Friday Night NRL at McDonald Jones Stadium continues Round 21 with one of the best contests of the weekend, as the Newcastle Knights host the Sydney Roosters in a matchup carrying genuine top four and finals implications. The market has struggled to separate the teams, and my own ratings reach almost exactly the same conclusion. Newcastle has the home ground advantage and remain one of the competition’s most dangerous attacking sides, while the Roosters possess the more complete roster and have dominated this rivalry over an extended period.
This is not a game where I want to force a large early week position. The Roosters have won nine of the past 10 meetings between the clubs, but Newcastle are considerably stronger than many of the Knights sides involved in that run. James Tedesco and Robert Toia return for the Chooks, while Newcastle lose Dane Gagai to calf tightness but regain young prop Cody Hopwood.
With the market close to my numbers, the best betting approach is to keep the powder dry and back the side I trust slightly more. The Roosters’ experience through the spine, recent dominance of the matchup and greater defensive reliability make them the narrow selection.

Knights Remain Dangerous Despite Sharks Defeat
Newcastle’s loss to Cronulla last week halted their momentum, but it did little to change the broader view that the Knights are a legitimate finals side. They entered Sharks Stadium facing one of the competition’s hottest teams and remained competitive despite Cronulla’s strong home form and increasingly settled spine.
The Knights’ strength remains their attacking ceiling. Kalyn Ponga can alter the shape of a contest from almost anywhere on the field, Dylan Brown gives them a genuine organiser and running threat in the halves, and Fletcher Sharpe has continued to develop into a dangerous complementary playmaker. Around them, Dominic Young, Greg Marzhew and Bradman Best provide size, speed and finishing power.
Dane Gagai’s absence is significant this week. Gagai remains one of Newcastle’s most dependable yardage carriers and defensive organisers, and his experience would have been valuable against a Roosters backline featuring Tedesco, Daniel Tupou, Robert Toia, and Mark Nawaqanitawase. His calf issue forces another adjustment to a backline that has already required several reshuffles throughout the season. Cody Hopwood’s likely return helps restore some power to the forward rotation.
Newcastle’s defensive record remains the principal concern. Their attack can keep them in almost any contest, but they have conceded too many points against fellow finals contenders. Against the Roosters, they cannot rely on repeatedly chasing from behind. Sydney’s halves and middle forwards are too capable of controlling territory once they establish a lead.
McDonald Jones Stadium should ensure the Knights begin with energy. The crowd will be enormous, Newcastle should attack aggressively, and the Roosters are unlikely to receive anything cheaply. The challenge is sustaining that intensity for 80 minutes rather than allowing another experienced opponent to gradually wrestle away control.
Roosters Welcome Back Their Main Man
The Roosters enter Round 21 with several important reinforcements, led by the return of James Tedesco after his concussion absence. Robert Toia also returns after being rested, immediately strengthening an already powerful backline. Benaiah Ioelu and Toby Rodwell are among the other inclusions, with Rex Bassingthwaighte dropping out of the squad.
Tedesco’s return changes the entire attacking and yardage profile. The Roosters remain dangerous without him, but they lose their best support player, most reliable backfield runner and defensive organiser. With Tedesco back alongside Daly Cherry-Evans, Sam Walker and Reece Robson, the Roosters again field one of the competition’s most experienced and complete spines.
The Roosters’ recent form has not always been flawless, but their underlying profile remains strong. They defend more reliably than Newcastle, possess a better long kicking game and have enough power through Lindsay Collins, Spencer Leniu, Victor Radley, and Naufahu Whyte to prevent the Knights from dominating the middle.
Cherry-Evans and Walker are the key to the betting angle. Newcastle can be exposed when opponents force them to begin sets from deep and deny Ponga clean attacking possession. The Roosters have two halves capable of repeatedly finding corners, challenging Newcastle’s back three and building pressure without taking unnecessary risks.
The concern is that the Roosters have occasionally lost patience this season. When Walker and Cherry-Evans begin chasing attacking plays too early, the Roosters can invite opponents into broken field football. That would suit Newcastle perfectly. Trent Robinson should instead want his side to play through field position, keep Ponga working from inside his own half and trust the points to arrive.
The return of Toia gives the visitors greater defensive security on an edge, while Tedesco restores the player most likely to finish through the middle once Newcastle’s forwards begin to fatigue. The Roosters do not possess a massive ratings advantage, but they appear slightly better equipped to win the decisive moments.
Knights vs Roosters Recent History
The Roosters have won nine of the past 10 clashes between these sides, including both recent meetings. Earlier this season, Sydney overturned a 24-12 deficit to beat Newcastle 38-24 at Allianz Stadium, scoring five tries across the final 25 minutes. Last season’s lone meeting was considerably tighter, with the Roosters escaping McDonald Jones Stadium with a 12-8 victory.

The history is overwhelmingly favourable to Sydney, but the narrow margins in several matches explain why the money line is preferable to laying a tight spread.
Roosters the Narrow Selection in Quality Contest
There is no major numerical edge here. My ratings sit extremely close to the market, Newcastle have a strong home ground advantage and the Knights possess enough attacking quality to win outright. This is exactly the sort of game where patience is preferable to forcing an early bet. However, when asked to choose a side, I still land on the Roosters.
The first reason is the spine. Tedesco, Cherry-Evans, Walker, and Robson provide Sydney with a level of experience and control that Newcastle cannot quite match. Ponga and Brown may be the more explosive pairing, but the Roosters have more ways to dictate the pace of the game.
The second is defence. Newcastle’s attack has regularly carried them this season, but their defensive inconsistency remains difficult to ignore. Against the Roosters, one poor 10-minute period could be enough to turn a close game into a two-score deficit. The Roosters are generally more capable of protecting a lead once they establish field position.
The final factor is recent history. Winning nine of the past 10 meetings does not guarantee anything, particularly against an improved Newcastle side, but it does demonstrate how consistently the Roosters’ structure has troubled the Knights. Even in Newcastle, the visitors have repeatedly found a way to control the crucial late stages.
Gagai’s absence also matters. The Knights still have strike, but they lose an experienced defensive presence and strong yardage carrier against a Roosters backline now restored by Tedesco and Toia.
This should be an excellent contest, and I would not be surprised if it is decided inside the final 10 minutes. Newcastle can win through Ponga brilliance, home ground emotion and middle pressure. The Roosters can win through kicking, patience, and a stronger defensive finish.
I will take the better and more experienced side. It is not a match for a huge early week outlay, but the Roosters money line is the right lean.
