Brisbane vs Sydney Prediction & Betting Tips: AFL 2026 Round 16

Lions Starting to Roar

Brisbane returns to the Gabba for a genuine blockbuster, searching for a massive scalp to prove their premiership credentials. Both sides are fresh off the Round 15 bye, but it is Chris Fagan’s side that is finally starting to trend in the right direction. After a shockingly poor stretch where they suffered heavy defeats to Fremantle, GWS, and Geelong, the Lions have steadied the ship to secure back-to-back wins over Gold Coast and Richmond. Currently sitting 8th on the ladder with an 8-6 record, they are managing some injury woes, missing key playmakers like Hugh McCluggage and Dayne Zorko. However, winning a prime-time home game at the Gabba against a top two side is the exact opportunity they need to reassert themselves as genuine contenders.

Swans Doing it Tough

Sydney makes the 732-kilometre trip north sitting comfortably in second place on the ladder with a phenomenal 12-2 record. They have won four of their last five matches, highlighted by a staggering 170-56 demolition of Richmond. However, the Swans have been doing it the hard way in their other recent victories, securing tight, nail-biting wins against Collingwood and Port Adelaide. They will be incredibly dangerous this week with Errol Gulden finally making his long-awaited return to the side to link up with serious Brownlow contender Isaac Heeney. But relying heavily on late surges and narrow margins is a dangerous game when travelling to a Gabba to take on the back-to-back champs.

The Tactical Battle

Brisbane's defensive system is based on skinny side pressing toward the ball carrier or receiver. This pressing structure will be severely tested by the Swans, who have dominated this season with a forward handball game. In the middle of the ground, we are going to see some massive individual match-ups; Josh Dunkley going head-to-head with Isaac Heeney looms large, as does James Jordon taking on Lachie Neale. On top of that, the Lions will likely need a half forward to put some attention on Nick Blakey to stop him from launching attacking chains.

What to Expect? Here’s Our Best Bet!

Brisbane is starting to trend in the right direction after a poor first half of the season by their standards. On the flip side, the Swans have had an excellent year, sitting very pretty 2nd on the ladder and well clear of 3rd, but they have been doing it the hard way lately, making big comebacks to narrowly win. Furthermore, when you dig a bit deeper at their away form, it isn't as great. They have won 4 of their 6 games as the visiting team this season, but 3 of those wins came against bottom half sides, and the other was against a depleted Bulldogs team in Round 7. Their 2 losses were against top 6 sides in the Cats and the Hawks. The Lions look primed to exploit these vulnerabilities and record a statement win.

Brisbane vs Sydney Prop Bet

Sam Draper has been a constant threat in front of the big sticks for the Lions this season. With the Lions consistently going with the two-ruck approach (Draper & Fort), Draper has been spending decent chunks of time deep forward, and he’s kicked at least one goal in seven of his last 10 games. Also, he loves a goal in front of the home crowd, with at least one goal in 10 of his last 11 home matches.
