NBL25 Round 17 Preview & Betting Tips

New Zealand Breakers vs Tasmania JackJumpers

Thursday 5:30pm AEDT (Jan 16), Spark Arena

The Breakers came oh so close to recording a big upset win against United last outing – that was until Chris Goulding broke Breaker hearts with a 30ft bomb in the dying seconds. That’s now four straight losses for the Breakers and 12 from their past 13. On a positive note, they have been far more competitive in recent games with all four of their recent losses being by 10 points or less. This has come about despite Parker Jackson-Cartwright serving a lengthy suspension, although he’s set to return.

Meanwhile, the JackJumpers’ season is beginning to slip away on the back of three losses in their last four games. They’ve been absolutely cruelled by injury this campaign and will continue to be without key cogs Sean Macdonald and Will Magnay for the remainder of NBL25. Still, the Jackies will continue to fight and managed to pull off a sensational comeback win in Round 16 against the 36ers.

These clubs have had three battles this season and the JackJumpers have won all three convincingly. They won at home by 19 & 15 points, as well as in New Zealand by 24 points. And despite injuries to key players, I’m extremely surprised to see them priced as underdogs against a Breakers team considering they've won only one of their last 13 games. Take the Jackies to complete the season sweep on Thursday night.

Brisbane Bullets vs Cairns Taipans

Friday 7:30pm AEDT (Jan 17), Brisbane Entertainment Centre

The wounded Bullets were heavy losers in both of their Round 16 outings, going down to the Phoenix by 19 points and most recently to the Wildcats by 27 points. That’s now five losses from their last six games in a stretch that has seen them slip to eighth on the ladder and two wins behind sixth. Tyrell Harrison will remain out with concussion on Friday night, which means Josh Bannan is a good play in the prop markets once again.

The Taipans succumbed to another pair of defeats in Round 16, with a four-point loss to the Kings quickly followed by an 11-point loss to the Phoenix. Despite the L’s, the Snakes put themselves in winning positions again but couldn’t convert down the stretch. The good news for the Snakes is they remain healthy with no one named on the official NBL25 injury list.

Both clubs come into this matchup in losing form, although the Taipans have been the more competitive of the two and I think they represent solid value here. They have a talent and depth advantage on Friday night, and it’s simply up to them to capitalise. I like them to win as the slight underdogs.

South East Melbourne Phoenix vs New Zealand Breakers

Saturday 5:30pm AEDT (Jan 18), State Basketball Centre

The Phoenix bandwagon continues to build momentum in the back half of NBL25. They took care of business in both of their Round 16 games and have now won by 10+ points in three straight outings. On top of that, the Phoenix have eight of their last 10 games and remain a legitimate chance of a top two finish. Matt Hurt has lifted in Derrick Walton Jnr’s absence, and Nathan Sobey continues to play at a high level.

Elsewhere, the Breakers put an end to a four-game losing streak with a win over the undermanned JackJumpers in their opening game of Round 17. Sam Mennenga is going through a purple patch right now and put the JackJumpers to the sword with 29 points and nine rebound, while Parker Jackson-Cartwright contributed with 8/6/5 in his first game back from a five-game suspension.

The Breakers have improved their performance over the past couple of weeks, but they still aren’t playing at a level to compete with the Phoenix in my opinion. The Phoenix are the form team in the competition and also have home court advantage on their side on Saturday night. I expect them to be winning this by double-digits.

Phoenix -6.5

Sydney Kings vs Tasmania JackJumpers

Sunday 2:30pm AEDT (Jan 19), Qudos Bank Arena

The Kings managed to come out on top in a tough battle against the Snakes last outing in a much-needed bounce back win after falling to United. That’s now three wins from their last four games in an important stretch as we near the end of the regular season. The Kings remain in the hunt for a top two finish but would likely need to win all four of their remaining games, meaning they need to be locked in right from the tip-off on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the JackJumpers’ season and their attempt at a championship defence is quickly slipping away. They’ve won only one of their last five games, and three of the losses during this stretch have been by 10+ points – totally unlikely the JackJumpers we’ve come to expect. However, injuries have played a major part in their undoing and the news is only getting worse with Majok Deng now set to miss the rest of the season.

The Kings have been a touch unreliable with their effort and intensity from game to game this season, but they have a major talent advantage in this matchup as well as the home support on their side. If the Kings are serious about competing for a championship, then they should be easily accounting for the undermanned JackJumpers in this one.

Kings -8.5

$1.87 (1.5 Units)

Cairns Taipans vs Adelaide 36ers

Sunday 4:30pm AEDT (Jan 19), Cairns Convention Centre

The Taipans secured their fifth win of the season on Sunday night to go along with their 18 losses. They were on the road against the heavily undermanned Bullets and took full advantage with a 31-point win. That’s now two wins from their last four games with both of them coming on the road. The Snakes now head back to Cairns where they’ve lost nine straight games.

The 36ers failed to get enough stops on the defensive end to give themselves a winning chance against the Wildcats on Friday night. They came away from RAC Arena with a seven-point loss, and their top six chances are beginning to quickly slip away. They’re now two wins behind the JackJumpers in sixth with just five games remaining.

This is almost a do-or-die game for the 36ers, as a loss would mean they no longer control their destiny in their top six aspirations. The good news is they come up against a Snakes outfit with nothing to play for. And while I don’t have a whole lot of trust in the 36ers due to their inconsistencies this season, I’m prepared to back them in here as it’s truly a season-defining game for them.

36ers -3.5

South East Melbourne Phoenix vs Sydney Kings

Wednesday 7:30pm AEDT (Jan 22), State Basketball Centre

The South East Melbourne Phoenix and Sydney Kings are set for an intriguing showdown, with both teams in solid form. The Phoenix have been red-hot, winning four straight and seven of their last eight. What’s been most impressive is their dominance, with all four recent wins coming by double digits. Nathan Sobey and Matt Hurt are playing some of their best basketball, driving the team’s surge up the ladder to fifth with a 14-10 record. Their confidence is sky-high, and at home, they’ll be tough to stop.

The Kings, sitting third at 15-10, have also had a strong stretch, winning four of their last five games. However, their victories have come in less convincing fashion, often requiring late-game heroics. Kouat Noi has been outstanding, and his recent career-high 32 points highlights how dangerous he can be. While Sydney’s resilience is admirable, it’s hard to ignore that they’ve needed comebacks to get the job done, raising some questions about their consistency.

On paper, this feels like a coin-flip game, but momentum is firmly with the Phoenix. They’ve shown they can win big and keep their foot on the gas, while Sydney has relied on grinding out results. At home, South East Melbourne looks the more reliable bet. In an evenly matched contest, trust the Phoenix to keep flying and edge out the Kings.
