Hawthorn vs Sydney Prediction & Betting Tips: AFL 2026 Round 2

Hawks Kickstart Campaign

The Hawks head into Thursday night with some renewed momentum after what was a tough start to 2026. They were disappointing in the Opening Round at ENGIE Stadium, losing by 27 points to the Giants in a game defined by poor finishing and lapses in physical pressure. Sam Mitchell’s side responded emphatically in Round 1, defeating Essendon by 62 points at the MCG. The Hawks midfield took control of the clearances and their transition play was lethal, particularly during a second quarter rampage that put the result beyond doubt. Now back at the MCG and with a large crowd expected, the Hawks have a major opportunity to solidify their standing.

Horrible News for Gulden and the Swans

The Swans have begun 2026 in impressive form under senior coach Dean Cox. They defeated Carlton by 63 points in the Opening Round and then beat the reigning premiers, the Brisbane Lions, by 44 points in Round 1 at the SCG. Their ball movement has been precise and their pressure remains the league standard. However, two significant injuries have changed the outlook for this match. Errol Gulden suffered a dislocated shoulder against the Lions and requires surgery that will sideline him for roughly four months. Isaac Heeney also reported hamstring tightness in that game. While scans cleared him of major damage, he is listed as a test and remains unlikely to play on a five day turnaround.

Recent H2H History

Recent matches between these teams have provided a mix of results. Sydney had a period of dominance with an 81 point win at the SCG in 2023 and a 76 point victory at the MCG in 2024. Hawthorn managed a 20 point upset at the SCG in the 2025 Opening Round to break that streak. Over their last five meetings, Sydney holds a 3 to 2 advantage.

Injuries and Short Break to Take Their Toll?

The Swans still have enough talent and form to keep this game competitive into the final term despite their missing stars and the fatigue of a short break. The Hawks will benefit from the home ground advantage and the extra recovery time following their dominant performance last week. While Sydney is likely to apply early pressure and stay in touch, Hawthorn should eventually take control in the second half, making a win in the 1-39 point range the best bet.

Hawthorn vs Sydney Prop Bet

Mackenzie put together a strong first game of the season in the seniors last week with 21 disposals against the Bombers. He had the fourth most CBA’s for their mids with 16, with the fifth most being MacDonald with 9, so he’s clearly in their best four mids. He also had 75% TOG which was another positive sign as that was higher than Newcombe (73%) and equal with Ward (75%). Clearly, the role is there for Mackenzie, and the value is certainly there too.

Hawthorn vs Sydney Same Game Multi

(HAW) Josh Ward & Cam Mackenzie 20+ Disposals: The Hawks mids got to work against the Bombers last week and Ward and Mackenzie were at the forefront of that with 26 & 21 disposals respectively. They should get their chances again here against more of a depleted Swans midfield.

(SYD) Justin McInerney & Angus Sheldrick 20+ Disposals: With Gulden confirmed out and Heeney a big watch, McInerney and Sheldrick should both see their CBA’s increase. They’ve both had 23+ touches in each game, and I expect them to find at least 20 again here.
