Australia: Winning but Far From Their Best
The Aussies captured a thrilling come-from-behind 24-22 victory over the Kiwis in the opening match of the tournament, scoring two tries in the final 12 minutes of the match.
Coming up against a strong pack of forwards who were well complemented by the outside backs, the Kangaroos appeared underdone. This was no surprise considering nine of their team hadn't featured in the Finals.
They had an inferior share of possession (48%) and completion rate (76%), which limited their effectiveness. Their halves looked void of ideas also, failing to capitalise on their 9.7 metres per carry by creating just one line break.
The loss of Moses hurt their cause, but Dearden offered stability despite lacking the same long kicking game. The fact that they achieved this result while playing poorly by their standards suggests that they should only improve as the tournament progresses.
Fiji: Off to a Flying Start
It was a pleasing performance from Fiji in their commanding 40-12 victory over the Cook Islands last Sunday. Expected to win as favourites, the way they executed over 80 minutes provides the greatest confidence.
With 57% possession, they completed at just 71%, impacted by attacking opportunities which broke down before the final pass. With nine metres per carry, they made eight line breaks and 660 post-contact metres, continually pressuring their opponents' defensive line with second-phase play.
They were also strong defensively, limiting their opponents to just 8.1 metres per carry and only three line breaks.
The challenge now is improving on this. The 14 errors made in this contest will not go unpunished by the Australians, and they must find a way to slow down their opponents in the middle of the field.
Australia vs Fiji: Stats That Matter
- These two sides have met eight times in the history of the game, with Australia winning every game. In a worrying sign for Fiji, the average margin of victory is 53 points.
- The minimum number of points Australia have scored in games against Fiji is 42. The most Fiji have scored is eight and, ironically, 42-8 was the score in 2022 when the Fijians recorded their closest match against Australia.
- The Australians have a 91% winning record at this ground, while Fiji have lost their only game played here.
Australia vs Fiji Betting Prediction
Australia to Dominate
As promising as the rise of Pacific nations has been, Fiji are a team which has failed to develop at the same rate as Samoa and Tonga. They do not possess the same squad depth which allows them to set a strong intensity and maintain it for 80 minutes.
With the Australians anticipating a drop in intensity from the opening week, they have changed their team. There is a strong case that the inclusions of Walker, Tedesco, Best and Murray strengthen the team and bring players who are in form into the side.
That spells trouble for Fiji, who are relatively unchanged from their opening match. They should have put more points on their opponents last week and, as stated earlier, their mistakes will be punished by their opponents this week.
The challenge in this game is finding value. Such is the expected outcome of this match, most bookies are not even offering a price on the home team.
With stronger attacking players coming into the team, who also have a point to prove to gain a spot in future matches, we might just see the best of what this squad has to offer. With that in mind, the line is in danger, with a comfortable victory covering the line expected.

Leg 1: James Tedesco Anytime Try Scorer
Tedesco was the Clive Churchill Medal winner and lifted his team upon his shoulders throughout the season. This game should be no different, and Tedesco has a unique ability to pop up anywhere on the field. He also has a superb support-play game that gives him a great chance of scoring.
Leg 2: Bradman Best Anytime Try Scorer
Powerful with the ball, Best doesn't die wondering. He will look to capitalise on any chance given, and if they time it right, Dearden should find a key attacking weapon open close to the line.
Leg 3: David Fifita Anytime Try Scorer
Debuting for Australia in this game, Fifita scored six tries throughout the season for the Rabbitohs and needs no great invitation close to the line. As useful as a lead runner as he is out the back, he will have a range of opportunities to leave his mark on this match.
