Dolphins vs Cowboys Preview & Betting Tips: NRL Round 20 2026

July 18th 2026, 1:21am, By: Ben Bridge

Dolphins vs Cowboys Betting Tips

Sunday afternoon at Suncorp Stadium has suddenly become one of the defining matches of their season. The Dolphins were humiliated 66-0 by Cronulla last weekend, the first time the club has been held scoreless, and they now face a Cowboys team coming off an emotional golden point win over Manly. The Dolphins remain seventh, but their earlier momentum has disappeared, and another defeat would leave their finals position under enormous pressure.

This is the line in the sand game. Are the Dolphins going to repeat the late season collapses that have defined their previous campaigns, or can they absorb the embarrassment and produce the response of a genuine finals team?

I am backing the response, but only for a small outlay. Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, Jack Bostock and Selwyn Cobbo return to rebuild the backline, while Max Plath has been named despite an ankle issue. North Queensland may regain Tom Dearden from syndesmosis surgery, although he remains among the reserves and must complete the week’s training. The Cowboys lose Tom Mikaele to concussion protocols and John Bateman to a hamstring complaint.

Dolphins vs Cowboys Prediction & Tips: 2026 NRL Round 20

Dolphins Face Defining Response

The 66-0 loss to the Sharks was not merely a poor performance; it was the worst defeat in the Dolphins’ brief history. Cronulla ran in 11 tries; Nicho Hynes scored a club record 30 points and the Dolphins were comprehensively beaten in every meaningful area. Their defence lost shape, their attack generated almost nothing, and the contest was effectively over by halftime, as the Sharks led 24-0.

There is no tactical sugar coating required. Kristian Woolf’s side was outworked, outplayed, and embarrassed at home. The response will reveal whether the Dolphins are a genuine finals team or another side preparing to drift out of contention during the final two months.

The team news gives them every chance. Tabuai-Fidow returns at fullback, allowing Trai Fuller to move to the reserves. Bostock and Cobbo restore size, yardage and finishing power to the backline, joining Jamayne Isaako and Herbie Farnworth. That group is considerably stronger than the one Cronulla exposed.

The concern remains the halves. Isaiya Katoa is still unavailable, leaving Kodi Nikorima and Bradley Schneider to control the attack. Schneider can kick and organise, but he does not offer Katoa’s creativity or calm under pressure. Jeremy Marshall-King must therefore become heavily involved around the ruck, while Nikorima needs to create enough early shape to prevent the Cowboys compressing around Farnworth and Hammer.

Plath’s ankle is another late mail concern, although he has been named on the bench. If he plays, his work rate and defensive effort should improve a middle that was badly exposed last week.

Cowboys Ride Momentum Back Into Top Eight

North Queensland’s 19-18 golden point victory over Manly was a season shaping result. The Cowboys scored twice in the final 12 minutes to force extra time before Scott Drinkwater landed the match winning field goal. It was their second consecutive victory and returned them to the top eight.

Drinkwater was again central to everything good. His willingness to support through the middle and take ownership in decisive moments gives North Queensland a genuine match winner even while Dearden remains sidelined. Jake Clifford has provided steady game management, while Jaxon Purdue continues to gain experience at five-eighth.

The potential return of Dearden changes the betting picture. He is listed among the reserves and is expected to push strongly for selection after another week of training. If he returns, Purdue will likely shift into the centres, immediately lifting the Cowboys’ organisation and running threat.

The forward pack remains powerful despite the losses of Mikaele and Bateman. Jason Taumalolo, Reuben Cotter, Jeremiah Nanai, Heilum Luki, Griffin Neame and Matthew Lodge give North Queensland enough strength to challenge the Dolphins through the middle. Reed Mahoney also provides ruck control and a willingness to antagonise opponents into errors.

The danger is the emotional letdown. North Queensland poured enormous energy into the Manly comeback and now face a desperate team attempting to restore pride. The Cowboys deserve confidence, but they may encounter a much sharper Dolphins side than the one Cronulla dismantled.

Dolphins vs Cowboys Recent History

The recent record is overwhelmingly in the home side’s favour. The Dolphins have won their last four meetings against North Queensland, including a 40-14 victory in Townsville earlier this season. They also dominated both 2025 clashes, scoring 58 points in Townsville before recording another high scoring win later in the year.

Recent results:
• 2026 Round 14: Dolphins def Cowboys 40-14
• 2025 Round 20: Dolphins def Cowboys 43-24
• 2025 Round 15: Dolphins def Cowboys 58-4
• 2024 Round 9: Dolphins def Cowboys 28-26
• 2024 Round 1: Cowboys def Dolphins 43-18

The Dolphins have won six of the eight completed premiership meetings overall, while Jamayne Isaako has scored 108 points across his past seven games against North Queensland.

Line in the Sand for the Dolphins

This is not a comfortable bet. The Cowboys are in better form, have won two straight and could regain their captain. The Dolphins are coming off a 66-point humiliation and remain without their preferred halfback. Everything obvious points toward North Queensland.

That is precisely why the bounce back position has some appeal.

The Dolphins have a clear history of responding after heavy losses. The last time they lost by more than 50 points at Kayo Stadium, they followed it with two narrow defeats before producing an eight-game winning streak. More importantly, the backline named this week is dramatically stronger than last weekend’s version.

Hammer, Bostock, Farnworth, Cobbo and Isaako give the Dolphins the superior outside back unit. If the forward pack can merely hold its own, the Dolphins should generate enough attacking opportunities to test a Cowboys defence that has conceded 424 points this season and still carries a negative differential despite sitting eighth.

The recent matchup record is also too strong to ignore. Four straight wins, including a 26-point victory in Townsville last month, indicate that the Dolphins’ speed and edge power consistently trouble North Queensland. Isaako has dominated this fixture, and Hammer’s return gives the Dolphins the broken-field threat they badly lacked against Cronulla.

There is a legitimate chance the 66-0 defeat has broken their confidence rather than sharpened them. That is why this remains a small play. But if the Dolphins are going to make the finals, this is the game where they must draw a line in the sand.

At home, with their strike players restored and their season beginning to wobble, I will back the Dolphins to produce the necessary response and beat a Cowboys side that may be coming off an emotional high.

Tabuai-Fidow hasn’t scored a try since round 14, some 6 weeks ago. The good news, it was against the Cowboys. He’s due, he’s awesome, and the Dolphins need him to stand up this week.
