Melbourne vs St Kilda Prediction & Betting Tips: AFL 2026 Round 1
A New Demon Era Begins
Melbourne begin 2026 under new leadership after premiership coach Simon Goodwin departed following a disappointing 2025 campaign that saw the Demons finish 14th with a 7–16 record. The club has undergone significant change during the off-season, with the departures of Christian Petracca, Clayton Oliver and Steven May leaving major holes in the midfield and defensive structure.
The Demons will lean heavily on a younger core to carry the load early in the season. Kysaiah “Kozzy” Pickett is expected to feature prominently through the midfield and forward line, while emerging talents Harvey Langford and Caleb Windsor will be asked to step up through the centre. Up forward, recruit Brody Mihocek provides a reliable marking target and young forward Jacob van Rooyen continues to develop into an important focal point. While Melbourne’s energy and forward pressure showed encouraging signs during the pre-season, their ability to compete against more settled sides remains a key question.
Saints Ready to Respond?
St Kilda will be keen to bounce back quickly after their 12-point Opening Round loss to Collingwood, a game in which they actually controlled large portions of the contest. The Saints dominated inside 50 entries 63–40 but were unable to convert their opportunities as efficiently as the Magpies. Jack Sinclair led the way with 35 disposals while Cooper Sharman and Mitch Owens each booted two goals in a performance that still showcased St Kilda’s growing midfield strength.
The Saints also unveiled their off-season recruits against Collingwood, with Liam Ryan, Jack Silvagni, Tom De Koning and Sam Flanders all making meaningful contributions. Their midfield depth looks particularly impressive, with Sinclair, Flanders and Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera capable of generating quick ball movement from defence and through the middle of the ground. If St Kilda can control possession and transition the ball efficiently, they have the attacking weapons to trouble Melbourne’s evolving defensive structure.
What to Expect? Here’s Our Best Bet
Recent history between these sides has strongly favoured the Saints and the overall trajectory of the two clubs suggests that trend could continue. St Kilda won both meetings between the sides in 2025, including a remarkable comeback victory in Round 20 where Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera starred with 34 disposals and four goals. Their midfield depth and improved ball movement appear well suited to exploit Melbourne’s reshaped lineup.
Melbourne’s younger midfield group should bring plenty of energy and pressure around stoppages, but the Saints’ experience and cohesion across half-back and through the midfield may ultimately prove decisive. If Sinclair, Flanders and Wanganeen-Milera are able to control possession and supply their forwards consistently, St Kilda should generate enough scoring opportunities to secure the four points.

Melbourne vs St Kilda Prop Bet
Cooper Sharman shapes as one of St Kilda’s most dangerous scoring threats in this matchup. The versatile forward continues to improve his ability to find space inside 50 and convert opportunities, and with the Saints likely to generate strong forward supply again after registering 63 inside 50s in Opening Round, Sharman should see plenty of chances to impact the scoreboard.
Melbourne vs St Kilda Same Game Multi
Jacob van Rooyen 1+ Goal | Hugo Garcia 15+ Disposals | Darcy Wilson 15+ Disposals
This multi focuses on players whose roles consistently put them around the ball or in scoring positions. Jacob van Rooyen has become a reliable forward target for Melbourne and has kicked at least one goal in his last four consecutive matches, making him a strong chance to extend that streak. Through the midfield, Hugo Garcia continues to build consistency with 15+ disposals in four of his past five games, while Darcy Wilson has been finding plenty of the ball recently with 23 and 21 disposals in his last two matches.
