The Dolphins remain firmly in the finals race and still have an opportunity to push toward the top four, while the Broncos’ premiership defence is over after a disastrous 2026 campaign.
Brisbane’s 30-6 loss to Newcastle was the latest performance to confirm their season is done. The Broncos sit near the bottom of the ladder and now face a Dolphins side that should be desperate to make a statement against “big brother” at Suncorp Stadium.
The market has the favourites around -7.5, and I believe that remains short. The Dolphins have the superior backline, the healthier attacking spine, and considerably more motivation. Isaiya Katoa is ready to return in the halves after getting through last week, while Brisbane are without Adam Reynolds due to concussion and have named Thomas Duffy at halfback.
The Broncos have dominated the rivalry historically and beat the Dolphins 26-12 earlier this season. However, those results are already reflected in the public perception of the teams. On current form and current team strength, the Dolphins should be significantly bigger favourites.

Dolphins Need to Make Top Four Statement
The Dolphins have endured a volatile second half of the season, ranging from a 66-0 humiliation against Cronulla to important response victories that kept their finals position intact. They now reach a stage where simply making the finals should no longer be considered enough. Their roster has the talent to challenge for a top 4 position, and beating Brisbane comfortably would reinforce that ambition.
Katoa’s return last week remains the most important team news. The young halfback provides organisation, kicking control and attacking shape that the Dolphins have lacked during his absence. Kodi Nikorima and Bradley Schneider have competed admirably, but neither gives the Dolphins the same balance.
With Katoa steering the team, the Dolphins can better use their extraordinary backline. Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow returns at fullback behind Jamayne Isaako, Jack Bostock, Herbie Farnworth, and Selwyn Cobbo. That group possesses enormous speed, power and yardage potential, and each player presents a direct threat to Brisbane’s defensive edges.
The forwards should also create an advantage. Thomas Flegler and Francis Molo start in the front row, with Max Plath, Tom Gilbert and Felise Kaufusi providing impact from the interchange. Jeremy Marshall-King gives the home side another point of attack around the ruck.

Walsh remains one of the most dangerous players in the game, but his season has reflected Brisbane’s broader problems: flashes of brilliance undermined by poor execution, ill-discipline, and an inability to remain composed when games turn against them.
The Broncos now lose Adam Reynolds to concussion. Thomas Duffy has been named at halfback, with Billy Walters starting at hooker and Ben Hunt available as a utility from the bench. Payne Haas and Xavier Willison give Brisbane quality through the middle, while Kotoni Staggs remains a dangerous attacking centre.
There is still enough individual talent to trouble the Dolphins. Walsh, Staggs, Deine Mariner and Haas can produce moments that make the spread uncomfortable. The issue is whether Brisbane have enough collective belief to sustain pressure for 80 minutes now that the season is effectively over.
The Broncos have won only six games and are threatening to produce one of the poorest title defences in the modern era. Their name and recent premiership still carry weight in the betting market, but their 2026 performances no longer justify it.

This is the moment for little brother to make a statement. The Broncos’ season is finished, their veteran halfback is unavailable, and their confidence appears completely broken. The Dolphins are still chasing a top 4 finish and there will be shortage of motivation to get just their second win over the Broncos.
My fair spread is comfortably above the current Dolphins -7.5, making the home side one of the stronger positions of the round.
The home team’s edge advantage is substantial. Bostock, Farnworth and Cobbo will repeatedly challenge a Brisbane backline that has struggled with defensive spacing, while Hammer can create damage whenever the Broncos’ markers or middle defenders lose concentration.
Katoa’s return should continue to help the Dolphins build pressure rather than simply chase attacking opportunities. His kicking game can force Walsh to begin sets from deep and reduce Brisbane’s ability to attack through broken play.
The Dolphins must still respect Haas and Willison. If Brisbane dominate the middle, Duffy and Walsh may receive enough time to keep the contest close. That is the clearest path to the Broncos covering.
However, the Dolphins’ bench should allow them to maintain tempo. Plath, Gilbert and Kaufusi can lift the defensive energy when Flegler and Molo leave the field, while Marshall-King can continue testing Brisbane around the ruck.
The historical record is ugly for the Dolphins, but betting this game based on past meetings would ignore everything that has happened in 2026. Brisbane are being rated too highly because of who they were, not who they are.
The Dolphins should be more motivated, better organised, and considerably more dangerous with the ball. If they begin well, Brisbane’s resistance may disappear quickly.
At Suncorp Stadium, against the club that has overshadowed them since their arrival, the Dolphins should want more than two competition points. They should want a statement win.
