Friday Night Football at 4 Pines Park gives us a matchup between two sides whose seasons have taken very different paths, even if neither has ultimately reached the position they hoped for. Manly’s finals hopes remain incredibly slim, but they are still mathematically alive after finally snapping a six-game losing streak with a stunning 44-24 win over Newcastle. The Dragons, meanwhile, are now guaranteed to finish with the wooden spoon and are coming off a 44-14 hiding from Canterbury.

Sea Eagles vs Dragons Prediction & Tips: 2026 NRL Round 26
The fact that the Sea Eagles are still mathematically alive in the race for finals is a distinction that matters from a betting angle. Manly at least have something tangible left to chase, and their response last weekend showed there is still some fight in the group. St George Illawarra have spent the past month producing a couple of spirited efforts, but the Bulldogs result looked like a side finally running out of road.
The market is close to my ratings, so Sea Eagles -8.5 is only a relatively small play. My trust in Manly has diminished significantly over the past six weeks, but Tom Trbojevic is back, they return to 4 Pines Park, and the Dragons now have very little beyond pride to play for.
Tolu Koula is out with an ankle injury, forcing Josh Feledy into the centres, while 19 year old Onitoni Large is set for his NRL debut from the bench. For the Dragons, Jacob Liddle is out with a calf injury, meaning Damien Cook moves into the starting hooker role.
Sea Eagles Finally Show Signs of Life
Manly’s 44-24 upset of Newcastle was exactly the response they needed after six consecutive defeats had threatened to completely bury their season. The Sea Eagles arrived at McDonald Jones Stadium as outsiders against a Knights side pushing for a top 4 finish, yet played with far more energy and intent than they had shown throughout their slump.
The biggest difference was Tom Trbojevic. Returning from his hamstring injury, Turbo ran for 154 metres and immediately gave Manly a more dangerous attacking shape. Josh Feledy scored the first try of his career, which turned into a hat-trick, while Lehi Hopoate produced nine tackle breaks and 151 metres and Reuben Garrick added 156 metres. The outside backs completely overwhelmed Newcastle in yardage and gave Manly the platform they had lacked during their losing run.
That performance was a reminder that this roster still has plenty of attacking upside when its best players are available. Turbo’s support play completely changes the way Manly can attack around the middle, while Jason Saab, Garrick and Hopoate provide speed and finishing on the edges.
The issue remains whether one good performance can be trusted after such a poor month. Manly lost six straight before the Newcastle win, repeatedly conceding soft points and failing to close games they had opportunities to win.
Tolu Koula’s ankle injury is another blow this week, although Feledy’s form last Saturday makes the positional reshuffle easier to absorb. Manly still have Jamal Fogarty controlling territory, Haumole Olakau’atu giving them an elite right edge weapon and Jake Trbojevic providing experience through the middle.
Most importantly, they are back at 4 Pines Park. Their finals equation requires them to win both remaining games and hope other results fall their way. It is a long shot, but it is still something to play for.
Dragons Finally Look Like Wooden Spooners
St George Illawarra’s 44-14 loss to Canterbury was one of their poorest performances during what had otherwise been a more competitive late season stretch. The Dragons entered after consecutive victories, but the Bulldogs raced to a 24-0 halftime lead and ultimately scored seven tries as St George Illawarra struggled badly with errors and execution.
That first half was particularly disappointing because the Dragons had finally started to show some signs of progress. Their wins over Cronulla and Wests Tigers had been built on defensive commitment and a willingness to stay in contests. Against Canterbury, that resilience disappeared.
There were simply too many mistakes. The Bulldogs repeatedly received favourable field position and made the Dragons pay, with Matt Burton crossing twice despite spending 10 minutes in the sin bin. St George Illawarra did show some resistance after halftime, but by then the result was effectively decided.
The Dragons now enter the final two rounds knowing they cannot avoid the wooden spoon. That does not automatically mean they stop trying, particularly with young players attempting to cement first grade positions, but psychologically, the season is over.
Team news does not help. Clint Gutherson remains sidelined, while Jacob Liddle’s calf injury pushes Damien Cook into the starting hooker role. Daniel Atkinson remains at fullback, with Moses Suli and Valentine Holmes in the centres and Kyle Flanagan continuing in the halves.
The young forward pack still has plenty to gain from the final fortnight, but this looks like a difficult spot. Manly have considerably more strike out wide, and if the Dragons repeat last week’s execution, the scoreboard could get away from them again.

These sides have already met this season, with Manly winning 28-18 at WIN Stadium in Round 6. Tom Trbojevic was excellent, while Reuben Garrick produced 238 run metres as the Sea Eagles controlled the second half.

Manly Have Enough Motivation Left
I am not pretending this is some enormous value position. My numbers are reasonably close to the market, and Manly have done enough damage to betting confidence over the past month that laying more than a converted try carries obvious risk. But there is a clear motivational difference.
Manly can still technically play finals. They need plenty to go right, but while there is a pulse, they have to keep winning. The Dragons know they are finishing last.
That distinction becomes particularly important if Manly establish an early lead. The Dragons have just conceded 44 points, are missing their first-choice fullback, and starting hooker and are reaching the final fortnight of a disastrous season. Their ability to chase a two-score deficit looks questionable.
Turbo’s return also changes the matchup significantly. He gives Manly the best attacking player on the field and immediately improves their yardage and support play. Even without Koula, the Sea Eagles have enough strike through Saab, Garrick, Hopoate and Olakau’atu to pressure St George Illawarra’s edges.
The risk is obvious: Manly’s defence has been unreliable, and the Dragons have produced a couple of unexpected efforts over the past month. If this is 14-10 deep into the second half, laying -8.5 will feel horrible.
I simply think the more likely script has Manly gradually pulling away. They looked rejuvenated with Turbo back last week, return home and have something left to chase. The Dragons may already be mentally looking toward September holidays.
Small play, but Manly should win comfortably enough.
