What a thrilling opening round in the AFL it was! There was plenty of exciting finishes in Round 1 and some massive upsets lead by the likes of the Crows defeating the Cats at home to get their season off to a terrific start. The Hawks and Bombers played out an absolute slugfest while the Swans shocked the football world with an impressive win in Brisbane.
It was a solid weekend for Before You Bet and followers as we hit on 5/9 best bets and finished the week +1.31 units in profit. A few of the shock results really caught us off guard, most notably the three upsets on Saturday but as the season continues, these games should get easier to feel out.
(Odds correct as of Monday, March 22nd)
The Blues were gallant in their Round 1 game against the Tigers but ultimately went down by 25 points on Thursday night. They'll be back in action in the round opener again this week as they host the Pies from the MCG on Thursday night. Both teams will be looking to bounce back after R1 losses after the Magpies were handled comfortably by the Western Bulldogs on Friday night.

Another clash where two sides will be looking to bounce back after Round 1 losses on Friday night, but certainly not one that we expected to pan out this way as two of the preliminary finalists from last year both suffered shock losses. The Cats went down to last year's wooden spooners in the Adelaide Crows while the Lions were smashed at home by the Sydney Swans. Just four out of the 122 VFL/AFL premiers have started the season 0-2.

The Swans and Crows are flying high after Round 1 wins that were dominated by super impressive youngsters for both teams. The likes of Errol Gulden, Braeden Campbell and Logan McDonald were outstanding for the Swans while James Rowe and Sam Berry shone for the Crows. This will be a fascinating clash.

The Port Adelaide Power handled their business better than anyone in Round 1. Granted, they faced the Kangaroos who are slated to be at the tail of the ladder this season, but after a slow first quarter they barely put a foot wrong for the rest of the game. The Bombers will be looking to bounce back from a heartbreaking loss to the Hawks in which they were, at one stage, 40 points ahead.

It was only Round 1, but the Saints might have had one of those defining wins on the weekend. With 9 of their best 22 players out of the side through injury and suspension, the Saints travelled to Sydney and defeated an impressive GWS side in really unfavourable conditions. They will be back at their fortress, Marvel Stadium, this weekend against a Melbourne side who recorded a comfortable win against the Dockers in Round 1.

The Suns were dealt a heartbreaking blow in their Round 1 loss to the Eagles as superstar youngster Matt Rowell went down with a knee injury. They get a great chance to bounce back on Saturday night as they face the Kangaroos at home from 8.10pm. The $1.35 opening price tag for the Suns must be one of the shortest in their clubs history.

Another clash between two 1-0 teams here as the Hawks host the Tigers in the marquee clash on Sunday aftenoon. These two teams have been involved in some great games over the past few years and this one promises to be another one as the Hawks tails are up after a 1 point win over the Bombers.

What a fantastic matchup this will be between two of the most attacking teams in the AFL. The Dogs rolled out their shiny new recruits on Friday night against the Pies, recording a 16 point win on the back of impressive performances from the bulk of their star studded midfield. The Eagles looked vulnerable at times against the Suns at times but blazed away in the final quarter to record a 25 point win.

The final game of Round 2 will see the Dockers hosting the Giants from 6.10pm. Again, both teams will be looking to bounce back from disappointing results in the opening round. The Dockers start as slight favourites and will be thankful to be back at Optus Stadium in what should be good conditions.
