Sunday afternoon at GIO Stadium gives us one of the most intriguing price disagreements of Round 23, as Canberra host Newcastle in a match the market has struggled to separate. The Raiders are narrow favourites, but I have the wrong team on top and will back the Knights money line at $2.05.
Newcastle enters after an emphatic 30-6 win over Brisbane, while Canberra was comprehensively beaten 42-18 by Penrith in Mudgee. The Raiders’ previous good form deserves respect, but Newcastle currently possesses the more reliable spine, the stronger recent defensive performance and the greater attacking ceiling.
Money has already arrived for the Knights after they opened at a larger outsider price, and I agree with the move. Newcastle have Kalyn Ponga, Fletcher Sharpe, Bradman Best, Dane Gagai and Dominic Young available, while Tyson Frizell reaches another important career milestone.
Canberra regain Simi Sasagi after injury, but Sebastian Kris is out, and their young halves must recover quickly from a difficult evening against Penrith.
The venue keeps this close. GIO Stadium remains a significant advantage for Canberra, and the Raiders’ middle can make life difficult for any opponent. But at plus money, Newcastle are the side I want.
Raiders vs Knights Prediction & Tips: 2026 NRL Round 23
Raiders Brought Back to Earth by Penrith
Canberra entered the Mudgee clash chasing a fifth consecutive win and carrying genuine momentum after a strong month. Penrith brutally halted that run, scoring 42 points and effectively deciding the game through a dominant opening half.
The Raiders had been playing with confidence through Kaeo Weekes, Ethan Strange and Ethan Sanders, but Penrith prevented the young spine from establishing field position. Canberra’s forwards were forced to work out of their own end, and the defensive line struggled once Nathan Cleary and Isaah Yeo began creating repeated movement.
The loss should not erase the previous improvement. Canberra’s attack had become considerably more dangerous, with Weekes providing speed from fullback and Strange becoming increasingly comfortable running directly at defensive lines. Sanders gives the side an organising half and a strong long kicking option.
The pack remains Canberra’s greatest strength. Joseph Tapine, Corey Horsburgh, Morgan Smithies, Zac Hosking, Ata Mariota, and Josh Papali’i provide power, work rate and experience. If those players win the middle, Canberra can place Newcastle under substantial pressure.
Simi Sasagi’s return strengthens the centres after he missed the Penrith match, while Joe Roddy returns to the bench. Sebastian Kris is unavailable, forcing another adjustment to the outside backs.
The Raiders’ challenge is avoiding the defensive collapses that have appeared too frequently this season. They have conceded 512 points and average approximately 25.5 points against per game, which places enormous pressure on a young spine to keep producing.
Knights Make Finals Statement at Suncorp
Newcastle’s 30-6 victory over Brisbane was among their most complete performances of the season. The Knights scored five tries, held the Broncos to a single score and effectively ended Brisbane’s already faint finals hopes.
Fletcher Sharpe and Greg Marzhew both scored doubles, while Kalyn Ponga controlled the backfield and repeatedly created attacking opportunities. The result strengthened Newcastle’s position inside the top eight and gave them confidence before another difficult road trip.
The Knights’ spine is the primary reason I rate them above Canberra. Ponga remains the most influential player in the matchup, Sandon Smith gives Newcastle a genuine organising half and Sharpe provides another creative option close to the line.
Bradman Best and Dane Gagai give the Knights power and experience in the centres, while Dominic Young and Marzhew provide elite finishing and yardage from the wings. Canberra’s reshuffled edges will be tested throughout.
Tyson Frizell’s 300th game milestone adds another emotional angle. Newcastle should be motivated to produce a strong performance for one of their most respected senior forwards, particularly with finals positioning still at stake.
Newcastle’s weakness has been defensive consistency. The Knights have conceded approximately 23 points per game and have occasionally relied on their attack to rescue poor periods. Against Canberra at GIO Stadium, they must be willing to absorb sustained pressure rather than trying to turn every set into points.
The Brisbane result suggested they are capable of that balance. Newcastle defended with patience, controlled territory, and allowed their attacking talent to create separation naturally.
Raiders vs Knights Recent History
These teams met earlier this season, with Newcastle producing a dominant 32-12 win at McDonald Jones Stadium. Canberra controlled both meetings last year, winning 44-18 at home and 22-18 in Newcastle.

Wrong Team Favoured at GIO Stadium
This is a close matchup, but I cannot make Canberra favourites.
The Raiders deserve respect at home, and their forward pack is capable of controlling the game. If Tapine, Horsburgh and Smithies establish dominance, Strange and Sanders will receive enough time to pressure Newcastle’s defensive edges.
However, the Knights possess the best player on the field and the more dangerous backline. Ponga’s involvement should force Canberra to compress around the middle, creating opportunities for Best, Gagai, Young and Marzhew.
Newcastle’s performance against Brisbane also showed a level of defensive discipline that has not always been present. Holding any NRL team to six points is significant and doing it at Suncorp Stadium suggests the Knights are entering the run home with genuine focus.
The market has moved toward Newcastle, but the money line remains available at plus money. At $2.05, I am happy to back the side I rate as the narrow favourite.
The Raiders’ previous winning streak was encouraging, but the opposition and game circumstances need to be considered. Penrith exposed the gap between Canberra and the competition’s elite, while Newcastle arrives with significantly more attacking quality than several teams the Raiders beat during their run.
This should remain close. GIO Stadium should lift Canberra, and a low margin finish would not surprise. But Newcastle has more ways to win.
They can control the game through Smith’s kicking, attack through Ponga or create points on either edge. Canberra remains more dependent on their forwards providing a dominant platform.
The earlier 32-12 result also matters. Newcastle have already demonstrated that their speed and attacking shape can trouble the Raiders. Canberra will be better prepared this time, but the underlying matchup remains favourable to the Knights.
I agree with the early market move. Newcastle should not be outsiders, and the plus money price is worth taking before any further shortening. Keep in mind, the weather is expected to be rough, so take a look at the unders too.
