GWS Giants vs Hawthorn: 2025 AFL Elimination Final

Giants Seek Fourth-Straight Win

GWS won their final three matches of the home and away season to secure fifth place on the ladder and a home final. During that stretch, they pummelled a struggling North Melbourne by 54 points, first-time finalist Gold Coast Suns by 35 points and St Kilda by 11 points in the final round.

Major inclusions for the Giants this week are Josh Kelly, and forwards Jesse Hogan and Jake Stringer. The latter duo provides firepower up forward as always with the pair kicking 43 and 25 goals respectively this season, despite both missing numerous games throughout the year. The Giants are typically one of the most efficient kicking sides in the competition, so look for them to hit targets when attacking; the Giants like to handball more than the league average, as they string handballs together in traffic to set up runners like Lachie Whitfield and Lachie Ash off half back.

Hawks Back on September Stage

Hawthorn playing finals footy has largely become the norm in the 21st century and coach Sam Mitchell has done a tremendous job with his team, as they endured a rebuild under their former four-time premiership and Brownlow Medal-winning champion. Despite a 10-point loss to the Brisbane Lions in Round 24, the Hawks secured a finals berth in eighth place. It is one month since Hawthorn obliterated Collingwood by 64 points, and the Pies have since beaten Adelaide in a Qualifying Final.

Josh Weddle and Sam Butler return to the side with Mitch Lewis a surprise omission alongside veteran Luke Breust who is sadly on the outer as he is set to retire at the season’s end. Breust’s great mate, Jack Gunston, is playing outstanding football at the age of 33, kicking 62 goals. Key forward Mabior Chol, and small forwards Nick Watson and Jack Ginnivan provide excellent options up forward for the Hawks and they will try and put the Giants defenders under pressure.

Recent Stats

Recent honours have been shared between the two sides. Hawthorn proved superior in Round 3 by 12 points. Despite 34 disposals from Whitfield, it was a team effort from the Hawks that saw them prevail in Tasmania.

One concern for the Hawks is the fact that the Giants have won the past four as the home side. Whitfield, ruckman Kieren Briggs and midfielder Tom Green have played well against the Hawks in recent encounters, while Hogan has slotted 14 goals from his past four matches against them.

Giants or Hawks? Here’s our GWS vs Hawthorn Tip

Almost a coin flip match up on paper as both sides have played excellent footy at times in the last month. The Hawks dismantling of the Magpies still rings fresh in my mind because they showed a glimpse at what the future could be for this club that simply knows how to win premierships. There appears to be a hoodoo at Engie Stadium for Hawthorn, losing all eight by an average of five goals.

The Giants were in prime position last year to win the premiership and blew a pair of big leads against the Swans and Lions. With that in mind, the Hawks will know that being within striking distance could be enough to turn the screws on the Giants. I have a slight leaning towards the Hawks to send the Giants packing.
