Match Preview
The Sharks displayed an impressive standard last week to defeat the Sea Eagles 30-14 on the road. Just as the result appeared to be getting too close for comfort, the Sharks clicked into another gear and their opponents were unable to match them. They played a simple but controlled brand of rugby league which saw them dominate possession (54%) and build pressure via a high completion rate (81%). This also allowed them to defeat their opponents in most areas; a highlight was their defensive effort in missing only 17 tackles.
The Storm put on a show prior to the Sharks taking the field, completely dismantling the Tigers 64-0 at home. The 11-try display was impressive to watch, with many tries underpinned by their desire to stay alive on a play; having 56% possession also helped their cause. They averaged an impressive 10.5m per carry, had 10 line breaks and 590 PCM’s. Their defence was also great, keeping the Tigers to just 8.2m per carry, 1 line breaks and missing just 20 tackles.
The outcome of this match will largely depend on the inclusion of Harry Grant. At the time of writing, he is listed in the reserves. If he takes the field, another dimension is added to their attack. The Sharks were good last week at different stages, but the performance of their opponents can cast doubt on their success. The same can be said of the Storm but the manner of their victory should outweigh any concerns. Both have demonstrated shortcomings against some opponents in 2025 and it will be intriguing to see if they resurface.
The performance of the Storm last week has skewed their attacking averages; they have scored 34ppg compared with the Sharks 24ppg and the defensive totals are far closer. The Sharks have conceded just 18ppg, slightly better than the Storms 19ppg. Recent history suggests a blowout win – the average margin of victory in the past 5 matches is 23.2 points with only 1 being by less than 16 points – but these two sides look set to deliver a tight contest.

Leg 1: Total Points Under 46.5 points – the average total in their past 5 matches is 46 points. The defensive record of each team in 2025 suggests that it will fall below this margin also.
Leg 2: Papenhuyzen to score – with Origin on the horizon, Papenhuyzen is playing his best football. He grabbed 3 tries last week and will again be a threat from anywhere on the field.
Leg 3: Iro to score – despite having a few weeks off, he has scored 7 tries for the season. In career best form, expect him to cause the Storm some issues on the left edge.
