Race 5: PRIVATE LIFE @ COOLMORE HANDICAP (1200 METRES) – 1:35pm (AEST)
(5) Spywire is a three-year-old gelding hailing from the Ciaron Maher stable. He is struggling to break through for a win after starting his career with two from his first three starts. Since then, Spywire has been third in the 2024 Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) won by Storm Boy, followed by another two minor placings from six attempts. The latest was a narrow second behind King’s Secret in a Benchmark 72 Handicap (1100m). Spywire can land in the first three here and the 2kg claim from jockey Anna Roper helps.
(10) Axius is the stablemate to my top pick and comes off a last start victory in a Benchmark 72 Handicap (1100m) at Randwick-Kensington. Looks to get a lovely run from barrier three with Dylan Gibbons picking up the ride. The son of Justify is the most inexperienced in the field with just four starts beside his name but he looks a strong contender.
(2) Flying Destiny couldn’t quite get the major prize at his previous start when Lady Extreme just got the better of him. From barrier two (at the time of writing) he should punch through early and could look to take a trail. He has been placed three from four when racing at the track and has each-way claims.
(5) Spywire WIN
$3.15 (2 units)
Race 8: SCHWEPPES SPRINT (1100 METRES) – 3:25pm (AEST)
(8) Storm The Ramparts has been a model of consistency throughout his career with 17 starts producing five wins, five seconds and four thirds. This prep, the son of Headwater has won three times and been runner up at the other two outings. He jumps up in grade but appears ready to tackle the higher level. With just 54kg, Storm The Ramparts will look to jump and run from barrier five, but there is a good deal of early speed outside him. Jockey Reece Jones picks up the ride and will be looking to end a run of outs that dates back to Bathurst on June 19.
(12) South Of India finished fourth at his return to racing in the Listed Bob Charley AO Stakes (1100m) and has won twice from three tries when second up from a spell. The wide gate means Anna Roper must press forward to find a prominent position. South Of India has had a freshen up since that first up run, and a barrier trial should have helped the gelding tick over nicely in preparation for this event.
(10) Romeo’s Choice saluted the judge when resuming at Warwick Farm on a Heavy 10. The Richard Litt-trained five-year-old gelding won’t be worried about a firmer track in comparison this time around and from barrier four should be looking for a soft run as they go hard up front. He could be the beneficiary if they overdo it finding their early positions. Worth a small bet at the price.
Also Backing: (10) Romeo’s Choice WIN $11.00 (0.5 units)
(8) Storm The Ramparts WIN
$6.00 (1 unit)
Race 9: ASAHI SUPER DRY WINTER CHALLENGE (1500 METRES) – 4:05pm (AEST)
(1) Robusto will carry the topweight of 60kg in the Listed event and the class horse of the race finished second behind Estadio Mestalla last time, and the pair will clash here once again. The Bjorn Baker-trained five-year-old gelding gets a 3kg swing on that horse. Not only that, Robusto was held up at a crucial stage in the home straight in the Listed Winter Stakes (1400m) and should get a nice run in transit from barrier four. The $2 million The Ingham (1600m) winner looks cherry ripe third up from a spell.
(10) Thunderlips is the stablemate to Robusto, and the four-year-old gelding has won three times this campaign from six starts and comes out of the Winter Stakes, when fourth, beaten 1.88 lengths. Prior to that, Thunderlips was victorious in a Benchmark 88 Handicap (1500m). Looms as a strong contender.
(4) Accredited also comes out of the Winter Stakes and was third on that occasion. Prepared by Joe Pride, the five-year-old gelding tried hard behind his stablemate Estadio Mestalla who faces a tougher task from the outside barrier with 57.5kg. Accredited looks the better of Pride’s chances in the race and should acquit himself well.
(1) Robusto WIN
$3.70 (2 units)
