Canterbury Park Racing Tips: Wednesday, September 17th 2025
Race 3: Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale Handicap (1550m) – 2:45pm (AEST)
(2) Perfect Play resumes for trainers Annabel and Rob Archibald. The six-year-old gelding last raced in May, finishing sixth behind Cormac T when beaten just a length. It was a good run and Cormac T raced last Saturday when finishing second behind Juja Kibo. Perfect Play has placed twice from four when fresh, so there is a small concern about his winning chances here, but the odds available look terrific and the small field should suit.
(1) Captain Maverick is one of two Chris Waller runners in the race and gets the services of James McDonald. Four consecutive seconds for the five-year-old gelding must be a little frustrating for connections, however this is an event well within his grasp. Last week’s run should have him ticking over perfectly for this event.
(7) Just A Journey is the race favourite following a second placing at Warwick Farm a fortnight ago. A three-year-old filly that was fifth in Listed company two starts ago, she has plenty of upside and should race strongly second up from a spell. Deserves favouritism, just not keen at the current price of $2.10.
(2) Perfect Play WIN
$7.50 (1 Unit)
Race 4: Captivant @ Kia Ora Handicap (1900m) – 3:20pm (AEST)
(4) Sunset Park draws an outside gate, but jockey Alysha Collett will push forward looking to take up the running. Prepared by Brad Widdup, the five-year-old mare has had three runs this campaign for a win two starts ago and then finishing runner up at her previous attempt. Despite her age, the daughter of Sea The Stars has only raced on seven occasions, producing three wins and two placings. Hopefully she can pinch the race out in front.
(5) Inncourt is the logical danger in the race and is also sparingly raced as a five-year-old gelding. He will be having his fifth career run, following a third to Sirius Legend at Kembla Grange over 1600m. This will be the gelding’s first time stepping out beyond the mile and it will be interesting to see how the former Irish galloper performs over the 1900m.
(7) Sting In The Tail is deep into her preparation with five runs yielding a single minor placing. Dropping back to the 1900m looks a positive and she is going to be finishing strongly at the end of the race.
(4) Sunset Park WIN
$3.90 (2 Units)
Race 5: Asahi Super Dry Handicap (1100m) – 3:55pm (AEST)
(6) Shalaa Gold has been costly for punters with four-straight defeats at $4.60 or less, including a third-placed run at Warwick Farm over 1000m. The Bjorn Baker-trained gelding has drawn well in two with Rachel King picking up the ride. Prepared to give him one more chance to atone and land his second career victory at start number 11.
(5) Hidden Motive draws directly to the outside of Shalaa Gold and the pair should be racing within reaching distance of one another. A three-year-old colt for Nathan Doyle, Hidden Motive is ready for a big first-up run and a pair of trials has him ready to win. Looks a nice race for the colt to chase a hat-trick of wins.
(4) Braveheart has been freshened up with his last run coming on July 30, when second behind Prima Bella over 1000m. Would not be surprised to see Peter Snowden’s gelding run a big race at double figures.
(6) Shalaa Gold WIN
$4.60 (1.5 Units)
