Saturday evening at CommBank Stadium brings together a Cowboys side clinging to a finals position and a Parramatta team with nothing to lose. North Queensland absolutely needs the two competition points and should win this game, but Cowboys -6.5 asks them to win by more than I am comfortable laying given the matchup history and their inconsistent recent form.
My fair spread is closer to Cowboys -3.5, making Eels +6.5 the play. It is only a small position because Parramatta have been impossible to trust all season, but they have repeatedly troubled North Queensland and have won five of the past six meetings between the sides. The Cowboys have also won just once in five visits to CommBank Stadium.
Parramatta lose Isaiah Iongi for the season after the fullback suffered MCL and PCL damage against South Sydney. Apa Twidle takes over at No.1, Dylan Walker returns on the bench and Junior Paulo starts in the front row. North Queensland name Scott Drinkwater at fullback, Jake Clifford and Jaxon Purdue in the halves and a powerful forward pack featuring Jason Taumalolo, Reuben Cotter, Griffin Neame and Reed Mahoney.

Eels vs Cowboys Prediction & Tips: 2026 NRL Round 24
Eels Show Fight After Horror First Half
Parramatta’s 28-24 loss to South Sydney was about as strange a performance as you will see. The Eels were dreadful for 40 minutes, trailing 28-0 at halftime after being completely overwhelmed by South Sydney’s attack. Brian Kelly spent time in the sin bin, Parramatta missed 29 tackles in the opening half and looked capable of conceding 50.
Then they nearly produced the biggest comeback in premiership history.
Parramatta scored 24 unanswered points after halftime and gave themselves a genuine opportunity to steal the game. Jordan Samrani’s acrobatic try reduced the margin to four with 13 minutes remaining, and the Eels suddenly looked like the side playing with greater energy and confidence. They eventually ran out of time, but the response at least showed this team has not completely checked out.
The cost was Iongi’s knee injury, which has ended his season. That removes one of Parramatta’s better attacking players from the backfield, with young Apa Twidle now asked to take over. Mitchell Moses remains the key to everything. If he can control field position and keep the Cowboys starting sets deep, Parramatta can make this ugly enough to stay inside the number.
The forward pack also looks competitive. Paulo starts alongside Luca Moretti, Jack de Belin provides experience at lock and Dylan Walker returns through the interchange.
This is still a bottom 4 team, but their best performances have generally come when opposition sides expect an easy afternoon. North Queensland cannot afford to treat them as one.
Cowboys Produce Massive Defensive Response
North Queensland’s 30-8 win over the Titans was exactly the response Todd Payten needed after the Cowboys had conceded 82 points to the Roosters one week earlier. Rather than trying to immediately repair their points differential through reckless attack, the Cowboys based the win on defence and repeatedly turned Gold Coast away despite the Titans receiving opportunities.
That response deserves enormous credit. North Queensland remains inside the eight and, importantly, their run home is favourable. Their remaining opponents sit below them on the ladder, meaning there are no excuses if they do not qualify for September.
The Cowboys still have some unusual selection features. Jaxon Purdue remains at halfback alongside Jake Clifford, while Scott Drinkwater is the primary attacking threat from fullback. Without Tom Dearden, they lack some of the direct running and composure that normally makes their spine dangerous.
Through the middle, however, they should have an advantage. Taumalolo and Griffin Neame start at prop, Mahoney gives them aggression and service at hooker, while Cotter plays lock. Thomas Mikaele, John Bateman and Coen Hess give them experienced bench options.
North Queensland should win this game if they defend with anything close to last week’s intensity. The concern for a spread bet is whether their attack is polished enough to create separation against a Parramatta side that has repeatedly caused them problems.
Eels vs Cowboys Recent History
Parramatta have been a nightmare matchup for North Queensland, winning five of the past six encounters. The sides already met in Townsville this season, where the Eels produced a 33-30 golden point upset, and Parramatta also won 19-18 at CommBank Stadium last year through a late Mitchell Moses field goal.
Recent results:
• 2026 Round 10: Eels def Cowboys 33-30
• 2025 Round 23: Eels def Cowboys 19-18
• 2024 Round 6: Eels def Cowboys 27-20
• 2023 Round 21: Cowboys def Eels 24-16

Cowboys Likely to Win, But Eels Stay Close
This is a classic situation where I can separate the likely winner from the best bet. I think North Queensland more than likely win. They have far more to play for, they are coming off a confidence restoring victory and their forward pack should control enough of the match to generate the better opportunities. But Cowboys -6.5 is simply too big for me.
My fair sits closer to -3.5, and Parramatta’s recent history against North Queensland suggests there is something about this matchup that consistently keeps the Eels competitive. Five wins in six meetings is not random noise, particularly when the most recent three victories have come by three, one and seven points.
CommBank also matters. North Queensland have won only one of five games there, while Parramatta have enough familiarity with the venue to remain dangerous even during a poor season.
The Eels’ biggest challenge is recovering from the loss of Iongi. Twidle will be targeted heavily, and Drinkwater will look to create pressure through the kicking game. But Moses gives Parramatta an experienced halfback who can reduce that pressure by kicking them out of trouble.
If the Eels can avoid the catastrophic opening they produced against South Sydney, they should remain attached. Their second half response last weekend showed there is still effort in the group, and there is no scoreboard pressure associated with making finals.
North Queensland, conversely, have everything to lose. That can create a conservative game if they establish a lead. At 20-12 or 22-14, the Cowboys may become far more interested in protecting the two points than continuing to chase margin.
I expect North Queensland to get the job done, probably somewhere around 24-20 or 26-20. That makes the points the obvious betting side.

Eels vs Cowboys Player Prop Bet
Addo-Carr hasn’t scored for months, with his last try coming against the Cowboys all the way back in round 10 at the start of May. No one is more due for a try.

Leg 1: Eels (+6.5) – See above best bet.
Leg 2 J Addo-Carr (1+ try) – See above best prop bet.
Leg 3: M Taulagi (1+ try) – Taulagi is also in a drought, however against a weak Eels’ right edge defence, I expect the Queensland winger to break the drought just like JAC.
