Western Bulldogs vs Collingwood Preview & Tips: 2026 AFL Wildcard Round

August 26th 2026, 8:08pm, By: Andy Rosos

Western Bulldogs vs Collingwood Prediction & Betting Tips: AFL 2026 Wildcard Round

History will be made at the MCG on Friday night as the Western Bulldogs and Collingwood contest the AFL's first-ever Wildcard Final. What would previously have been a season-ending finish outside the eight now becomes a winner-takes-all blockbuster, with the victor advancing into the finals proper and the loser heading home.

Neither side arrives in perfect shape. The Bulldogs steadied with a Round 24 win over Melbourne after a difficult run home, while Collingwood has managed just one victory across its past four matches. The Dogs won a thriller between these sides earlier this season, but with more than 80,000 fans likely to turn the MCG into a sea of black and white, this shapes as a completely different proposition.

We bring you our full preview and expert tips for the Dogs vs Pies below, with odds thanks to UniBet!

Western Bulldogs vs Collingwood Prediction & Betting Tips: AFL 2026 Wildcard Round

Banged-Up Dogs Face Their Biggest Test

The Western Bulldogs have reinvented themselves somewhat this season, shifting away from the free-flowing football of recent years and placing a greater emphasis on their defensive structure. They've ranked among the competition's best defensive sides since Round 9, conceding 100+ points just twice across their final 15 matches of the home-and-away season.

The major concern is at the other end of the ground. Sam Darcy remains sidelined, while Aaron Naughton is battling an ankle issue and Tim English has missed the past two matches with a knee injury. That could force Marcus Bontempelli (I think this unlikely) to spend more time forward after kicking 30 goals this season, but the Dogs will desperately need their captain influencing the contest through the midfield as well. If English is announced as an inclusion, then it would be a great boost for the structure of the team.

Magpies Made for September

Collingwood's season has been far from smooth, with the Pies sitting in the wildcard positions for the final nine rounds. They briefly threatened to climb higher after rattling off six consecutive victories, but two losses and a draw across their final four games ultimately locked them into Friday night's sudden-death encounter.

There are also injury concerns for Craig McRae's side, with Scott Pendlebury and Brayden Maynard sidelined and Isaac Quaynor and Pat Lipinski under fitness clouds. However, Jordan De Goey has found form at precisely the right time, coming off 32 disposals, six clearances and two goals against Brisbane. Nick Daicos continues to operate on another level entirely, averaging a competition-leading 34.9 disposals alongside 5.7 clearances and more than a goal per game.

Match Prediction and Best Bet

The Bulldogs won by four points when these teams met in Round 12, but this is a vastly different environment. Collingwood playing a sudden-death final at the MCG is one of the most intimidating assignments in football, and the enormous Magpies crowd should give the home side another gear when the game reaches its most important moments.

The Dogs also arrive banged up, particularly through their key-position stocks, while Collingwood still possesses an abundance of players who have repeatedly delivered on the biggest stage. Expect a tight contest for much of the night, but when the pressure reaches its peak late, the Magpies look better equipped to handle the occasion.

Western Bulldogs vs Collingwood Prop Bet

The truly electric Jordan De Goey performances might be a little more few and far between these days, but there are still very few players in the competition you'd rather have when a massive final needs to be turned on its head with 10 minutes of breathtaking football. De Goey has kicked 21 goals across 15 career finals, and he enters this year's campaign in excellent touch after producing 32 disposals and two goals against Brisbane last week. Expect him to spend plenty of time forward of the ball and give himself every chance of producing another trademark September performance.

Aaron Naughton 2+ Goals | Marcus Bontempelli 25+ Disposals | Nick Daicos 30+ Disposals

When the stakes are this high, sometimes the simplest approach is to back the superstars to be superstars. Marcus Bontempelli and Nick Daicos have a strong claim as the two best players in the competition, and both should be at the centre of everything on Friday night. Bontempelli can clear 25 disposals in 2nd gear, while Daicos averaged a ridiculous 34.9 touches this season and had 37 when these teams met in Round 12. Aaron Naughton rounds out the multi for 2+ goals, with the Bulldogs desperately needing their leading goalkicker to provide a focal point if he takes his place in the side.
