Match Preview
Australia will go into the match with a similar squad to their recent series but will be without Mitch Marsh who is out with an ankle injury. It does leave a hole in their batting that is yet to find an optimal and settled lineup. Aaron Finch continues to struggle at the top of the order, as questions remain around his captaincy ahead of the 2023 World Cup, and the experiment of Alex Carey at number four is still before the jury. Meanwhile Glenn Maxwell and Cameron Green in the lower half of the order does provide depth, but ODIs are won with the top order batting for the majority of the innings. Perhaps Marnus Labuschange will be reconsidered? David Warner played a lone hand in the 3rd ODI against Zimbabwe with a crisp 94, but there will need to be more support if they are to hold off a determined New Zealand bowling lineup.
Veteran Trent Boult spearheads the New Zealand lineup, many who have toured Australia before on multiple occasions. Martin Guptill, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Trent Boult, Jimmy Neesham, Mitchell Santner, Kane Williamson and Tim Southee are all familiar with Australian conditions. Lockie Ferguson bolsters the Black Caps attack, while Boult adds variety with his left arm swing bowling. Santner can play the tie down role or the aggressive role when he comes on to bowl depending on the situation. It's a well balanced bowling lineup. The Kiwis tuned up for this series with a 2-1 ODI series win at home against the West Indies, so they should be ready to go here.
The key to the match may be how well the Kiwis batsmen can get on top of the Australian bowling. With Pat Cummins being rested from the series, Australia are looking to Mitch Starc, Josh Hazelwood and Adam Zampa to lead Australia's bowling attack, while Cameron Green looks set to step up with some impressive returns against Zimbabwe. If they can deliver the good against the Kiwi batsmen, then Australia can get the job done, but if they post a big score it might be hard to trust Australia's batting at the moment. Both previous ODIs in Cairns were low-scoring affairs, so we'll back the Aussies to adjust best to the conditions for the opening contest of the series.
Apart from David Warner, all of the Australian batsmen failed in the third match and I have looked for bets where those that failed may bounce back in this match. Aaron Finch is under increasing pressure, and is susceptible against the new ball, especially in trying humid conditions, so we may leave him alone. Glenn Maxwell had a pretty good series against Zimbabwe but the question with him is if he even bats before the 40 over mark, so I have left him alone too. One I have gone with is Alex Carey. Carey wants to bat in the middle order and will need to make runs for that to continue to happen. I am tipping he will bounce back.

Playing at Cairns is not your typical Australian pitch, so not knowing if the pitch will have high bounce or not, I am trusting Tim Southee to adjust to the conditions pretty quickly with his right arm fast-medium bowling. Southee performs well on all pitches and is smart enough to work out the lines and lengths pretty early.
I think Southee is value to take the most wickets for New Zealand in this match.
