Felix Auger Aliassime vs Daniel Altmaier
(Approx. Wednesday 12am AEST)
I gave Felix Auger-Aliassime the benefit of the doubt when it came to his level on the clay in 2025. After a strong finish to the 2025 season on the indoor circuit, the Canadian had a chance to push his ranking even higher. He now sits at number 6 in the world, but he is nowhere near the 6th best player in the world on clay. It isn't even close. A glance over the clay season sees a loss to Kovacevic as a heavy favourite last week, a loss to Navone in straight sets, Blockx in straight sets, and Sinner in straight sets, with wins over Kopriva and Gaubas. Even the Monte Carlo quarter final run doesn't hold much weight, as he beat Cilic and then Casper Ruud injured himself.
There is another question mark around Auger-Aliassime, and that is his body and endurance this year. He cramped heavily in his loss to Borges at the Australian Open, in conditions that were not scorching, and at a point where he was nowhere near the end of the match. He then cramped at the end of the second set in his loss to Navone in two tiebreaks sets. It is a troubling trend when you consider the weather conditions in Paris today, as well as the opponent.
Daniel Altmaier has taken on the mantle of Roland Garros giant killer in the past. At Roland Garros alone, Altmaier has notched wins over Jannik Sinner, Taylor Fritz, and Matteo Berrettini, all while they were top 10 players in their own right. He is a physical opponent for the longer format and the warm conditions, and also isn't playing too badly at all himself. The decision to drop back to Challenger level in late March, reaching the final in Naples, seems to have helped the confidence. Since then he has wins over Prizmic, Cilic, Zhang and Shelton amongst others, and has held his own against a couple of big names. The comeback win vs Prizmic was notable, as he was a double break down in the deciding set, but hung around and asked questions of his opponent.
Sometimes, players like Altmaier are the hardest to knock off. I think the German is a big price. If he can push Auger-Aliassime early and keep things level, there will be doubts in the back of the mind of the Canadian. Look for Altmaier to notch another Top 10 win at Roland Garros.
