Round 16 brings us another three-game slate this Saturday. We kick things off at Marvel Stadium from 1:15pm where the Blues will be looking to continue their hot form against the Eagles. We then cross town to the MCG where the Magpies will need a win against the Tigers to stay in touch with the top ten. Finally, the match of the day is in Adelaide where the Crows and Power will tear shreds off each other in Showdown 60.
There’s plenty of good avenues to tackle this slate from a fantasy perspective with each game offering potential options. Let’s dive into it!

AFL Fantasy Round 16 Saturday: Where to Attack?
Some interesting angles on this slate with a variety of ways to attack which might see some very different combinations of players up the Draftstars leaderboard.
First up, the Blues and Eagles have near identical fantasy profiles. Over the last ten matches, both teams have given away plenty of points to general defenders and outside wings/defenders. The Eagles in particular are the worst in the league to general defenders. This would be a good area to target for either team, or perhaps even both and hope that the ball pings back and forth between the defensive half. At the same time, both teams are very restrictive to the designated kicker position.
Both teams are weak in the ruck so that’s another area to think about targeting. In the forward half, both teams are closer to the average so there’s no real trends to exploit there.
It’s no surprise that Richmond give up above average fantasy points in nearly every position as one of the worst teams in the comp. Forwards of all types as well as inside midfielders have been having a field day against the Tigers, so target the Pies in those positions. Richmond also give up some of the league’s highest points to general defenders and the designated kicker.
Collingwood’s biggest weakness this season has been in the ruck where they easily concede the most points in the league to that position. We highlighted that in last week’s article and saw Jordan Sweet post a very respectable score of 98 against the Pies. Toby Nankervis is back for the Tigers and he shook off some rust last week so maybe this is his week to shine if you trust his body to stand up. The designated kicker is another good position to target against the Pies.
The Crows remain one of the toughest oppositions to score fantasy points against. They are below average in nearly all positions, and particularly tough against general forwards or wings and outside defenders.
The Power also don’t give away much, despite their low standing on the AFL ladder. The only real weakness is against key forwards and a big injury to Esava Ratugolea last week will only make things even tougher for their backline against the big Crows forwards.
Game Script: Blues/Eagles wings/outside defenders/rucks, Tigers ruck, Pies stacks, Adelaide key forwards
AFL Fantasy Round 16 Saturday: Our Value Fantasy Picks
Honestly, there’s a lot of poor players on this slate. It’s hard to be too confident about recommending anyone under around the $10k mark. If you can find someone in this price range to hit value, then it could go a long way to helping you win this slate.
Kye Annand ($6,370) was the #2 draft pick for Richmond in the mid-season draft and he’s hit the ground running as an intercept defender. His VFL stats are modest at best but he’s pumped out fantasy scores of 58 and 52 in his first two games in yellow and black, and that’s fine at near minimum price. Collingwood isn’t a bad match up so hopefully he can continue that form.
AFL Fantasy Round 16 Saturday: Our Mid-Priced Fantasy Picks
Lachie Schultz ($11,000) is in play in a great matchup for Pies forwards against Richmond. It’s hard to find too many Pies forwards who are reliable, but Schultz is one who brings consistency along with a decent ceiling if he gets off the chain. His season average is 76 which is solid, but that includes a ceiling of 112 from earlier in the season against the Saints. Has multiple ways to score with marks, tackles and goals, so looks a good pick for a big day out against the Tigers.
Blake Acres ($12,460) has returned to the Blues team at the right time with some good form that has helped his team continue their winning run. He was out of favour earlier in the season but back-to-back scores of 100 have been very solid the last few weeks. If you watch Acres closely, his running power is elite and he is always looking to link up at every opportunity. I love that hunger and am happy to have him on my side in an excellent match up for wings against the Eagles.
AFL Fantasy Round 16 Saturday: Our Premium Fantasy Picks
Jayden Short ($14,150) has had a decent season in a struggling Tigers side with a 96.2 average and a high of 122 four weeks ago. He’s in play this week against the Pies who concede above average points to the designated kicker position. Short loves that role as the key distributor in the back line, so I expect him to be busy on Saturday afternoon.
Jordan De Goey ($14,830) has jumped in price over the last couple of weeks, but if you’re looking for a Collingwood premium, and don’t want to pay up for Nick Daicos, then De Goey is a strong choice. His last 6 weeks have been excellent, with scores of 118, 86, 112, 127, 91 and 116 in that tim. He looks fit and seems to have found the right groove between the midfield and forward line. Gets the gun matchup against the Tigers here, so as long as he is fit and the Pies don’t feel the need to rest up late, then I like JDG to go big once again.
AFL Fantasy Round 16 Saturday: Our Fades
Nick Daicos ($18,610) is at an astronomical price and, for me, I just can’t have him. $18k+ is too expensive for my liking, especially when I can’t find too many good value picks for the budget relief. His form has been excellent with a 121.8 average this season and a huge 148 last week. I’m sure he’d love to feast on a Richmond carcass, especially with Brownlow votes up for grabs, but there’s also a chance he might be rested on the pine late if the Pies are well in front. It’s a fade for me.
