Okay, let’s start by saying no one in Australia thought that the JackJumpers, in their inaugural season, with the roster they assembled, would make the finals, let alone the Grand Final series! Absolute fairy tale stuff this is, but let’s put that aside and get into our preview and prediction for this best-of-five series.
Sydney Kings
The Sydney Kings looked anything but contenders for the Championship at the start of the season. They were 3-6 halfway through Round 8 but remained patient knowing they had a star in the ranks in Jaylen Adams. Adams not only went onto being a star for his team, but dominated constantly enough to eventually claim MVP honours.
After the Kings started at 3-6, they then went on a run where they won 13 of their next 14 games with Adams at the forefront of that. He certainly had his help however, with Xavier Cooks putting up career-high numbers and raising the eyebrows of some NBA scouts, as well as Jarrell Martin chipping in with some very tidy numbers.
Tasmania JackJumpers
The Tasmania JackJumpers were everyone’s favourite to finish in the bottom three in the pre-season, if not the bottom depending on who you were asking. They started off the season proving the haters right with losses in six of their first eight games, but boy did they turn things around.
The JackJumpers, in their inaugural season, finished the regular season by winning 12 of their last 15 games, which was just enough for them to secure a berth in the finals. Josh Adams was the star of the show in a lot of their wins, but he sure had some help via his fellow import in Josh Magette, as well as favourite son Jack McVeigh.
Prediction
The JackJumpers were fortunate that Chris Goulding was a late out in the deciding game in their semi-finals series, but they won’t get the same luck in the Grand Finals. Jaylen Adams is a totally different beast to what they’ve come up against so far and with his family coming to watch him, I expect him to put on a show that is definitely worth the price of admission. Kings to win this series in a gentlemen’s sweep is on the cards in my opinion.
