern with Newcastle. Even when they do good things, they rarely make life easy. Their defence can switch off, their game management can invite pressure, and they have a habit of turning comfortable positions into tense finishes.

But this week’s team news is hugely positive. Kalyn Ponga returning changes the entire attacking profile. He gives Newcastle genuine sweep threat, support play and ball playing class that they badly missed during their injury hit stretch. With Dane Gagai, Bradman Best, Dominic Young, Dylan Brown, Sandon Smith and Phoenix Crossland also in the side, the Knights have far more strike than they did a few weeks ago.

That is why the over appeals. Newcastle is not suddenly a defensive brick wall because Ponga returns. If anything, his return should lift their attacking confidence and allow them to play with more ambition. Against a Tigers side that can score but also concede, the Knights should be aiming to post 28-plus at home.

Tigers Still Dangerous With the Ball

The Tigers’ 36-22 loss to the Dolphins last week was another frustrating result because they had enough attacking moments to make the game interesting, but not enough discipline or defensive control to win. Jarome Luai finished with three try assists, Starford To’a scored a try, and the Tigers started well before injuries to Jock Madden and Patrick Herbert hurt their edge structure.

That has been the Tigers’ profile for much of the season. They can create points. Bula, Turuva, Luai, Doueihi, To’a and Skelton give them plenty of threats, and Api Koroisau’s ruck control makes them dangerous when they win quick play-the-balls. But defensively, they still give team’s chances. They conceded 36 last week and have had too many games where errors and poor possession control left them defending long sets.

The return of Doueihi helps the attack. He gives them a bigger body, another kicking option and more composure in good ball. Twal returning also helps the middle, and that matters after some rough defensive efforts. But neither inclusion makes this feel like an under game.

The Tigers’ best path is to attack. They already beat Newcastle 42-22 earlier this season by playing with speed and exposing defensive uncertainty. The Knights are stronger now, but Wests will know they can trouble them. If they score early, this could open up quickly.

Knights vs Tigers Recent History

These sides met earlier this season in Round 6, and the Tigers made a statement with a 42-22 win at Campbelltown. Sunia Turuva scored a hat-trick, Jahream Bula was electric, and Wests scored eight tries in a dominant attacking performance.

Recent results:
• 2026 Round 6: Tigers def Knights 42-22
• 2025 Round 6: Tigers def Knights 20-4
• 2025 Round 1: Knights def Tigers 10-8
• 2024 Round 23: Knights def Tigers 34-18
• 2024 Round 10: Knights def Tigers 20-14

The recent history supports volatility. These teams can grind, but they have also produced plenty of points when the game opens up.

Revenge Spot Points to Over

This is my favourite over angle of the round. The total has come down and is now 50.5, and I make it closer to 55.5. That is not a massive edge, but the matchup and team news both point toward points. I can only guess the total has come down due to the rain around the Hunter region this weekend.

Newcastle should be far more dangerous with Ponga back. His presence changes how the Tigers have to defend, especially on shifts to Best and Young. If the Tigers over compress around the ruck, Ponga can punish them out the back. If they slide early, Brown and Smith can play more direct. The Knights should have points in them.

The Tigers should too. Doueihi returning gives them another attacking option, Luai is coming off six try involvements in two games, and their outside backs have already shown they can hurt Newcastle. The first meeting finished 42-22, and while this Knights side is stronger, that result is still relevant. The road side know they can score against the Knights here.

The revenge angle also matters. Newcastle will want to make a statement after being embarrassed in Campbelltown, and at home on a Sunday afternoon, I don’t expect them to play conservatively. They should attack this game, and if they get on top early, the Tigers have enough strike to chase.

The risk is that Newcastle tries to control it through field position, but their defence has not been reliable enough to make that my main expectation. Both teams are more convincing with the ball than without it.

I’ll take the over and back this to clear 50.5.

Knights vs Tigers Player Prop Bet

With Kai Pearce-Paul out for the season, the Tigers’ right edge has suffered defensively. And that is deeply concerning against this Knights’ left edge attack. Lucas has six tries in five games, and the price here is hard to ignore.
