Wednesday racing takes centre stage across Australia, with midweek meetings being run in all six states. We’ve narrowed the card down to four bets across Caulfield-Heath, Canterbury and Belmont, including two short-priced runners we’re keen to back, some value at Belmont and a $23 roughie at Canterbury that looks capable of running a much bigger race than the market suggests.

(8) Killenaule has been knocking on the door with three-straight minor placings. At his latest two, he has chased home Emperor Tzu who doesn’t line up here. He gets a 2kg claim from Jabez Johnstone which should help his cause in this event. Once again, he draws wide, so that shouldn’t impact him too much. He should be letting down strongly in the straight and looks hardest to beat.
(5) Talkin’ Stern has won his past two starts, the latest coming over the mile at Seymour. From gate two, John Allen should be positive as the gelding seeks a hat-trick of wins. It will be his first attempt at 1800m.
(11) Shanoni has the lightest weight of 55kg in the race and she should appreciate the step up in trip. She has been disappointing so far this prep but could show some improvement this time around.

(6) Saffron Veil looks extremely hard to beat at her third career start for trainer Chris Waller. James McDonald has been booked which is an immediate positive and the three-year-old filly draws gate two which looks good. She was runner-up last start and was held up at a crucial stage, which arguably cost her the race. She looks the best bet on the card.
(9) Affari is another Chris Waller-trained horse, with Waller having more than half the field engaged in the race. She has been runner-up at her past two starts, the latest when leading. She may be better suited not being the leader and could run a big race at each-way odds.
(4) Dr Know finished third on debut at Kembla Grange. The winner of that race, Sky Deck, has won a Benchmark 64 Handicap since, while the runner-up Cap D’ail broke his maiden at the next start. With winning form lines out of the race and race-day experience under his belt, the gelding should run well.

(9) Think I Do has been racing well with a narrow second at Goulburn followed by a third placed effort at Canberra. This is harder but the mare is likely to carry 52kg with apprentice hoop Claire Ramsbotham riding. Hopefully she can settle better than midfield because she could surprise here at $23. She has been placed once over course and distance earlier this year, so let’s hope for a repeat effort.
(3) Standard Deviation has raced twice this prep and put the writing on the wall last start that he is ready to win. It is the Chris Waller and James McDonald combination from gate four and he should get a lovely run. Will look the winner at some point.
(1) Doradus has been placed in all three runs this campaign, including a victory two runs ago over 1550m at the track. Nash Rawiller should take him to the front from the wide draw and he will give them something to catch.

(6) Grandad’s Adiction is on the quick back-up after finishing fourth over 1700m. Clint Johnston-Porter jumps back in the saddle and he rode the gelding to victory two runs back. The small field should suit as he can settle handy in the run. I expect him to run well at nice odds.
(5) Cheeto was runner-up last start for trainers Daniel and Ben Pearce, with the change of scenery clearly doing the trick. He was smashed in betting but unfortunately ran into Streak Of God, who has since franked the form by winning again on a Saturday. Johnston-Porter rode Cheeto in that event, and now Willie Pike takes over.
(1) Polyvanova has run second in two of her three runs this campaign. In both seconds, apprentice Giaan O’Donnell has ridden and the 3kg claim will help the mare’s chances here. She should work forward from the wide gate.
