Italian Grand Prix Betting Tips
Sunday 12th September, 11.00pm (AEST)
The second week of the F1 triple header produced a much happier result at the Dutch Grand Prix. The new circuit received good reviews despite making overtaking rather difficult. The wet weather never materialised on race day, and Max Verstappen was able to capitalise on a very narrow win in qualifying to retain the lead for most of the race. Mercedes tried to gain a tactical advantage, but just weren’t fast enough. That meant my Lewis Hamilton tip failed, while some qualifying mishaps ruined the chances of Lando Norris and Sebastian Vettel. Thankfully Pierre Gasly managed to secure a top 6 place to limit any losses.
We head to Monza this weekend for the Italian Grand Prix, which rounds out the F1 triple header before a well deserved break. Check out our preview and betting tips for the event below.
The Track
The Monza Circuit has hosted the race since 1949. It features some long straights and is generally a high speed circuit, with only a couple of tighter sections. Of the current drivers, Lewis Hamilton has 5 wins at the circuit, while Sebastian Vettel has 3 and Fernando Alonso 2. The past two editions have seen Pierre Gasly and Charles Leclerc win in big upsets.
Betting Tips
Red Bull really seem to be getting stronger as the season progresses, but we’re heading to a higher speed circuit where there is only a slim chance of weather impacting proceedings. In what has been a see-sawing season so far, I’m going to follow the trend and back Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton to get back on top this week. With his odds drifting out to $2.75 there is some extra reward for doing so.
I’m looking at a bit of a smokey to join them on the podium, in the form of Carlos Sainz at $11. It may require something happening to one or more of the favourites, but I’m drawn to those odds, particularly when they are double what you can get for his teammate Charles Leclerc. Sainz has already landed two podiums this year and definitely has the pedigree to make waves in this race.
Finally I’m going to get on board some more juicy odds in the form of $6.50 for Esteban Ocon to finish in the top 6. He’s been around the mark often this season, finishing in the 7-9 range seven times. Again I’m drawn to the fact that he’s paying twice as much as teammate Fernando Alonso despite beating him in 7 of 13 races this season. The Alpine team has had a good run in the last 4-5 races and are competitive with the likes of Aston Martin, McLaren, AlphaTauri and even Ferrari.
