2020 AFL Women's (AFLW) Round 1 Betting Tips

February 6th 2020, 11:13am, By: admin

The 2020 AFLW season is finally upon us! There are four new teams in the competition, a new finals format with two extra spots up for grabs in the finals. We have previews and betting tips for all seven games below!

AFLW Round 1 Betting Tips

Carlton vs Richmond (Friday 7 February, 7:45pm)

The AFLW season kicks off at Ikon Park as the Blues host competition newcomers Richmond in a highly anticipated cross-conference clash. The Tigers made it clear that they would be looking to challenge for a flag immediately by putting together a very talented list headlined by star midfielder Monique Conti, former Western Bulldogs premiership captain Katie Brennan and key forward Sabrina Frederick. 2019 runners up Carlton are a genuine premiership contender after keeping together the majority of the core that got to the grand final last year, with Darcy Vescio and Tayla Harris headlining a dynamic forward line. The Blues have got great continuity in their side and have played in front of big crowds in season openers before. Carlton have one of the best home ground advantages, going 3-1 at Ikon Park last season. The preseason hype has Richmond as the favourites, however Carlton’s continuity should hold them in good stead to continue their excellent form they showed in the second half on last season.

GWS Giants vs Gold Coast Suns (Saturday 8 February, 1:10pm)

The Suns first game in the AFLW comes in an away clash against the one of the most talented sides in the competition in GWS. The Giants have boasted some of the most talented lists across the first three seasons of the AFLW, but have failed to put it all together on the field. The Giants have one of the deepest midfields in the competition led by Alyce Parker and Jessica Del Pos. Coach Alan McConnell has talked about the Giants likely implementing a more zone based defence which should tighten up the Giants defensive inefficiencies. The Suns have constructed its inaugural list based around youth, looking at playing the long term game. Don’t expect many wins in 2020 from this very young Suns list, the Giants won’t have any issues with the line in this match.

Melbourne vs North Melbourne (Saturday 8 February, 3:10pm)

Premiership favourites North Melbourne travel to Casey Fields to take on the Demons in Daisy Pearce’s first game back after missing the entirety of the 2019 campaign. If the Demons were at full strength this would be a thrilling contests between two of the best sides in the competition. However with ruck Lauren Pearce, star midfielder Lily Mithen, Katherine Smith and Shae Sloan are all confirmed outs, as Tegan Cunningham, Kate Hore and Ainslie Kemp are all unlikely to be fit for the round one clash. The Demons have been cruelled by injuries as they begin their campaign against the Kangaroos who are at full strength. The Roos built their brand around fast offensive ball movement and were by a large margin, the most efficient team inside forward 50 last season. With Emma Kearney and Jemma Bruton controlling the midfield, and with Emma King expected to see spend a lot more time up forward as the main tall, the Roos will have no problem scoring against Melbourne’s leaky defence.

Brisbane vs Adelaide (Saturday 8 February, 5:10pm)

Adelaide travels to Hickey Park to begin it’s premiership defence against the Brisbane Lions. The Crows will have a tough time trying to defend their title with a serious injury list that could derail the Crows in the early part of the season with just 24 fit players on the list. Two time league best and fairest winner Erin Phillips is still recovering from the ACL injury she suffered in last years grand final, and number one ruck option Rhiannon Metcalfe is also out with an ACL injury. Without Phillips, there will be plenty of responsibility on Anne Hatchard who was an inside beast for the Crows last season, averaging 19 disposals, 12 contested possessions and five clearances a game. Brisbane have lost plenty of experience after the Gold Coast raided much of their playing list for its inaugural squad. The loss of Sabrina Frederick will be a big hole for a side that only averaged 27 points a game last season, the Crows averaged 59 points per game. The Lions will have a midfield to challenge the Crows, but they just don’t have the attacking power to beat the reigning premiers.

Adelaide -10.5

Collingwood vs West Coast (Sunday 9 February, 1:10pm)

Collingwood host West Coast at Victoria Park for the Eagles first game in the competition. After a disappointing 2019 where Collingwood finished with the worst record in the league, with just one win, they look to be the big improvers in 2020. The recruitment of Brianna Davey and a fit Chloe Molloy should have the Pies challenging for a finals position. Collingwood has a dynamic midfield and a strong defence, but there are plenty of questions about their forward line. New coach Steve Symonds has said that Collingwood will be playing a more upbeat which should help a side that needs to improve offensively in order to challenge for the finals. The Eagles bring a stacked midfield filled with plenty of versatility with the likes of Dana Hooker, Emma Swanson, Mikayla Bowen, Brianna Green and Niamh Kelly. Whilst the Eagles appear to have a midfield that can match it with anyone, the forward and backlines aren’t anywhere near as strong. Collingwood’s greater depth across the ground will be crucial in this match, as well as greater continuity over the expansion side. West Coast come in as big outsiders, but this game will be competitive, however the Pies will be too good.

St Kilda vs Western Bulldogs (Sunday 9 February, 3:10pm)

Football returns to Moorabin as the Saints play their first ever game in the AFLW against the Bulldogs. The Saints enter this season with plenty of hype with a list that is filled with potential stars with the likes of Georgia Patrikios, Nat Exon, Nicola Xenos, Tarni White and Ali Drennan. The Saints don’t have the midfield depth to challenge this season, but do have a great foundation for the future. The Dogs premiership defence was a shambles in 2019, losing their last five games of the season to finish at the bottom of conference A with a 2-5 record. To make matters worse, Katie Brennan and Monique Conti joined Richmond, while Libby Birch joined Melbourne and Tiarna Ernst singed with the Gold Coast. Libby Burch’s departure will cause plenty of headaches for the Bulldogs on the defensive side of the ball, however the Dog’s bigger bodies on the inside is going to be a massive advantage in this clash against the Saints. Expect a big season from star forward Brook Lochland, who will be receive plenty of the footy in attacking 50 for the Dogs. Ellie Blackburn and number one draft pick Gabby Newton will be crucial in a Dogs midfield that will have plenty pressure on it given the defensive deficiencies the Dogs have. The Saints will be a competitive side in 2020, however the lack of depth in the experienced Saints outfit will struggle to run out four quarters. The Dogs will prevail in a competitive match.

Fremantle vs Geelong (Sunday 9 February, 5:10pm)

Round one concludes with the Cats travelling across the Nullarbor to face the Dockers in Perth. Both sides made the finals last year finishing with a 6-1 record, whereas the Cats benefited from playing in a weaker conference making finals with just a 3-4 record. Home ground advantage has proven to be important in AFLW across the first three season of the competition. With four of their first five games in Perth, Fremantle are well positioned to get off to a good start this season, which will be crucial in what is a difficult conference B. The Cats struggled to kick big scores last season and the offensive deficiency looks like it will be an issue again. To add to the Cats woes All Australian defender Meg McDonald will miss the first four weeks of the season after surgery on a broken finger. Kiara Bowers, Stephanie Cain, Hayley Miller Jasmin Stewart create an impressive and versatile Dockers midfield that will give the Cats plenty of grief. The Dockers do have issues with their ruck stocks after Aine Tighe injured her knee, leaving Mim Strom as the only ruck on the list. However the Dockers ruck stocks won’t have to much of an impact of the match. Fremantle were the 2nd highest scoring side in the competition last season with an average of 47 points per game, the Cats only averaged 20 points per game last season. Fremantle’s offensive power will be too much for Geelong.

Fremantle -6.5
