After a fiery start to the NBL round with seven players ejected from the opening match between Brisbane and Adelaide, NBL Round 19 continues on Friday night with a double header, with the second of those matches pitting the Cairns Taipans up against the Tasmania JackJumpers.
These are two teams with losing form who are desperate for a win at this stage of the season. Cairns are fighting for pride while Tasmania are clinging onto their Play-in spot in 6th place.

Taipans Tension
The Taipans have had a season to forget with just seven wins and they are lucky to be propped up off the bottom of the ladder by the woeful Bullets. Injuries have certainly played a part, but a huge reliance on Jack McVeigh has clearly worn thin as he couldn't hide his frustrations at his teammates on the back of two hefty losses in Round 18.
Outside of McVeigh brilliance, the Taipans just don’t seem to have any weapons that can hurt the opposition. They are the worst in the league both offensively and defensively, which is a tough mountain to build a game plan upon. They do put up the 2nd most 3-point shots in the league, but the Jackies will be sure to make sure they pressure the perimeter here.
Wounded Jackies
The Jackies are also hurting at the wrong time of the season. At times they’ve looked like a genuine contender with good wins over Melbourne, Adelaide and South East Melbourne in recent times. However inconsistency has plagued them all season, and now injuries have them on their knees. Will Magnay and Bryce Hamilton are, without doubt, their two most important players, and now both are out for the season, leaving holes that not even a JackJumper can fill.
Majok Deng returns from a concussion scare and will play an important role, while a lot will be expected of Josh Bannan in terms of scoring as well as rebounding where he’s in the top 3 in the league this season.
A buffer over the Hawks, and a soft draw to finish the season, should see the Jackies hold onto that elusive Play-in spot in 6th place, but they’ll want to make sure they win the games they are supposed to.
Recent History
While the Taipans have a poor win-loss record this season, one of their wins did come against the JackJumpers back in November.
However the JackJumpers do have a good record against the Taipans winning 8 of their last 10 meetings.
The JackJumpers have struggled to “defend the island” this season, but on the road, they’ve been much better with an 8-7 away record in NBL26.

The JackJumpers have dropped games recently against the Hawks and Kings where they weren’t able to control the pace of play. They’ll want to keep their defence tight and bring a methodical style that will stifle Jack McVeigh’s output and the Taipans scoring. If they do that, they should do enough to get an important away win in a low-scoring contest.
