The lower ranked nation in the final according to FIFA are #6 ranked Spain. They were able to get the better of Sweden in their rollercoaster semi-final match, eventually edging them 2-1 after a dramatic final 10 minutes in which all three goals were scored.
Their recent win was their fifth from six matches at this World Cup, with their only blemish being a 4-0 upset loss against Japan in their third and final group match.
The main concern for Spain leading into the final is their defensive vulnerability. They’ve now conceded in each of their last four matches for a total of seven goals conceded, which is by far the most out of the four team that made the semi-finals.
In contrast, England enter the final having conceded just three goals for the entire tournament and haven’t let in multiple goals in any of their six matches. What’s more, they’ve managed to bang in 14 goals of their own, highlighted by a six-goal game against China in the group stage.
Still, England’s best performance clearly came in their semi-final win over co-hosts Australia. They dominated the fixture right from the opening whistle and managed to beat goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold on three separate occasions, setting up a thoroughly impressive and deserving 3-1 win.
Even more impressive for the Lionesses is the fact they’ve been able to win their past two knockout matches against terrific opposition without superstar Lauren James playing a single minute. James copped a two-match suspension for her brain fade against Nigeria, but is now free to be injected into their lineup for Sunday’s final.
With James back in the team and England coming off a brave 3-1 win against the dangerous Australians, I’m surprised to see them listed as the slight underdogs against Spain. Since Sarina Wiegman took over as manager the Lionesses have been crowned European Champions and have lost just one match in total.
The Lionesses have proven themselves in big matches time and time again and at near 3-1 odds, there’s clear value in them winning the final in regulation.
