Essendon vs Geelong Predictions & Tips: 2025 AFL Round 14
The Cats are Coming
Whilst the fanfare this season has largely been slated towards Collingwood and Brisbane, Geelong have been building nicely, to sit in fourth place heading into Round 14. The Cats are half a game behind second place and are on a four-game winning streak thanks to their 24-point win against the Suns last week. Arguably the most impressive part of Geelong’s season has been their work against the stronger sides in the competition. Geelong have a 5-1 record against the current top eight teams, legitimising their case as genuine premiership contenders.
Brave, but not Good Enough
For the second week in a row the Bombers fought back from a significant quarter time deficit to be within a goal in the dying stages, but couldn’t get over the line. 12 of the 25 goals Essendon have conceded in the last fortnight have come in the first quarter, but they’ve shown resilience and a defensive backbone that they’ve been lacking for quite some time. In four of their last six games Essendon have held their opposition to under 79 points, despite having only one key defender available for selection. With Mason Redman going down with injury last week, it leaves Andy McGrath as the only first choice defender available for the Dons.
Stats That Matter
Geelong’s attacking capacity is a frightening prospect for a decimated Essendon defence, with the Cats the third highest scoring team in the AFL this season, averaging 98 points per game. Before playing in heavy rain last week, the Cats had kicked five consecutive scores above 105 points, Essendon have only kicked 100 points in a game once this season.
Geelong’s blend of control and chaos allows them to succeed regardless of what the opposition throws up. Geelong ranks 2nd for marks and 2nd for kicks, highlighting their ability to control the game. However the Cats are also a brilliant ground ball team ranking 1st for tackles, 1st for tackles inside forward 50, 1st for pressure acts, 3rd for forward 50 ground ball gets and 5th for ground ball gets.
This balance has led to an excellent scoring profile, ranking 1st for scores from forward half, 2nd for scores from stoppage, 3rd for scores from turnover, 4th for scores from centre bounce and 6th for scores from defensive half. They can get you in any different manner, which makes them so dangerous.
So who wins? Here's our Bombers vs Cats Tip
As we’ve highlighted earlier, Geelong is arguably the most well rounded team in the competition and they shouldn’t have any troubles getting past an injury riddled Essendon side. The big advantage for Geelong will be in their forward 50, with Jeremy Cameron, Shannon Neale and Ollie Henry all set to get favourable matchups. If the forwards get good supply, this game could get very ugly.
Geelong have well and truly had the wood over Essendon, in what has been one of the most one way matchups across the last 20 years. Since 2006 Geelong have won 19 of their 22 matches against Essendon. The Cats are currently on a seven game winning streak against the Bombers, with an average winning margin of 50 points. Essendon have only gotten within five goals once in those seven games, and this game will follow a similar trend.
