Sunday afternoon at Go Media Stadium gives us another cracking matchup, as the first-placed Warriors host the Knights in a game with significant consequences for both clubs. New Zealand are chasing the minor premiership, and a top 2 finish, while Newcastle are trying to lock away a home final after last week’s damaging loss to Manly.
The Warriors have been upgraded significantly by the market after a superb run, while Newcastle have been marked down after conceding 44 at home. I understand both moves, but I think they have gone a little too far. At Knights +10.5, there is value.
My fair line is closer to Warriors -8.5, and while Go Media Stadium is an enormous advantage, Newcastle have enough attacking class through Kalyn Ponga, Bradman Best and Fletcher Sharpe to remain competitive.
Team news complicates things for both sides. The Warriors lose Dallin Watene-Zelezniak to a broken collarbone, with Luke Laulilii replacing him on the wing. Te Maire Martin has surprisingly been named to return in the halves after illness. Newcastle is without Dominic Young and Tyson Frizell through suspension, while Phoenix Crossland has undergone knee surgery. Dane Gagai returns, and Brodie Jones is among the reserves.

Warriors Continue Their Charge to the Minor Premiership
New Zealand’s 45-26 win over South Sydney reinforced their status as a genuine premiership contender. The Warriors scored freely, in a game producing 12 tries between the two teams in an entertaining contest and moved to the top of the ladder on points differential.
Mitch Barnett was outstanding again, producing 182 metres from 20 runs and 33 tackles while also scoring a try. James Fisher-Harris worked brilliantly alongside him, and Taine Tuaupiki provided enormous energy from fullback with 146 metres and five tackle breaks.>
Perhaps the most impressive aspect was the attacking output despite disruption in the halves. Chanel Harris-Tavita and Luke Hanson were asked to guide the side, yet the Warriors still posted 45 points.
This week, Te Maire Martin’s return provides a major boost. He has been one of their best organisers throughout 2026 and should immediately give the Warriors greater balance in their kicking game.
The loss of Watene-Zelezniak hurts. His yardage and finishing have been central to New Zealand’s success, and his collarbone injury will keep him out until the finals. Luke Laulilii takes over on the wing.
Still, the foundations remain intact: Fisher-Harris, Barnett, Wayde Egan and the forward pack continue to give New Zealand an enormous platform. The Warriors also have genuine motivation. They sit first and cannot afford a stumble with Penrith and the Roosters breathing down their necks.
The danger for spread backers is that the Knights are significantly better than their Round 25 scoreline suggests.
Knights Get Brought Back to Earth
Newcastle’s 44-24 loss to Manly was a brutal reality check. The Knights had been pushing toward the top four but were completely overwhelmed by a Sea Eagles side that had lost six consecutive games.
Manly’s outside backs dominated. Lehi Hopoate had nine tackle breaks, while Garrick and Turbo both cleared 150 metres. Newcastle simply could not contain the Sea Eagles once the game moved beyond the middle third.
That defensive performance is a concern heading to Auckland. However, the market response also needs context.
Newcastle remains sixth and have been one of the competition’s better attacking sides for most of the season. Ponga is still capable of changing any contest, Bradman Best gives them enormous power on the left edge and Fletcher Sharpe has continued to develop into a dangerous playmaker.
The problem is the team news. Dominic Young and Tyson Frizell are both suspended after hip drop charges, taking away elite finishing and a huge amount of experience. Phoenix Crossland is also out after knee surgery. Dane Gagai returning helps considerably, while Francis Manuleleua’s availability restores another forward option.
This is still a weaker Newcastle side than Justin Holbrook would ideally want for a trip to Auckland. But +10.5 gives us plenty of room. Newcastle do not need to win. They need to remain competitive enough that Ponga and their strike players can keep this inside two scores, and I like them to bounce back this week after a poor effort last Sunday at home.

These teams met in Round 3 this season, when the Warriors produced a dominant 38-12 victory at McDonald Jones Stadium. That is the obvious concern when taking Newcastle with the points.
The Warriors also swept both meetings in 2025, winning 26-12 in Christchurch and 20-15 at Newcastle.

Knights Can Keep This Inside Double Digits
This is a classic situation where I agree with the market direction but disagree with how far it has gone.
The Warriors absolutely deserve to be strong favourites. They are top of the ladder, playing at Go Media Stadium and have a forward pack that can expose Newcastle’s defensive weaknesses.
But -10.5 is starting to price New Zealand as though Newcastle are an average bottom 8 side. They are not. Even without Young, Frizell and Crossland, the Knights still have Ponga, Best, Gagai, Sharpe and enough attacking talent to produce points.
The key is surviving the first 20 minutes. If the Warriors score twice early and the crowd gets involved, this can look very similar to the Round 3 meeting. Newcastle cannot allow Fisher-Harris and Barnett to dominate every early set. If they remain attached, the handicap becomes extremely useful.
New Zealand also have their own disruption. DWZ is a major out, and Martin is returning after a hamstring injury, so may not be at full fitness. They remain the stronger side, but this is not a completely settled lineup.
My fair number is around Warriors -8.5, so +10.5 gives us a couple of points of value and gets us a reasonable bet for the game. I would not be surprised if the Warriors win something like 28-20 or 30-22.
That still gives New Zealand another important victory while comfortably cashing the Newcastle ticket.
